Banning Handguns Produced More Gun Crime in Britain

Following the horrific massacre in Newtown, all liberals can agree that we need still more stringent gun control — something along the lines of what they have in hyper-statist Britain. Let’s see what effect once great Britain’s draconian authoritarianism has had. Here’s a report from 2009:

The latest Government figures show that the total number of firearm offences in England and Wales has increased from 5,209 in 1998/99 to 9,865 last year — a rise of 89 per cent.

In some parts of the country, the number of offences has increased more than five-fold.

In eighteen police areas, gun crime at least doubled.

Tony Blair and his gang of Labour leftists used the Dunblane Massacre as a pretext to inflict the Nazi-esque Firearms Acts in 1997. They banned private ownership of all handguns.

Lancashire suffered the single largest rise in gun crime, with recorded offences increasing from 50 in 1998/99 to 349 in 2007/08, an increase of 598 per cent. …

The number of people injured or killed by guns, excluding air weapons, has increased from 864 in 1998/99 to a provisional figure of 1,760 in 2008/09, an increase of 104 per cent.

If you find this even remotely surprising, please read John Lott’s More Guns Less Crime.

Is there any reason for us to repeat Britain’s foolish mistakes?

And vice versa.

Of course “firearm offenses” are going to increase when defending your self, home and property with a firearm becomes a crime. But, as a general rule, “Gun Free Zones” are going to be regarded as a “target rich environment” by the criminal types.

As an American living in Canada — I have access to both U.S. and Canadian tv channels. I keep hearing on American tv channels gun control advocates who speak with a British accent (typically they’re representing some American university or they’re employed by some American university — and they’re utterly opposed to “guns.” Just as the vast majority of Canadians cannot fathom the Second amendment (it is beyond their comprehension), so too the Brits.

    But THAT

  • Jeanettesca

    Wow, major posting fail.

What I meant was… THAT won’t happen over here because our liberals are so much smarter than England’s liberals. They’ll succeed where all else have failed because they are just that special.

The media happily blames legally owned handguns for the “culture of gun violence,” but says nothing about fairy-tale spaghetti westerns premiering on Christmas Day about runaway slaves mass murdering white folks.

In true Tarantino form, buckets of blood explode from characters as they are shot or shredded to pieces by rabid dogs in “Django Unchained.”

Despite Friday’s mass shooting, the press junket for the movie, which opens in theaters Christmas Day, continued in New York as scheduled on Saturday.

But, it’s good to know that Tarantino and liberal actors aren’t going to be part of the lets ban guns chorus:

Tarantino, whose credits include “Pulp Fiction” and the “Kill Bill” volumes, said he was tired of defending his films each time the U.S. is shocked by gun violence. He said “tragedies happen” and blame should fall on those guilty of the crimes.

Foxx’s co-star Kerry Washington said she believes the film’s explicit brutality serves an important purpose in educating audiences about the atrocities of slavery.

But it does produce a spike in the knife violence. The result – deranged cries to ban… kitchen knifes.

“A team from West Middlesex University Hospital said violent crime is on the increase – and kitchen knives are used in as many as half of all stabbings…”

Article is a little old, but it illustrates what happens very well.

About 12 Americans are killed by illegal aliens DAILY yet no one is calling for a ban on illegal aliens! Is it a coincidence that the increase in Britain’s gun crimes coincides with the increase in Britain’s Muslim population?

I am posting this at every blog I visit that is addressing the Sandy Hook tragedy, so I apologize in advance, but it is critical we bring facts to this discussion.

It is an emotional topic, and I can understand the gun-haters’emotional outbursts, but we must respond with charity and the facts.

Fact #1: Violent crime is down from 2000 to 2009, as is the use of a firearm in commission of a crime.

Here are a few excellent links:

Aweful Reactions to Sandy Hook Shooting

Here is a link to an DOJ report:

US DOJ Report: Criminal Victimization, 2009

    Some excerpts from the report:

“For overall violent crime, firearms, knives, and other weapons were used in about equal proportions”

Weapons were used in 22% of all violent crimes in 2009

“Between 2000 and 2009, the overall rate of firearm violence declined from 2.4 to 1.4 victimizations per 1,000 persons age 12 or older (table 10).”

Firearms were used in about 8% of all violent crime incidents in 2009.

During the 10-year period, about 6% to 9% of all violent crime incidents were committed with firearms”

Established facts and Christian charity must be our departure point in our search for answers.

    Interesting chart S. Thank you.

I’ve looked up the gun control laws chart for comparison (courtesy of open society – Soros?).

The comparison goes for the most as expected. Firearms murders as a % of all murders – the states with most gun control laws – suffer most firearms murders .

The only exception is South East… like a poison coming from the direction of DC.

More people die from staph infections at hospitals each year…CDC puts it around 90k.
    Let’s ban hospitals.

“The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to possess arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by so doing. Indeed, I would go so far as to say that the supply of arms to the underdogs is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let’s not have any native militia or native police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order throughout the occupied Russian territories, and a system of military strong-points must be evolved to cover the entire occupied country.”

This confiscation, which continues with the utmost energy, has given satisfactory results.”

You’re largely wasting your facts and truth arguing against emotional outbursts. They’ve been programmed, or programmed themselves, that the statements of the Brady bunch et al are gospel sent down from above. You ever notice how these data/talking points never change in the face of hard data to the contrary?

If you tell them things that don’t mesh with hat they’ve accepted, or that require rational, logical analysis, they’ll either filter it out, or run back to the preprogrammed response. They’ll fade out with a blank stare like Frito in Idiocracy when our hero asked a question requiring some thought.

You should see the reaction when one asks me why I have a *gun* and I answer “To shoot people.” There’s no preprogrammed response to that, so I get deer in the headlights, and you could easily imagine hearing the gears grind and crash.

All you could hope to do would be to deprogram them one at a time like scientologists.

  • Sinister66

Kinda off topic and you check with whatever state you live in but here in Nevada we have probably the most lax gun laws. The school super intendant can authorize teachers and/or school staff to carry concealed in schools.

    https://www.leg.state.nv.us/NRS/NRS-202.html#NRS202Sec3673

NRS 202.3673 Permittee authorized to carry concealed firearm while on premises of public building; exceptions; penalty.
    (a) A public building that is located on the property of a public school or a child care facility or the property of the Nevada System of Higher Education, unless the permittee has obtained written permission to carry a concealed firearm while he or she is on the premises of the public building pursuant to subparagraph (3) of paragraph (a) of subsection 3 of NRS 202.265.

  • Sam Adams

Sinister, Utah has you beat. Any one with a concealed carry permit can carry at any public school in Utah, including public universities. No permission or notification is required. Many folks who give CC classes will give school personnel either a break on the cost to attend class, or will train them for free.

  • Sam Adams

BTW, about 60% of home robberies in the UK happen when people are at home; they simply don’t have the means to protect themselves, and they are punished if they do.

In the US, the number is closes to 13%. Most criminals will tell you that breaking into an occupied house in the US is a good way to get shot.

When kids from minority groups get shot, nobody cares. When Israel launched missiles at the school on Gaza, everybody was too busy jerking off. Why should i care about people who dont give a damn about me?”

“A team from West Middlesex University Hospital said violent crime is on the increase – and kitchen knives are used in as many as half of all stabbings…”

And the Brit will argue that, well yes, but most people survive knifings. Their mentality seems to be that if there is no gun involved, and you survive the attack, then it’s almost as if it doesn’t count. And the criminals go after the elderly there and do so violently.

I have a spreadsheet of Brit crimes by category (and they fudge their numbers) and the overall level of violence is far higher there than in the US as whole, and it is not limited to pockets like it is here.

The most ridiculous story I ever saw was the case of a knife-armed robber of a convenience store. He got into a scuffle with the owner and stabbed him in the neck and killed him. It was declared an accidental death and he was not charged for it. I kid you not.

And the murder rates in Europe are fudged. They exclude anything that is not deemed intentional murder. Which is why Germany has about 800 homicides listed in its intentional homicide rate, but more than that excluded by being listed as unintentional homicide. Sweden has more than 200 unintentionl homicides excluded from the murder rate. Here, of course, you have very few homicides that are kept out of the statistics. In Virginia in 2008, for example, there were 311 arrests for murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, which go into the homicide rate. Only 12 for negligent manslaughter. Yet in Sweden, it is the opposite. Around 80 official intentional homicides, but more than 200 unintentional homicides, which are not counted in the official rate. Their actual rates, if counted the same way as here, are at least twice as high.
