Graphics Depict Venezuela’s Present, the USA’s Future

Venezuela is similar to the USA in that it is blessed with abundant natural resources but cursed with leftist rule. It differs in that it is a decade further down the road to Hope & Change; the Venezuelan version of Barack Obama took power in 1999. Hugo Chavez was replaced by Nicolas Maduro, just as Obama is likely to be replaced by another leftist like Hillary Clinton. Venezuela’s present is America’s tomorrow. A few graphics from All Emerging Markets illustrate the state of affairs we have to look forward to unless we can change course.

As government feeds on itself to grow ever larger, deficits become a problem. Note how much deeper Venezuela is digging itself even than borderline failed states like Greece:

With deficits come inflation as the government prints money to pay off its debts — as we will inevitably experience eventually, with our national debt over $18 trillion:

venezuela-inflation

Meanwhile, the private economy that is the only real source of wealth staggers under the burden of ideologically motivated punitive regulations:

Here’s what all the Hope & Change means in terms of standard of living:

Left-wing rule entails anarchotyranny. This means that even as pushcart vendors are thrown in jail for operating without proper licensing, real criminals run rampant:

The leader on this list, El Salvador, is a major exporter of undocumented Democrats to the USA.

The ostensible point of forsaking prosperity and freedom for the sake of liberal ideology is to eliminate income inequality. Yet despite the rhetoric spewed by the likes of Chavez, Obama, Maduro, and Shrillary, income inequality is not reduced by oligarchical collectivism:

Obviously no government can even pretend to reduce income inequality without severely encroaching on individual liberty. Here’s where Venezuela stands in that regard:

The good news is that we won’t catch up to Zimbabwe without another generation or two of demographic transformation.

There is an alternative path to the road to ruin:

Around the same time that Venezuelans elected Hugo Chávez in 1999, Colombia was embracing a series of economic reforms in partnership with the International Monetary Fund.

Today, Colombia has perhaps South America’s strongest economy despite limited natural resources.

Whether the USA will learn from Colombia’s inspiring example and once again embrace economic liberty remains to be seen. It won’t happen without a fight; oligarchs treasure their power.

  • Appalled By The World

For even more proof of how well “socialism” works, look at Russia. Had 75 years of communism never happened there’s a good chance that Russia would be the world’s mightiest nation just based on its vast wealth of resources. Instead, the Russian economy is still less than robust 25 years after finally ditching Lenin’s great idea. Now we have idiots here trying to replicate the Russian disaster in pretty much all aspects because it obviously worked so well over there.

    Hey,
I might be a little slow, on the uptake, getting it…
but, I’m certainly seeing a much bigger picture, now.
Like experiencing a crippling gut punch, I’m still appalled, outraged and doubled over!!! No one is in charge of this country…
Barry the Bomb, looked completely befuddled, yesterday…
    Like aaaaahhh, uuuhhhmmmm….
Who can even fathom the irresposible, irrational, unreasonable, mindless actions of our shrivelled up, and blown away, frightfull leader!!!
Hey Barry, okay! So you act snarky, like your mentally checked out in private, lying, cheating, stealing, laughing, partying, and mocking us with your insincere toadies and cronies and such!!!…but,
Its a completely different thing to put that crap on display TO US, IN PUBLIC!

Society in every state is a blessing, but government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one; for when we suffer or are exposed to the same miseries by a government, which we might expect in a country without government, our calamity is heightened by reflecting that we furnish the means by which we suffer.” – Thomas Paine, Common Sense 1776

    01.29.15: Lethal Force
The Venezuelan government authorized the use of lethal force to suppress peaceful protests last night in a surprise move that has wide-reaching implications for the country prone to civil unrest. The law has become instantly controversial since it contradicts the Constitution, which strictly forbids the use of firearms by security forces during peaceful protests.

The move came by way of resolution 008610 from the Ministry of Defence, published in the Gaceta Oficial 40.589 of January 27. New laws written into the Venezuelan law books are published in this way periodically. The new law is found in page 418.354 of the document. Gaceta Oficial 40.589 can be found here, in Spanish.

Venezuelan Secret Police Kidnap Award-Winning Freedom Advocate
Members of what was surely the Venezuelan regime’s secret police yesterday kidnapped opposition leader and 2008 Milton Friedman Prize winner Yon Goicoechea from his car after he left his home. Diosdado Cabello, the second most powerful person in the regime, publicly announced that the government had arrested Yon on the bogus claim that he was carrying explosives.

Yon advocates non-violence in the promotion of basic freedoms and democracy.

In the video broadcast on national television, Cabello referred to the $500,000 Friedman Prize award that Yon received as evidence that Yon was some sort of foreign-employed agent bent on terrorism. “That man was trained by the U.S. empire for years,” he said, “It looks like his money ran out and he wants to come here to seek blood. They gave him the order there in the United States.”

This is an old trick of the Chavista regime—distract attention from the severe political, economic and social crisis that it has inflicted on the country. Venezuela’s so-called Socialism of the 21st Century has produced shortages of everything from food and water, to medicine and electricity. Hunger is becoming widespread, the rate of violence is among the worst in the world, and the regime has become extremely unpopular. (We have commented on this downward spiral here, here, here, and here).
