Why We Need High-Capacity Magazines

A short-term goal of the government–media complex is to ban high-capacity magazines. “What do you need them for?” ask authoritarians, as if that were the issue, rather than, “What gives you thugs the right to take them away from me?” But let’s answer their question anyway:

The incident happened at a home on Henderson Ridge Lane in Loganville [Georgia] around 1 p.m. The woman was working in an upstairs office when she spotted a strange man outside a window, according to Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman. He said she took her 9-year-old twins to a crawlspace before the man broke in using a crowbar.

But the man eventually found the family.

Thankfully, the woman was armed.

The woman then shot him five times, but he survived, Chapman said. He said the woman ran out of bullets but threatened to shoot the intruder if he moved.

“She’s standing over him, and she realizes she’s fired all six rounds. And the guy’s telling her to quit shooting,” Chapman said.

She was able to escape with her children. It’s fortunate that the good guys are better at counting to six than the bad guys.

Once again, the precious right to bear arms saves innocent life. Although her .38 revolver did the job, this story would have been less hairy had she more rounds to work with — and that’s with only one intruder.

If the governmedia had its way, the heroine of this tale would have been a helpless victim — very likely raped and murdered in front of her children. Helpless victims are easy to rule.

“Harry Callahan: I know what you’re thinking. “Did he fire six shots or only five?” Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk? “

  • Buffalobob

Was it not reported she hit him in the head several times? Is this thug’s head so thick that the slugs bounced off?

A whole lot of people learned absolutely nothing from the Slurpy Giffords shooting . So I will spell it out .

DO NOT USE CHEAP WHITE BOX FMJ AMMO IN YOUR SELF DEFENSE WEAPON !

Check out this guy that got nabbed over the weekend in NY— 5 mags , 5 felonies . Now you know what the folks from NORML have been hollerin’ about all these years .

Injured veteran arrested in weapons investigation

Nathan H. Haddad, 32, of 25240 Waddingham Road, town of LeRay, is facing five felony counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was released without bail before town of Watertown Justice Andrew N. Capone, and is ordered to appear Wednesday in town of LeRay Court.

Deputies made the arrest shortly before 7:30 p.m. Sunday on Steinhilber Road in the town of LeRay, where he is accused of possessing five 30-round AR-15 magazines of ammunition. He is cited under a state penal law statute which prohibits possession of “a large capacity ammunition feeding device.”

The ammunition was found in his vehicle during a traffic stop, according to the sheriff’s office.

Mr. Haddad was deployed four times during his decade in the Army, the Times reported in a story featuring him in September 2009. At that time, he was a staff sergeant with the 3rd Battalion, 85th Infantry, Warrior in Transition Unit at Fort Drum, undergoing aquatic physical therapy for an injury he suffered in South Korea during special forces training. He was discharged from the Army in October 2010, according to Fort Drum.

This is why you need a 12ga auto-shottie with an extended mag as your self-defense weapon. A couple of ka-booms and a dead scumbag is for certain.

Not to be confused with low-capacity magazines, i.e. Newsweak (deceased)

Good against zombies, too. Or liberal thugs—but I repeat myself.

But gee, a robbery only last a few minutes.

  • Joe

Is it too late to reload and put a couple more in him and finish him off?
That’ll save her from the lawyer/vulture/vermin scum from sueing her for this piece of semi-human garbage.

  • RobM1981

I think I read that she had a .38 Special, but I could be wrong. If I’m right, then there is no such thing as an extended magazine on a revolver.

    But you already know that…

  • Rickyd

Problem is, this piece of shit will be back on the streets in a not so long time. She should have shot him in the head and we’d have just cleaned up the gene pool at bit. Vermin bastards.

The 38 is not an effective self defense round. The US army found this out before WWI, and commissioned John Browning to develop a gun that was effective. He developed the Browning 1911, along with the 45 ACP round.

FWIW, a 9 mm round isn’t an effective self defense round either. A 357 magnum is an effective self defense round, as is any other round starting with a 4.

  • metalgarth

What about hollow point 38 Special?

  • IslandLifer

    What Gunny said.

  • Metryq

FWIW, a 9 mm round isn’t an effective self defense round either.

The whole “stopping power” issue is highly debatable. While a 45 ACP will knock down the target, 9×19 is somewhat more notorious for over-penetration, which is why one should use HPs, or even “safety slugs” like Glaser.

357 is too much of a good thing.

The video DEADLY WEAPONS has an excellent demonstration of a spectrum of ammunition (including FMJ, HP and frangibles) on various targets, including a car door, windshield, and an ersatz human chest. (Wooden board and a gallon jug full of water, rather than ballistic gel.)

The liberals are constantly telling us that hunters and target shooters don’t need more than a 10 round clip.
I am greatly surprised to find that we fought the Revolutionary War to secure hunting and target shooting rights!
It’s amazing that men fought and died for the right to hunt and target shoot.
I would have thought it had something to do with having the right to protect yourself both from criminal elements and government tyranny.
But I’m better educated now thanks to the main stream media.

  • Winston Smith

The best home defense weapon would be a AN/GAU-8 30mm Avenger seven-barrel cannon firing depleted uranium rounds. One shot and the punks head would have been taken clean off or at least had a very large hole in the middle.

  • justme

Well Dave, if she were raped and/or killed it would further their cause that “We” need more unionized police to protect “us” and better teachers to educate that poor young man who did this heinous act because a failing educational system did not provide him with the proper learning environment that would nurture him in his rap career.

Victims pay dividends – successful self defense only empowers the individual and makes them LESS reliant on the State. Now how would that help our “friends” in government to enrich themselves in terms of power and money?

    Silly, silly, little people….

  • Winston Smith

They should make a 100 caliber Magnum Handgun.

  • http://www.itsaboutliberty.com MissAnthropy

A lot of the caliber wars have been rendered obsolete by the new design and manufacturing of hollow points over the past 20 years. They are much, much better than the “classic” hollow point designs. The 9mm is absolutely an effective defensive cartridge with current generation hollow points (Federal HST, Gold Dot, etc). The lady in this story probably had .38 Special target ammo, like lead round nose or wad cutters. At least it did the job of stopping the perp. Better than fingernails at least.

  • snuss

IMHO, the best self-defense gun is the largest caliber that you are comfortable shooting, and can shoot with accuracy.
If you can’t put rounds on target, a .50 cal. Desert Eagle won’t help you (though the sound and muzzle flash might scare the crook away). See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFJjaj7pXsA

  • Winston Smith

Someone should make a 666 caliber handgrun. That would make a really big hole. Call it the Hellraiser 666.

  • Jeff

Any time a liberal states that you don’t need to have it, is a reason to have it. So why do I need a high capacity magazine: because you don’t want me to have it.

    I agree with Miss Anthropy
The more potential holes in zombies,(fired from any of these weapons) the safer we all are.

  • Winston Smith

Im in favor of banning the following high capacity magazines.

    America (magazine)
    The American Prospect
    The Atlantic
    The Brooklyn Rail
    The Chicagoan
    Democracy (journal)
    Dissent (magazine)
    Guernica Magazine
    Harper’s Magazine
    Liberation (magazine)
    Mother Jones (magazine)
    Multinational Monitor
    The Nation
    The New Republic
    The Progressive
    Rolling Stone
    Sojourners
    Utne Reader
    Washington Monthly
    World Policy Journal

  • Naqamel

A 9mm is the minimum calibre I’d use for self defense. A .40 or a .45 ACP is better, *IF* you can handle the gun. (Ladies, you can handle a 9mm, I promise). With a good hollowpoint round, or a self defense round like a Federal Hydrashok or (better) Hornady Critical Defense / Critcal Max round – even in 9mm – is going to get the job done.

38? Better have hollowpoints, but you’re better off with a 9mm.

And the posters above mentioning a 12 gauge shotgun? 00 buck or 1oz slug and the perp is going nowhere but down.

  • Winston Smith

Anti tank round would work too.

  • Katya Kakhov

    A rape , like a robbery can last only 30 seconds ….

    But a ….”murder” is forever .

  • Logic_Mine

Only people who have a “BAD AIM” need high capacity magazines.

But they are FUN as hell to let loose every once in awhile. And who am I to dictate one’s shooting style? Sometimes you can get a very good result with “SPRAY & PRAY” espescially on angry mobs.

  • Mr Evilwrench

Only people with bad aim or a target rich environment, you mean.

  • dan

a tool for every job….30 round mag 9mm for suppressive fire ; 45ca for meth heads and 357 and 44 mag for
shooting through cover and 50 cal for disabling vehicles….and buckshot for night-shooting although I hear an x hacksawed into a slug is interesting.
and a 22cal can be used for suppression as well as target and finishing work

  • Son of Taz

Hey Sam Adams, how about you put on your best business suit, stand 10 yards away from me and let’s test your statement that a 9mm isn’t an effective self-defense round, while I draw down on you with my Ruger SR9c to see what happens.

The woman is lucky to be alive, and her 38 did just what was needed – stopped the threat. Society would have been better served if she’d had tighter control and completely neutralized the threat, but at least she’s alive to talk about it. She was being terrorized after all.

A 9mm is a great self defense round, especially hollow points.

  • Duke

The good news is that the shooter remembered the first rule of combat: Anything worth shooting once is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap; Life is expensive.

The bad news is that she forgot another integral rule of combat: Never attend a gunfight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not begin with a “4.”

I’ve got some really great Hornady 185-gr hollow cavity handloads that come out of the .45 fast enough to make the creep’s brain fly out of both ears before the rest of it paints the wall behind him.

  • Hill

What no one has mentioned about this story, is that Liberals constantly tell us, that thieves do not want to tangle with people/homeowners. And when they think they may be discovered or they hear someone approaching, the criminal will flea-ASAP.

If this criminal heard something, why did he go further into the house? All the way up into the attic? Why did he not grab the valuables and just run?

The homeowner couldn’t possibly know the criminals mind. If his intent was robbery or something worse. She did the right thing.

One of the oldest laws of the jungle; don’t mess with a mother protecting her young!

Next time go for the head.

  • Fat Stanley

This is a good story with a happy ending. But to editorialize “— very likely raped and murdered in front of her children” is not helpful. Keep to the facts as they are reported. Although I note that this whole thread is predicated on a story from the mainstream media. Some Georgian who frequents this site should update us on what happens to the perp.

Best line of the news story “[Sheriff Chapman] said if Slater survives the night, doctors will try to operate in the morning to repair the damage.” I say, what’s the rush?

98% of the time a gun owner uses a gun to stop a crime, no shots are fired. In that respect a little 22 pistol is “effective.” A 22 pistol certainly is more effective than no gun, a baseball bat, or a hatpin. Even big guys generally don’t want to see how bad one of them hurts.

In this story, the bad guy simply gave up after being shot 5 times. In that respect, the 6 rounds of 38 ammo was “effective” in stopping the bad guy.

Do I want to stand there and have you try and shoot me with your 9mm handgun? Nope. On the other hand, if I am making the choice as to whether to shoot back at you with my wife’s 9mm or my 40 cal….both of them loaded with hollowpoints…..I’m reaching for the 40 cal…at least until one or the other of us grabs the 12 gauge. Personally I like my 12 gauge; it has a brighter tactical light.

I would reach for my 40 cal because it produces a projectile with greater energy which punches a bigger hole than a 9.

  • RobM1981

A handgun has one major advantage in home defense: it is easily wielded in tight spaces.

Even so, my home defense choice is a pump 12-Ga.

Reason #1, the sound. There is no mistaking the sound of a shotgun being pumped. It sounds exactly like you think it sounds, even if you’ve only heard them on TV. My goal is deterrence – I’m not looking for the OK Corral. Hear the noise, know that you facing an awful lot of dogs and firepower, and go away…

If someone is dumb enough to climb the stairs, and dumb enough to shoot a dog (or even threaten to)…

Reason #2, stopping power. I mostly shoot clays, so I have a lot of #7.5, 8 and 9 shot loads. Frankly, this is precisely what I want in a home environment – huge stopping power, with minimal wall penetration. There’s a reason that trench-shotguns were so loathed: at close range they are almost 100% effective. It’s hard to miss.

I defend your right to have as large a magazine as you’d like, but I don’t need a high capacity magazine for home defense. I’m not planning on riding out a siege.

I owned a 20 round magazine, many years ago in a state where it was legal. Frankly, I found that it was prone to jamming – and it was a “name brand.”

The 10 round magazine that came with the rifle was much more reliable.

MOST reliable, in my experience? Garand en blocs. Those rarely, rarely jam. Yeah, I know, it’s 8 rounds, but if it was good enough for the WWII Army and Marines, I’m pretty sure it’s good enough for me.

You can”t beat a Smoke Pole for Home defense, if its in the Middle of the Night, and you need to disengage a Safety, or Slam a round in the Pipe..Candy Cane Loads work Best…I have a 45 1911 for CQC, and 12GA leaning to hit Multiply Targets!

I often kill in self defense. Just 3 days ago I was attacked by 8 Taliban warriors sent by Obama. My 3 year daughter and my wife were planting a victory garden when the attack occurred. Lucky for me I had a tactical 250 rd clip in my .50 cal. bolt action varmint rifle (tactical , of course). I made quick work of the first 7 then dispatched the 8th with my tactical autoloading pistol sporting a tactical 62 rd clip.
Wheeww! 6th time this month I’ve killed in self defense. But with summer coming on self defense killings usually increase.
I am a pro. I can answer your questions with one word: tactical.
