Why is the city of Oakland so poor, despite its prime location on San Francisco Bay? The main reason is that it is run by moonbats:
The Oakland city council voted unanimously to bar shipments of coal through a proposed marine terminal on Monday, setting the stage for a legal battle.
The prospect of train cars carrying millions of tons of coal mined in Utah through Oakland before heading to Asian markets has inflamed passions in the city.
Opponents argue it will harm health and exacerbate climate change. Proponents say it will provide good jobs in an impoverished area.
The idiocy of these posturing kooks is staggering. Even if burning coal did make the climate change, do they really think the weather in Oakland will be any better if the coal is shipped from somewhere else?
Currently the location is an abandoned military base. People could be put to work transforming it into a useful shipping facility. But the progs in charge would prefer it continue to serve as a wildlife refuge for rats and seagulls.
Oakland is so nuts, the mayor used to be Jerry Brown. Now Brown is back in the governor’s mansion. The tragic waste of this economic opportunity is emblematic of what leftists are doing to the former Golden State as a whole.

The Left’s campaign to exploit the Orlando terror attack as a pretext to infringe on our right to bear arms is all the more bizarre in light of stories like this:
The assailant, a 40-year old Palestinian male, stabbed and wounded two Israelis before being shot and killed by an armed civilian present at the scene, with security forces arriving in the minutes following the attack.
When seconds count, the police are minutes away.
Magen David Adom reported that two Israelis: a 40-year old man, apparently Haredi, and a 30-year old woman, had been stabbed in their chest and back, respectively.
Both were taken to Laniado Hospital, and were fully conscious according to medics. Their conditions have been described as stable; the male victim was last updated as being in a moderate condition, while the woman was less severely wounded.
The attack took place in the vicinity of the central market in Netanya, Israel. It likely would have turned out much worse if progressives had succeeded in disarming the guy who shot the terrorist.

Law enforcement was summoned to confront a pint-sized thought criminal at an end-of-the-year class party at the William P. Tatem Elementary School in Collingswood, New Jersey:
A third grader had made a comment about the brownies being served to the class. After another student exclaimed that the remark was “racist,” the school called the Collingswood Police Department, according to the mother of the boy who made the comment.
The police officer spoke to the student, who is 9, said the boy’s mother, Stacy dos Santos, and local authorities. …
“He said they were talking about brownies. . . . Who exactly did he offend?” dos Santos said.
Maybe he offended the brownies. Who knew that brownies are now a protected class?
Police said the incident had been referred to the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency.
If the boy is found to be a racist, he may need to be removed to foster care, so that new attitudes can be installed.
Complained Mrs. dos Santos,
“He was intimidated, obviously. There was a police officer with a gun in the holster talking to my son, saying, ‘Tell me what you said.’ He didn’t have anybody on his side.”
This surreal incident is hardly an isolated event:
Superintendent Scott Oswald estimated that on some occasions over the last month, officers may have been called to as many as five incidents per day in the district of 1,875 students. …
The increased police involvement follows a May 25 meeting among the Collingswood Police Department, school officials, and representatives from the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, where school officials and police both said they were told to report to police any incidents that could be considered criminal, including what Police Chief Kevin Carey called anything “as minor as a simple name-calling incident that the school would typically handle internally.”
The police and schools were also advised that they should report “just about every incident” to the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency, Carey said.
Kids may not be learning much else these days, but they are certain to come out of school with a healthy fear of authorities and the full knowledge that their every word will be evaluated for political correctness.

Maybe this will generate serious media interest in the program through which the Obama Administration helped drug cartels smuggle weapons into Mexico in an attempt to generate pretexts for infringing on our Second Amendment liberties:
One of the guns used in the November 13, 2015 Paris terrorist attacks came from Phoenix, Arizona where the Obama administration allowed criminals to buy thousands of weapons illegally in a deadly and futile “gun-walking” operation known as “Fast and Furious.”
A Report of Investigation (ROI) filed by a case agent in the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF) tracked the gun used in the Paris attacks to a Phoenix gun owner who sold it illegally, “off book,” Judicial Watch’s law enforcement sources confirm.
The Phoenix gun owner committed violations by making an illegal sale and owning an unregistered full auto. But the normally hyperaggressive feds chose not to prosecute and to keep his identity quiet.
“Agents were told, in the process of taking the fully auto, not to anger the seller to prevent him from going public,” a veteran law enforcement official told Judicial Watch.
It’s not clear if the agency, which is responsible for cracking down on the illegal use and trafficking of firearms, did this because the individual was involved in the Fast and Furious gun-running scheme.
It will remain unclear until journalists expend some serious shoe leather, because ATF bureauweenies aren’t talking.
This isn’t the first time Fast and Furious has come up in the context of Islamic terror attacks.
A mainstream newspaper reported that a Muslim terrorist who planned to murder attendees of a Muhammad cartoon contest in Garland, Texas last year bought a 9-millimeter pistol at a Phoenix gun shop that participated in the ATF’s Fast and Furious program despite drug and assault charges that should have raised red flags.
Come on, mainstream newspapers, dig a little deeper. What can it hurt with Eric Holder already gone and Obama soon to follow?

Elementary students will be taught transgender theory – the notion that gender is a “social construct” rather than a biological reality – beginning in kindergarten, under new educational standards quietly adopted by Washington state.
By fifth grade, teachers will “promote” solutions to combat attitudes the state sees as lacking “respect” for homosexuals and transgender people.
The indoctrination program launches with the beginning of the 2017 school year.
In kindergarten, according to the new guidelines, students as young as five should “understand there are many ways to express gender.”
No press release was issued to alert parents.
The guidelines define “gender” as “a social construct based on emotional, behavioral, and cultural characteristics attached to a person’s assigned biological sex.” Confusingly, elsewhere they define the term as synonymous with “biological sex.”
“Sexual orientation” is defined as “the nature of an individual’s physical, romantic, emotional, or spiritual attraction to another person.”
None of this is likely to make sense to a kindergartener. But brainwashing tends to be more effective the earlier you get started.
In a desperate effort to squeeze depleted moral credibility out of the civil rights movement, progressives have attempted to extend it to imposing the depraved LGBT agenda and even to denying us our constitutional right to bear arms:
Speaking in Chicago Monday, Hillary Clinton called gun control a “civil-rights issue” …
Let me interrupt to point out that gun violence in Chicago is stratospheric, due to the futility of draconian gun laws Shrillary et al. would like to impose on the rest of the nation.
Clinton, the likely Democratic presidential nominee, in delivering the keynote speech at a Rainbow PUSH convention luncheon, said, “I am convinced the tide is turning” on “common-sense” gun control.
“I can feel it,” Clinton said.
She praised U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (D-Matteson), who was in attendance, for joining a recent sit-in on the floor of the U.S. House to call for gun control.
The congressional sit-in farce allowed Democrats to indulge in nostalgia for the 1960s, a time when the left could be said to advance legitimate civil rights issues. The sit-in did not succeed in its ostensible objective of denying due process to those who would like to exercise their constitutional right to bear arms despite being arbitrarily placed on arcane government lists. But the actual goal of stimulating donations must have been achieved, because now Democrats want to take their sit-ins nationwide:
Party leaders are urging members to conduct similar sit-ins around the country as they try to sustain the flash of hard-core activism on the gun issue.
This “flash” was a result of despicably exploiting the Orlando terror attack by blaming the tools used rather than the Islamic ideology that inspired it.
“We don’t have the numbers to get things done, so we have to turn to more dramatic displays to galvanize the public so they can help us pressure the Republicans to do what’s right,” said U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn.
By “dramatic,” our first Muslim congresscritter means, “childishly theatrical.”
Here’s how he came to take part in the use of the House floor for a kiddie-style sleepover:
Ellison was with the president of the National Iranian American Council when a scheduler gave him a note that said, “Your mom called and wants you on [the] floor!”
The Minneapolis Democrat’s mother is a social worker in Detroit…
Normally moms order kids to rein in their childishness, not to make a spectacle of it. But it can work differently when the child involved is 52 years old.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on Monday wrote a letter to colleagues urging them to hold sit-ins in their districts to build on the momentum of last week’s protest.

Anna Kaplan is running for Congress in New York. As an Iranian-born Jew, she has many reasons to be happy to have escaped the Islamic hellhole of her birth for the USA. Bizarrely, her #1 reason appears to be that she now has the “right” to kill her baby:
First they declare birth control — including abortion — to be a right. Then they conflate having a right to do something with having the right to force someone else to pay for it. That is the recipe for a degenerate tyranny in which you cannot pay taxes without becoming morally unclean.

If possible, the case of the 5-year-old girl sexually assaulted evidently by three Islamic “refugee” boys who had been seeded in Idaho has become even more alarming.
The girl was attacked in Twin Falls by boys aged 7, 10, and 14, from Iraqi and Sudanese families. Beyond that, we don’t know much. The authorities tend to throw shrouds of secrecy and/or deception over the misdeeds of the Muslims they have been importing. In this case, withholding some information is appropriate because the suspects are minors.
The lack of solid information has inevitably resulted in the spread of rumors, many of them false.
The authorities have reacted to these rumors like a maniac trying to kill mosquitoes with a flamethrower. From an official statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Idaho:
The spread of false information or inflammatory or threatening statements about the perpetrators or the crime itself reduces public safety and may violate federal law. We have seen time and again that the spread of falsehoods about refugees divides our communities.
Eugene Volokh makes an interesting point:
Imagine that there was an allegation of an unnamed white police officer sexually assaulting a young girl, and imagine that there were stories — even highly inaccurate ones — circulating online accusing the police department of covering up the assault, which led to threats to local government officials. And imagine that a U.S. attorney in the Bush administration made a public statement saying, among other things, that “We have seen time and again that the spread of falsehoods about police officers divides our communities,” and that “The spread of false information or inflammatory or threatening statements about the police officer or the crime itself reduces public safety and may violate federal law.”
There would be riots. The media would report on nothing else.
If spreading false information about refugees involved in raping American girls violates federal law, federal law needs to be changed. You stamp out falsehoods with truth, not jackboots. Otherwise it is the truth that ends up getting stamped out. Meanwhile, as people become ever more distrustful of the official line, wild rumors will continue to flourish.

Leading climate doomsayer Michael Mann recently downplayed the importance of climate change science, telling Democrats that data and models “increasingly are unnecessary” because the impact is obvious.
As proof that there is a crisis caused by insufficient levels of taxation and regulation, Mann noted flooding in Texas (where there have always been floods), drought in California (where there have always been droughts), and heat in Arizona (where it does tend to be hot). But he did not mention the hurricanes that are supposedly one of the most terrifying features of anthropogenic global warming. Here’s why:
A nine-year “hurricane drought” of Category 3 storms starting in 2006 beat the previous mark of eight years from 1861-1868, the longest such streak since such recording began in 1851, according to a May 2015 study by the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies.
Mann is less guffaw-worthy than usual when you consider that he made his inane comments to the Democratic Platform Drafting Committee.
The panel’s draft, which now goes to the full platform committee for approval at a meeting July 8-9 in Orlando, Florida, includes a recommendation to call for a Justice Department investigation into “alleged corporate fraud on the part of fossil fuel companies who have reportedly misled shareholders and the public on the scientific reality of climate change.”
The recommendation, adopted by unanimous consent, comes on the heels of a campaign by 17 attorneys general — 16 Democrats and one independent — to pursue Exxon Mobil Corp. and its supporters for climate change “fraud.”
That is, the Democrat Party is preparing to punish global warming deniers for their heresy. Now we have it straight from the mouth of a “climate scientist” that leftist global warming dogma does not require proof because it is self-evident. Let the Climate Change Inquisition begin.

Shrillary screeches that the final report of the House Republican Benghazi investigation “found nothing” so it is time to “move on.” On the contrary, the report found more than enough to sink her career, were we living in sane times. Mollie Hemingway describes the five big takeaways:
1. Administration Misled Public Immediately and Continually
2. Weak Benghazi Security Points to Clinton’s Political Considerations
3. Military Never Sent Men or Machines to Help
4. Terrorists Weren’t Brought to Justice
5. Administration Obstructed Investigation

Yet helping to depose Gadhafi, who had been cooperating against Islamic radicals, so as to make a failed state terrorist breeding ground out of Libya was supposedly her signature policy achievement as Secretary of State.
In rebuttal, Democrats issued their own minority report, which manages to mention Donald Trump 23 times, despite his having no relevance whatsoever to what happened in Benghazi.
Speaking of which, we still do not know what Ambassador Stevens was doing in Benghazi. Until we learn, suspicions will persist that it had to do with covertly supplying arms to the “Syrian resistance” — much of which is currently known as ISIS.

Gay activists must be suffering from a shortage of beatings to exploit. Otherwise they wouldn’t need to fake them. Looks like we have another example in Calum McSwiggan:
McSwiggan, a YouTuber from London with more than 62,000 subscribers, said he was stalked by a trio of bigots, who ganged up on him in a vicious attack as he left [a gay club in West Hollywood].
“With three broken teeth and six stitches in my forehead, I’ve never felt so terrified to be a gay man in the public eye,” McSwiggan wrote in his post [on Fakebook].
His friend and fellow YouTuber, Riyadh Khalaf, who claimed to be with him that night, said the attackers had been following their moves on social media and called them out by their names as they beat him, he recalled on Twitter.
But when police arrived, they were “unable to substantiate the assault.” McSwiggan had no visible injuries.
Police then arrested him after spotting the vlogger vandalizing a nearby car.
McSwiggan was held in a cell alone, and was only hospitalized after officers spotted him beating himself with the handle and receiver to a pay phone inside the cell, deputies said.
Homosexuality and self-harm. They go together like summer and cold beer.
His mugshot — which police said was taken prior to the injuries — showed a clean face, with no cuts on McSwiggan’s forehead.
This may not be the most competently staged hoax we’ve seen, but it does earn McSwiggan a slot on the Hate Hoax List.

A strikingly juvenile piece entitled “We Should Ban Old People From Voting” makes it clear that the people at GQ magazine are not happy about the Brexit vote. Like other moonbats, they blame the result on older voters. Those old enough to have developed a mature conception of liberty, and to remember when Britain was wealthier and more free, are resented as an obstacle on the path to globalist authoritarian utopia.
GQ backs up its demand with five arguments:
The EU referendum result will have less effect on older people
Everything will have less effect on older people, since they won’t be around as long. This is a particularly moronic argument when you consider that Brexit entails enduring short-term economic pain to reap the long-term benefits of freedom from the EU’s smothering tariffs and regulations.
There was no ‘golden age’ of Britain
Sure there was; it lasted for centuries. Maybe it can’t be brought back, but that is no reason to obliterate Britain by allowing it to become absorbed by Brussels.
Over 65s read the Daily Mail
In the USA, people under 40 seem to get most of their news from Comedy Central. I’ll take the Daily Mail.
We take pensioners’ driving licences away… why not their right to vote?
Maybe because people don’t stop having political interests when they stop driving. But at least this argument suggests that GQ might be open to letting older people vote so long as they still drive.
Prisoners don’t vote, either
Only a snide punk would draw a parallel between convicts and senior citizens. But GQ argues that denying the elderly voting rights is fine because we don’t have democracy anyway unless convicts and small children vote.
Why not give the vote exclusively to small children? They would vote for whomever promises them the most free stuff, just like Democrats. GQ ought to love the idea.

Nothing would epitomize America’s tragic self-imposed decline more poignantly than Donald Trump becoming the face of the Party of Reagan:
Some background on the ad:
A group encouraging GOP delegates at the upcoming convention to dump Donald Trump has a released a new ad that will air on national cable beginning Sunday.
The organization, called Delegates Unbound, speaks directly to Republican delegates, urging them as individuals to “Choose your values” and “Follow your conscience.” …
Delegates Unbound is separate from another “Never Trump” group called Free the Delegates. Both have the common goal of stopping Donald Trump from becoming the official Republican presidential nominee.
CNN reported on Friday that the new ad will run Sunday through Tuesday and that the group plans to spend between $2.5 and $3.5 million on its efforts to educate the public that delegates have never really been technically bound.
That’s a lot more money than Trump has been spending on ads — in part because the Donald has been siphoning campaign funds into other business ventures.
It is not too late to stop this catastrophe before the GOP suffers potentially irreversible damage.

Be forewarned; it may now be a thought crime to refer to breastfeeding as natural. David Cole quotes from an article entitled “Unintended Consequences of Invoking the ‘Natural’ in Breastfeeding Promotion” by Jessica Martucci and Anne Barnhill, published in the journal Pediatrics:
Promoting breastfeeding as “natural” may be ethically problematic, and, even more troublingly, it may bolster this belief that “natural” approaches are presumptively healthier. This may ultimately challenge public health’s aims in other contexts, particularly childhood vaccination…. Coupling nature with motherhood, however, can inadvertently support biologically deterministic arguments about the roles of men and women in the family (for example, that women should be the primary caretakers of children). Referencing the “natural” in breastfeeding promotion, then, may inadvertently endorse a controversial set of values about family life and gender roles, which would be ethically inappropriate…. Whatever the ethics of appealing to the natural in breastfeeding promotion, it raises practical concerns. The “natural” option does not align consistently with public health goals.
That is, when communicating with the public, doctors and health officials must not portray breastfeeding as natural, because it might cause them to think wrong thoughts about vaccination and gender roles.
Ironically, one of the authors wrote a book just last year entitled Back to the Breast: Natural Motherhood and Breastfeeding in America. But she says it’s okay for professional people to admit among each other that breastfeeding is natural, just so long as they don’t let on to the impressionable public.
