Can you imagine how expensive clothing would be if every stitch was made by folks making $9 an hour? Can you imagine how expensive lettuce would be if every head was picked by someone making that much?
The politicians forced banks to loan to poor credit risks or face charges of racism. Fannie and Freddie gleefully made loans to even worse credit risks.
The market, faced with such horrible risks imposed on them from without, reduced the risk by creating the derivatives.
Derivative speculation didn’t cause the housing collapse; it was a symptom of the disease before the collapse, like a migrane before the stroke.
