Industry Destroyed With a Stroke of Obama’s Pen

One reason economies do not flourish under authoritarian regimes is that there is not much use working hard and investing when an arbitrary decree can wipe out an entire industry overnight:

[Last] Friday, President Barack Obama [was] expected to sign into law a federal highway bill with a section that redefines tobacco manufacturers to include any business with a roll-your-own cigarette machine and taxes those products at the same rate as packaged smokes. …

The machines, which cost about $33,000 each, allow customers to pick their own tobacco and pour it into a device that can roll the tobacco into a carton, or about 200 cigarettes, within minutes.

Obama signed it, which will shut down over 1,000 of the pricey machines, throwing their owners out of work. But at least they can collect disability.

On tips from Shawn, J, Dan Feely, and Bob Roberts.

maybe he’d've allowed those businesses to operate if you could also roll spliffs loaded with CHOOM

“We have to pass the bill (or sign it into law) to find out what’s in it.”

So Obama does not have any way to help the job market and fix the unemployment numbers.

Yet he can certainly add to the number of unemployed (Stroke of the Pen, Law of the Land)… AND he has no problem taking credit for any insignificant and temporary drop in the employment numbers.

What the fuck does this have to do with a highway bill?
And whatever happened to free enterprise?

  5. Vic Kelley says:

I hope those businesses will continue to operate and find ways to avoid this law and avoid paying or collecting any taxes on tobacco. It’s too bad we don’t have as many smugglers as we used to. People should be able to buy cigarettes, gasoline, and other products without having to pay taxes on them.

Free Enterprise never fares well under Marxism, petty tyrants and Communists.

Be careful, Obama will one day soon (with a stroke of the pen) throw all Conservative run blogs, websites and commenters in prison, let alone out of work. We will look wistfully upon these days as the last of having some freedom.

Just go on disability, vote Democrat, participate in the three minute hate and be ashamed to be Caucasian. Life can be so much better if we just stop resisting and drink the Flavor-aid. At least until we run out of Flavor-aid.

No worries, the put-upon Native Americans will still be able to continue their ancient tribal custom of selling untaxed cigarettes to paleface, in keeping with their heritage, and a socialist system which views some ethnic groups as more equal than others. As for your opportunity to do the same, forget about it. Discount cigarettes and slot machines are not part of your white heritage.

If Elizabeth Warren fails to win Scott Brown’s senate seat then she can always fall back on her heritage and sell cigarettes to the former customers of the bankrupted rolling machine entrepreneurs.

Free speech? Sure, but only if the Marxist-in-Chief allows it. All he need do is invent an “emergency“, and your free speech is gone. Would he actually do that? Hey, wake-up sheeple. It’s already a done deal.

  9. StanInTexas says:

Spider, what you describe is not an Obama trait, but a LIBERAL trait…

Liberals are all about choice, so long as you choose the way they think you should.
Liberals are all about free markets, so long as you spend your money the way they think you should.
And all Liberals ADORE free speech and freedom of religion, until you say something they dislike or you have a religious viewpoint that conflicts with their position du jour.

Obama did not invent this concept, he just feels that there is no longer any reason to hid it or lie about it.

    A message to all those who choose not to use tobacco products;

What will you do/say when they get around to banning a legal product you choose to use?

Bo, you mean like Soda or Salt?

    CIGARETTE SMOKERS…

  13. Bob Smith says:

We all agree the sole purpose of this is to help Camel, Marlboro, et al? At least Obama is consistent in favoring big businesses over small (when he should favor neither).

  14. Infidel says:

How did this bill get through the alledgedly Republican House. We’re doomed; both parties are run by traitorous fascists.

First they came for the smokers…
