Hipster Stampers Live Large

As a result of Obama’s appalling reelection, expect your tax burden to go shooting upward in 2013. Hey, somebody has to pay for this:

In the John Waters-esque sector of northwest Baltimore — equal parts kitschy, sketchy, artsy and weird — Gerry Mak and Sarah Magida sauntered through a small ethnic market stocked with Japanese eggplant, mint chutney and fresh turmeric. After gathering ingredients for that evening’s dinner, they walked to the cash register and awaited their moments of truth.

“I have $80 bucks left!” Magida said. “I’m so happy!”

“I have $12,” Mak said with a frown.

The two friends weren’t tabulating the cash in their wallets but what remained of the monthly allotment on their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program debit cards, the official new term for what are still known colloquially as food stamps.

Magida, a 30-year-old art school graduate, had been installing museum exhibits for a living until the recession caused arts funding — and her usual gigs — to dry up. She applied for food stamps last summer, and since then she’s used her $150 in monthly benefits for things like fresh produce, raw honey and fresh-squeezed juices from markets near her house in the neighborhood of Hampden, and soy meat alternatives and gourmet ice cream from a Whole Foods a few miles away.

“I’m eating better than I ever have before,” she told me.

Until the crash Obama’s wealth redistribution is making inevitable. Then she’ll be eating out of dumpsters — just like those of us who work instead of vote for a living.

Mak, 31, grew up in Westchester, graduated from the University of Chicago and toiled in publishing in New York during his 20s before moving to Baltimore last year with a meager part-time blogging job and prospects for little else. About half of his friends in Baltimore have been getting food stamps since the economy toppled, so he decided to give it a try; to his delight, he qualified for $200 a month.

“I’m sort of a foodie, and I’m not going to do the ‘living off ramen’ thing,” he said, fondly remembering a recent meal he’d prepared of roasted rabbit with butter, tarragon and sweet potatoes. “I used to think that you could only get processed food and government cheese on food stamps, but it’s great that you can get anything.”

Ask of Obama, and he shall deliver — for awhile.

At Magida’s brick row house in Baltimore, she and Mak minced garlic while observing that one of the upsides of unemployment was having plenty of time to cook elaborate meals, and that among their friends, they had let go of any bad feelings about how their food was procured.

“It’s not a thing people feel ashamed of, at least not around here,” said Mak. “It feels like a necessity right now.”

Savory aromas wafted through the kitchen as a table was set with a heaping plate of Thai yellow curry with coconut milk and lemongrass, Chinese gourd sautéed in hot chile sauce and sweet clementine juice, all of it courtesy of government assistance.

Wouldn’t it be nice to think that at some point people would rise up against the useless parasites who are bleeding us to death? Unfortunately, it if were going to happen, it would have by now. Once you grant government the power to steal from some to give to others, civilization is lost.

On a tip from AC.

It’s funny, in a sick sort of way… The hard left has always accused the welfare state as the buffer that prevents the oppressed from rising up in revolt. Actually, the welfare state is preventing people that would be up in arms over the left’s corruption of the economy.

As soon as I get my voter registration changed from Republican to Independent, I’m going to apply for food stamps. It’s my little way of hurrying the crash along so people will finally wake up.

I have a comfortable and stable job, but since the Dems say food stamps are a great way to stimulate the economy, I’m going to try to do my part.

  • Tchhht!!!

Hey, what the hell. My extended unemployment benefits are going to expired before I collect the full amount, and congress is taking a vacation. I WANT MY BENEFITS!!! Screw Obama. I am doing my part to help collapse the system. Then, maybe, just maybe sanity will return and we can start rebuilding America. I am not holding my breath though.

Marmo, let me know if you have any success with food stamps. I WANT SOME!!!

“Wouldn’t it be nice to think that at some point people would rise up against the useless parasites who are bleeding us to death?”

You mean the bankers who tanked the economy and caused massive unemployment?

  • Rich

According to Ann Barnhardt – it is just a matter of time until the system is brought down..
And Republicans in D.C. are not the answer..

    Monkey,

Let me correct that for you:

“You mean the Democrats who tanked the economy and caused massive unemployment?”

    There, feel better now?

    Pinworm.

I just hope the bag of rice and beans I buy at the first of the month will last me to months end.

How do this people get all this hand outs. Do the young

I can’t tell you how honored I feel to be able to feed a liberal arts major – a superior human in every way. I resent being a producer. I want to be just like Sarah. But the only way to do that is to move to San Francisco and get a free sex-change! Hmm. I wonder if the City of San Francisco will pay for my travel, too?

Yep – that’s the Zero ticket – everything is free – those stupid conservatives will pay. Anyone stupid enough to WORK for a living deserves to have their money redistributed to the deserving. They bitch about it – but they’ll still pay.

  • Jimbo

Oh wow! Since I’m going to be a non-producing sexually mutilated candyass leach, I get to choose a new name. Hm. What should my new name be? I’ve got it! Candyass Leach. Perfect!

America’s mindless tolerance of anything and everything will be it’s doom.

  • Hey look

“toiled in publishing” , “toiled”? Really?

I just signed up for The Party! I’ll get a genuine CARD to carry! I’m so excited!

The food stamp shoppers “sauntered through a small ethnic market stocked”

That bothers me. More and more places accept EBT. Our local farmers market accepts it. I hate this. It makes it too convenient. The whole explosion of benefits is just too convenient. People are never going to be motivated to better themselves if it is just so easy to eat for free. I have always hated the idea of food stamps because the people I saw using them were coloreds who were dragging around too many kids they couldn’t afford.

I used to drive an armored truck. Back then we delivered food stamps – we delivered cases of them they were little coupon books. We’d pull up to a “community center” or welfare office and the place would be packed with pissed looking coloreds. My truck was always late – I caused that.

It never stops they have no incentive but to reproduce and get more benefits. I’m really upset because now non-coloreds are being corrupted by the food stamps and the mindset that comes with them.

    Bring back the government cheese!!!
In my area some farmers’ markets offer double the dollars when purchased food is purchased with the EBT card.

“The government that can give you everything is the government that can take it away.” The culling of the herd is about to begin. as frustrated as I am that they have voted this upon us all, I can’t help being sad at all the destruction that lies ahead. 1930′s Ukraine will be upon us.
