Unless we see a miraculous display of principle and courage at the Republican convention, the party will be fielding a candidate as profoundly unacceptable as Hillary Clinton. This has sparked renewed interest in the Libertarian Party as an alternative to staying home.
As a protest vote, the Libertarian Party has the advantage of being explicitly devoted to American principles. Unfortunately, it has been a magnet for kooks, one of whom could secure the nomination at the end of the month. His name is Gary Johnson.
During the first hour of the Libertarian Party presidential forum that aired Friday night on the Fox Business Network, leading Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson admitted that in his view, Jewish bakers should be forced by government to bake wedding cakes for Nazis.
The issue arose when fellow Libertarian presidential candidate Austin Petersen brought to the attention of moderator John Stossel that in an earlier debate in Oregon, Johnson declared that bakeries should be forced to bake wedding cakes for gay couples. Johnson affirmed the position, arguing that being able to discriminate on the basis of religion is a “black hole.” Petersen pushed Johnson on the issue and asked whether he felt Jewish bakers should be forced to bake wedding cakes for Nazi customers. Stossel directed the question to Johnson, who replied “that would be my contention, yes.”
A comedian wanting to take anti-libertarianism to the farthest extreme of parody would be likely to arrive at the exact same view as Gary Johnson.
In contrast, an actual advocate of limited government would hold that interactions between businesses and customers must be entered into freely by both sides.
Watch in horror as Johnson advocates his authoritarian conception of “libertarianism”:
If this totalitarian dingbat gets the nomination, maybe we should try the Constitution Party. Eventually conservatives will find a permanent home, either in a Trumpster-free GOP, a de-kookified existing third party, or a new party constructed from scratch.
