Ted Cruz Takes Courageous Stand on Ethanol Subsidies

How do we know Ted Cruz will stick by his conservative principles? Because it is crucial that he do well in the Iowa Caucuses next month. Yet we read this:

Cruz kicked off his six-day bus tour across Iowa and received questions at his first event about his opposition to the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), an ethanol subsidy that many Iowan farmers depend on.

“I very strongly support corn and farmers and ethanol, but I don’t think Washington should pick winners and losers” Cruz said after a supporter asked him to clarify his stance.

“I think what we need to do, instead of having a government mandated subsidy, we ought to do is remove the government barriers so that ethanol can end up having a larger share of the market through competition rather than through government putting mandates in place,” Cruz added.

Fair enough; if ethanol can compete in the free market then let it.

Cruz will pay a price for this stance:

According to a report from Politico, supporters of the Renewable Fuel Standard are buying newspaper, radio and digital ads to attack Cruz on the issue in Iowa. Another group, Iowa Progress Project, has spent $200,000 airing anti-Cruz ads.

When someone is unmoored from conservative principles, there is no guessing what they will do once in power. For example, in 1932 Franklin Roosevelt ran as the small government candidate against progressive Republican Herbert Hoover, denouncing the George W. Bush of that age for his profligate spending. Once in office, FDR wasted money like a fiend and constructed the infrastructure for the welfare state.

We don’t have to take Cruz’s word for anything. We know what he believes.

The subsidies epitomize waste and corruption.

Maybe it is time the people of Iowa get a message from the rest of us: We hate ethanol. It is driving up both fuel and food prices and we are subsidizing it. Are you farmers to feed the world or grow bad fuel?

I’m a native born, lifelong Iowan and I say good for Ted Cruz! For both ethanol and wind power the numbers just don’t add up. I want to shout at my radio or TV every time those “Pressure the Republican candidates to support ethanol or wind power subsidies” commercials come on.

Ethanol make gas more expensive, rots rubber car components and is not as effective as all the “scientists” say (same guys doing the climate). Get rid of the ethanol requirement.

Ethanol is damaging in small engines – even E10 in an outboard (2 or 4 stroke), mowers, chainsaws, generators etc will absorb large amounts of atmospheric moisture, as the ethanol component is hygroscopic.

Any device that is used intermittently (i.e. any of the above!) will sit for a while and absorb water into the fuel. Accordingly, you will end up with water and ethanol at the bottom of a fuel tank (due to phase separation), and when you next go to start up, what do you think is going to happen? If the bloody thing manages to fire up, it will run very poorly with detonation and engine damage from being too lean.

There have been a number of attempts to make E10 compulsory in all fuels, even premium, in Australia, but fortunately it has not come to fruition as yet.

    Ethanol is evil!

Yeah the farmer that leases all the land around our little two acres has received just shy of $500,000 over the past eight years for growing corn for ethanol. And you know what? Since they started taking the subsidies their thinking and attitudes about all of life have morphed from redneck conservative to welfare queens that think even our little plot is theirs to do with what they want. They used to be nice people whereas now they are bitter, angry men who scream and yell and bully and then pout when they get told the world is not theirs.

Cruz is a used car salesman. Sure, he is less bad than some of the others, but that is not saying much. His non-support of the situation in Oregon shows he still has statist roots. Ethanol subsidies would be a great start to kind of programs that are a waste of money. Come on Ted, grow some balls man.

it destroyed my gas weed whacker, ate all the gaskets. My boat engine will need $500 of repair to degunk it. I pulled the fuel filter and it had a gob of crap the size of your thumb in it. There’s deeper damage that requires a teardown of the fuel system. Wonder-effing-full

in point of fact the total pollution to create and burn a gallon of ethanol vs a gallon of gasoline is WORSE than the gasoline. Consider the vast amount of water wasted to create ethanol.

Ahh, yes Chuck, that is yet another issue – if you have a fibreglass fuel tank, then depending upon the composition, the ethanol will actually eat into the ‘glass, and lodge all of the gunk in the fuel delivery system, i.e. filters, carburettor, or (gasp!) fuel injection system.

Here’s a tip…Grow that corn that people actually eat. If that doesn’t work grow poppies or hemp (in the back 40). Or, maybe Kale, watercress, or whatever hipsters in Chiraq and SF eat. Label it “organic non GMO”, ship it to other sanctuary cities, and you’ve made up your losses from EtOH subsidies 4 or 5 times over.

My cousin once said…”you can take the farmer out of the city, but you can’t take the city out of the farmer.” Zen like, don’t ya think?

I would have liked Cruz to have made a verbal support of the protesters in Oregon. Since he loves to babble about limited government, that would have been better than the statement he made.

Gas pumps across Nebraska have an “enriched with Ethanol” logo on them. I want to take out a sharpie and change “enriched” to “diluted”. It may have a lower price at the pump (we already paid for it), but you won’t go as far on it.

Ethanol has it’s place, but it will never make it as a permanent fuel additive. It wastes to many other resources. Im surprised he said that.

For every dollar invested in ethanol you get 75 cents of energy. Maybe squeeze 80 cents. It is a loser any way you slice it. Depending which products you are making, one dollar invested in oil yields 11 to 17 TIMES of return.
