The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rule requires all light passenger vehicles be equipped with an EDR [event data recorder] by Sep.1, 2014. Ninety-six percent of new cars already have them — measuring such inputs as speed, lateral acceleration, pedal effort, seat belt use, wheel spin, steering wheel turn and direction.
Big Government may not be the only villain in this attack on the Fourth Amendment. According to Tom Kowalick, head of the design team that is standardizing EDRs, they can be used to roll back the odometer or change the vehicle identification number.
Kowalick points out that YouTube has hundreds of clips that demonstrate how to hack into automobile EDRs. “Look at the number of people who are making tools, electronic tools, to do these things. You’ll find hundreds of thousands of people who are already clicking onto these sites. And they must be doing that for some purpose,” he said.
Car theft could be in for a renaissance.
As always with ham-fisted government intrusion, unintended consequences reduce bureaucrats’ pernicious designs to the tip of an iceberg.
