New York to Drop Literacy Test for Teachers

You can try to jump higher, but that’s hard. It’s easier to just lower the bar. The moonbattery-addled state of New York continues to embrace decline:

The state Board of Regents will likely vote early next week on whether to ax the Academic Literacy Skills Test, one of four exams that teacher wannabes have to pass for certification, officials said Monday.

The Regents will also consider changes to one of the other three prerequisite exams for would-be educators, the Teacher Performance Assessment, or edTPA.

Under that proposal, applicants who just barely fail the edTPA could still be certified based on other factors, including teacher recommendations.

Under moonbat rule, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.

Sources said the moves will likely be approved, leading to outcry from those who believe they are important assessment tools.

Charles Sahm is director of education policy at the Manhattan Institute. He gasps:

“It’s alarming because we’ve now abandoned or watered down the teacher evaluation process, and now we’re lowering the bar for entry certification as well.”

The counterargument: Oh yeah? Well racism.

Sources said education officials … were concerned about the disparity between passing rates [on the literacy test] among white and minority candidates.

Any objective measure that involves intellectual ability will reflect innate disparities. This is why objective measures must be abolished, along with standards. You can’t pursue excellence or even competence and also pursue equality.

The qualifications for politicians and obviously, Regents, is pretty low, so why not lower it for teachers as well? To paraphrase Mark Twain, first God made idiots, that was for practice, then he made Boards of Regents.

  • Rotohammer

I bet the original standards were not very high. Disparity in the results would be only partly due to differences in intelligence. Culture accounts for the rest. A culture that says we demand to have what you have, but without earning it – the diplomas, the credentials, and the jobs. We don’t need no fancy readin & writin in grade school through college, and ‘sides, our teachers don’t know that stuff anyhows. The circle is complete.

And why, exactly, is the New York Board of Regents not decorating assorted lamp posts?

This is the natural outcome of manufacturing imbeciles whose only real training is in complaining. What else does a Masters in Post Modern Navajo Lesbian Poetry equip you to do?

I’ve known for decades that the public school system has one purpose and one purpose only: to teach students to vote Democrat after they turn 18, and forever after. So therefore, the only qualification a public school teacher needs to have is the ability to teach a student to punch the letter “D” in a voting booth.

    That’s all.

  • Jester

It equips you to vote Democrat.

Thus guaranteeing that home educated students will continue kicking the stuffing out of government “educated” kids in academic contests.

To quote Stevie Wonder from his song, ‘Living for the City’; ” NY, just like I pictured it”
Yeah, but he was blind, just like the Board of Regents. This is the rot that flows down from Cuomo and DiBlasio.

The fact they don’t have drug tests for NY Teachers… Years ago I was friends with a family of teachers, the mother and her son were both middle school teachers in Brooklyn. The son was a raging drug addict who also sold drugs in local dive bars. He would show up for school to “teach” fifth grade gym, stoned and drunk. They would send him home and cover for him. He was a violent sociopath who would blackout and get into fights, end up beaten and bloodied and not know what had happened.

The teachers union and his mother made sure he was protected, as was his $80,000+ bennies – as for the 10-year-olds he “taught” not so much

Tell me again how we don’t need the H-1B visa program.
I teach math at a community college, and the K-12 system is NOT producing future doctors, scientists, engineers, accountants, etc.; they are producing ignorant Democrat voters.

We’ll just put the “D” on the ballots in cursive. They won’t have a clue what it is.

We don’t “need” it. We need better education for our own kids, not more foreign slave labor for the mega-corporations.

Solutions should never involve keeping everyone down.

Based on the fecal flow from the Retardlican controlled Congress, it clearly makes no difference which “side” of the UniParty is in power. They have been in session for two months and they have produced what? That steaming pile of RINOcare?

Not voting Democrat is not a solution. The 5th column Retardlican Progressives are there to advance the Progressive agenda when the Democrats are not in power. That is why, regardless of which “side” of the UniParty “wins”, nothing changes. You are still under attack, this time, the enemy has no close air support(the media) that doesn’t mean they won’t overrun your position.

How do you get a bachelor’s without reading?

“There are four different paths to becoming a licensed teacher in New
York State: (1) the Approved Teacher Education Program Pathway,
involving completion of a New York State registered program (generally, a
recognized bachelor’s degree program with a student teaching
    component), several examinations, and an Institutional Recommendation;
    (2) an Individual Evaluation Pathway, requiring a bachelor’s degree,
required coursework, several examinations, and successful completion of
workshops; (3) Interstate Reciprocity Pathway, which requires a
bachelor’s degree, a valid teaching certificate from another U.S. state,
and several examinations; and (4) the National Board Certification
Pathway, which requires a bachelor’s degree, a National Board for
Professional Teaching Standards Certificate, successfully complete
workshops and required New York state examinations.”
