Details of the shooting are changing as the media stops reporting rumors and starts reporting facts. Unfortunately that means some of us who passed on early reports, assuming the media had done their job (boy, are we dumb to think the still do that!), were mistaken.

In any case, keep up with the story if interested.

  • Bob Roberts

Now, one Chicago alderman wants to make it a crime to feed pigeons.

Technically it may already be. That’s the problem with laws – once passed they’re used in ways that were never intended, which are not appropriate. There’s some laws having to do with migratory birds which, though those species don’t actually migrate here in San Diego, the laws are still applied as if they do. That’s just one example. In a similar way, no doubt there’s some law, somewhere, that can be used to say it’s illegal to feed the pigeons perhaps. But this guy just wants to make it clear – wants to make a NEW LAW banning feeding pigeons.

    Good luck enforcing it.

What you going to do – round up all the homeless drunks who feed pigeons?

An example of what I was saying above.

Reporters and producers around the country, frantically searching for information online about the alleged school shooter, found what seemed like a match. Ryan Lanza, 24, was believed responsible for the deaths of 27 people in Newtown, Conn., at the Sandy Hook Elementary School.

The Facebook profile showed a Ryan Lanza from Newtown, Conn., who currently lives in Hoboken, N.J. — a male who looks like he’s in his 20s. The photo fits the description, so countless news orgs ran with it in stories and tweets.

Problem is, it seems to be the wrong guy.

Hours later, there were reports that Adam Lanza, 20, was the shooter, not his brother Ryan.

Bloomberg: Obama Must Take ‘Immediate Action’ Against Guns.

Boston Mayor: Time For ‘National Policy’.

MURDOCH: ‘When will politicians find courage to ban automatic weapons?’.

ALEX JONES: ‘THE FIX IS IN, THEY’RE COMING FOR OUR GUNS’.

Only problem is banning ONE TOOL won’t stop crazy people from attacking kids:

22 children slashed by knife-wielding adult at elementary school in China.

Unless we’re going to start banning guns, knives, baseball bats, golf clubs, microwave ovens (imagine being bashed over the head with one), pillows (suffocated while you sleep), wire and rope (strangled), cars, planes as well as all sticks and stones were not going to be able to stop people who are determined to kill from doing so.

  • Bob Roberts

Now I DO have an idea – require all principals (and selected other staff) at all schools to be proficient marksmen and to have and carry at all times suitable firearms as needed to at least hold off any attacker(s) until the authorities can be notified and can get there.

THAT should be a national action we can get behind to resolve this!

  • Bob Roberts

And on Murdoch’s comment (RE: Banning auto-wpns), didn’t the guy use two handguns, NOT AUTOMATIC WEAPONS? At least that’s what the media is saying now, though there’s also word four weapons were recovered at the scene, one of them a BUSHMASTER.

    Excuse me?

Elementary school principals and staff required to carry?

Again, you need to stick to conveying the news and refrain from commenting so personally on it.

Having said that, you AGAIN joined the MSM in misreporting!

Alas, I momentarily but accurately digress.

To report the news while inhaling, and opining on it while exhaling, is self-serving at best (sic) and misleading at worst.

i.e.: Hitler gassed a thousand people today in the city of Dresden…but in my opinion given his history it really wasn’t that many, and considering the burgeoning population, some say it might actually cut unemployment numbers.

Kinda like changing the 2nd Amendment from a right to a requirement.

Like maybe, gays have the right to be gay, so let’s require people to be gay.

    Bob…..that sucks.

The answer lies in enforcing existing laws and stiffening penalties for those who have proven themselves to be irresponsible. Long-term penalties for those possessing stolen firearms or firearms which have been used in a crime (police agencies routinely dispose of those weapons); for those who use firearms in the commission of a crime; for those smuggling firearms (yes, Holder); for felons; for those who carry without a permit; for those who illegally acquire firearms: and for those who hold banned weapons (my definitions).

A shooter went into a school – you say arm the principal and staff.

A shooter went into a theater – is the projectionist required to carry?

Convenience store clerk – required to carry?

    Mall patrons…required?

Nonsensical reactions requiring the carrying of firearms is as dangerous as disallowing them.

    ———————-
Now you went a little off the deep end but I can readily understand why. But let’s just take a look at the “facts” that liberal lunatic presented:

    1) Since 1982, there have been 61 mass murders carried out with firearms across the country

That’s about 2 per year. Now how many incidents of drunk driving that resulted in fatalities, sometimes multiples, have occurred in the same period? How many lives were lost as a result? Yet nobody suggests we ban cars! How many planes were flown into buildings since then and how many died as a result? Yet I don’t hear him saying we should ban planes!

    2) Incidents where guns were used, often in places with strict and arguably unconstitutional gun laws that are already in place, had guns involved that were LEGALLY OBTAINED in 5 out of 6 cases. So clearly gun laws don’t work. Plus even if guns didn’t exist those people who were driven to murder would still have been – they just would have used a different tool and, for all we know, maybe would have been MORE EFFECTIVE at killing as a result as guns sort of announce their presence and allow people to react.

    3) About half of the 20 worst mass shootings in the last 50 years took place in countries that have even stricter gun laws than the U.S., proving that stricter gun laws won’t solve the problem.

    4) Lots of guns don’t necessarily mean lots of shootings, as you can see in Israel and Switzerland. In fact there’s evidence that PROPER, LEGAL gun ownership actually reduces violent and other crime.

    5) Of the 11 deadliest shootings in the US, five have happened from 2007 onward, concurrent with the Democrats ramping up of their virulent emotional campaigns against morality, decency, success, women, the family and gun ownership. Coincidence? I THINK NOT!

    6) If you cherry pick the data you can falsely imply America is more violent than other places which tend to sweep reports under the rug, but even then you have to admit that violence in America is on the decline.

NOTE they even admitted that they left out at least two countries in their cherry-picked sample group because they were MORE VIOLENT.

    7) Gun ownership in the United States is declining overall.

So if gun ownership is the problem, the problem is solving itself and there’s no need for unconstitutional government interference.

    8) Though they claim otherwise, the fact is more guns mean LESS violent crimes as those intent on committing them need to take into account the possibility of armed response. Of course they’ll point to some liberal “study” that was tailor made to “prove” their predetermined conclusion before it was even started, but we all know that’s nonsense.

    8) And, of course, they claim that gun control laws work, but apparently they don’t bother really being honest about it as most of these shootings occur in states with some pretty strict gun laws and in fact in cities known to have some of the strictest gun regulations in the nation. Of course they cherry pick the data to come to a conclusion completely opposite from reality.

    9) They admit, amazingly enough, that gun control sentiment IS WANING. More people think gun control should be WEAKER or left alone than those who say tighten it.

    10) Not surprisingly, they revisit the point since their first look resulted in the opposite conclusion from what they had hoped. They then claim that support for SPECIFIC weapon control measures are well-supported. Yeah, I don’t want my neighbor (the crazy one) to be able to buy a tank, naturally! Or a .50 cal. Or an automatic weapon with big magazines. So yeah, obviously if you cherry pick the rules you want to push you’re going to be able to show there’s a lot of support for some rules.

    11) Shootings don’t tend to substantially affect views on gun control.

That’s because smart people know guns are just a tool and if guns aren’t available murderers will find and use another tool instead. Plus as long as you allow police and the military to have guns some will wind up in criminal hands even if you totally ban guns for everyone else. Just look in countries like Mexico where that is essentially the case.

    12) The South is the most violent region in the United States. Note they leave out that’s true largely due to the disproportionate black on black and black on white crime rates.

    CORRECTION TO THE ABOVE

Apparently Clinton will not testify after all.

Apparently she’s “too sick” to testify. Apparently she has a “concussion”. Yeah, I’ll agree she’s brain damaged, alright.

NOW AS NOTED, much of what the media has been saying turned out to be wrong so far, so take all this with a grain of salt.

It appears likely the guns used in the CT shooting were essentially “stolen” from the perp’s mom,

i.e. he killed her first then used her guns, obviously without her knowledge or consent, because he JUST KILLED HER, to go kill others.

They are also claiming Lanza was involved in an altercation at the school the day before the shooting.

The theory they’re developing was that he came back to kill the four staff members involved and he killed the three of them that were there that day, along with a number of innocents.

There are also questionable reports Lanza tried to buy a rifle and was prevented from doing so. The store where it allegedly happened seems to be saying it’s nonsense.

If true, perhaps what they need to do is have stores report people who come in to buy guns then suddenly lose interest when they’re informed there is a waiting period?

They’re going to make a big deal about the mom’s avid gun collecting and the fact she didn’t take adequate measures to keep the guns out of the hands of her obviously lunatic son.

This kid came from a good, though broken, family. His dad (earlier reported as shot and killed, apparently in error) was a VP at GE Finance, they’re saying.

The letter contains a detailed list of questions, including:

“According to press reports, you have a government issued email account under the alias ‘Richard Windsor.’ Is this accurate? Does this email account still exist, and do you use it?”

“According to press reports, on November 20, 2012, EPA issued a statement indicating that ‘[f]or more than a decade, EPA administrators have been assigned two official, government issued email accounts: a public account and an internal account.’ How many email accounts have been assigned to you at the agency? Oh, this just in, the CT event IS OBAMA’S FAULT!

Obama administration, Congress quietly let school security funds lapse:

Government officials told the Washington Guardian on Friday night that two Justice Department programs that had provided more than $200 million to schools for training, security equipment and police resources over the last decade weren’t renewed in 2011 and 2012, and that a separate program that provided $800 million to put police officers inside the schools was ended a few years earlier.

So perhaps back when Democrats controlled both houses in Congress and also the White House they deleted $800 million that would have put police officers inside the schools? So had the Democrats not done this there may have been an officer, possibly an armed officer, there at the school?

And if the kid really WAS in an altercation the day before, why didn’t the school and the police follow it up?

Again, requiring school personnel to carry is insane!

Requiring anyone to carry is insane unless its cops.

I didn’t say a thing about them not having the right to carry if they so desire – they should be able to – in school zones, hospital zones, or taxi zones.

They should be afforded the right to protect themselves and the law should provide for that. However, they should not be mandated to do so.

Big difference. Go back and read what I wrote in that context.

How can I disagree with the inference in your last paragraph – we agree – we’re on the same page.

Why is requiring school personnel to carry any different from requiring a Brink’s driver to carry? If the job description requires an employee to be responsible for the safety of persons or property then it is reasonable for said employee to be armed.

Teachers are responsible for the safety of students. It would be great if schools could be protected by officers and design features, but the cost on that might not be feasible.

We don’t need every single school employee carrying. Just a few would stop these shootings.

The carrot is more effective than the stick.

Offer the ability to carry, a reimbursement for a pistol and permitting, and $15/week for doing so and you will see enough faculty armed to shut down these active shooters.

When you are confronted by an active shooter, you have two choices:

    1. Meet force with force.
    2. Die.

Waiting for the police is not an option.

I’m as much 2nd Amendment as you, but you cannot require someone to carry if they don’t want to – its un-American.

I agree with Sam Adams when he suggests a theater owner might be held liable for not allowing CC customers, when his place is shot up.

And I agree with your, “Offer the ability to carry, a reimbursement for a pistol and permitting, and $15/week for doing so.” I would probably add more $ per week and add lessons and range time.

But you cannot mandate that, it has to be voluntary.

If the option was open to principals or staff and none agreed to carry and help protect the kids, then they might also be liable.

Its truly a sad comment on the state of moral decay in America when we have to discuss these options and scenarios.

Again, requiring school personnel to carry is insane!

Requiring anyone to carry is insane unless its cops.
    ______________

Fair enough. Most kids graduating with an education degree have been sufficiently brainwashed that they won’t come near a gun.

By the same token, most aren’t sufficiently educated to be actually teaching your kids, either.

But Brink’s can require its drivers to carry, otherwise they aren’t able to do their job, just as a moving company can require that members of moving crews not be midgets in wheelchairs.

Now we don’t need every single teacher to carry to do their jobs, but we do need some. The principal, vice principal, and counselors might need to carry, too.

We can split hairs over who, but the fact remains that many innocents are dead because nobody carried, and every expected somebody else to keep those kids safe.

If the children aren’t safe then somebody isn’t doing their job, just as would be the case if a Brink’s driver went out on his route equipped with only a safety whistle.

Mandating individuals to carry is even worse than saying they cannot.

Nowhere would the law of unintended consequences be more apt.

Can you say, “can of worms?”

“…but the fact remains that many innocents are dead because nobody carried, and every(one)[sic] expected somebody else to keep those kids safe. If the children aren’t safe then somebody isn’t doing their job.”

How can I disagree with that?

Schools should be a CC zone and teachers should be able and advised to carry, but never mandated to do so.

If you want to compare to Brink’s…Brink’s drivers have an inherently dangerous job – so much so, they wear uniforms and bullet-proof vests, work in pairs for backup, carry heavy weapons, and travel in an armored vehicle, plus they are a private company where employees must adhere to a company safety policy which is probably governed by the insurance industry.

Should teachers then be mandated to wear uniforms, travel in pairs, and drive a tank? Should Brink’s drivers be required to drive a Prius and study Alinsky?

Again, I feel teachers should be allowed to have firearms on site and available.

If you can come up with a policy to mandate the carrying of firearms by teachers, why then can’t you mandate anything you want? Oh that’s right, Obama is already doing it.

Mandate the purchase of health insurance. Mandate transvestites to serve in the Marine Corps. Mandate taxes. What’s next, mandate the attendance at a mosque to understand diversity? Please don’t answer that.

Its counterintuitive, it oppresses individual freedom, and it is the easy way out – eliminating well thought out creative solutions.

Private schools can afford to beef up security by installing better surveillance systems, creating safety procedures, and hiring a guard(s).

Public schools can form an alliance with their local police or security agencies whereby officers could work off-duty shifts for pay. Many police officers are also parents and would love the overtime and the chance to safeguard kids. This is an especially good ongoing way to showcase the humanity of the police, particularly in urban areas, where they are often viewed as the enemy.

Each school budget will of necessity have to add another employee but such is life.

And, the more teachers and staff who decide to carry and work with security the better.

    BTW

I believe there is a moving company in Seattle that only hires midgets in wheelchairs. Only gay Marxist pro-choice midgets in government issued solar wheelchairs.

They can’t be called midgets anymore that’s politically incorrect. They’re to be referred to as genetically modified, vertically challenged, socially liberated mini-citizens.

Government grants and benefits will follow.

  • Sam Adams

Should teachers then be mandated to wear uniforms, travel in pairs, and drive a tank?
    ____________

    Which raises an interesting question….
What percentage of school teachers will ever be placed in a violent situation? Our government is all set to violate everyone’s rights without considering whether violence in the schools is a major problem we face.

Of course those who don’t wish to let any crisis go to waste never want to put anything in perspective.

For example…how many children are killed each year by cars?

  • Alphamail

    Sam Adams

    Exactly.

Giving up our rights for security makes us less secure.
