University of Illinois Blows $60 Million per Year on Diversity

There is a price to be paid for the obsession with advancing “diversity” on college campuses — not just in terms of lower standards and the pandemonium that results (e.g., here, here) when students are there not to learn but to be black, but a direct monetary cost:

The University of Illinois spends more than $60 million on diversity efforts every year, according to a recent independent report commissioned by the university that also noted the public institution has redundant and overlapping diversity expenses that could and should be streamlined.

It gets harder all the time to tell academia apart from its sibling Big Government.

The report claims that “more than $60 million is invested in diversity and inclusion” at UI, with “over 80 percent” being earmarked for scholarships.

That is, students are paid to belong to or to identify as belonging to select special interest groups favored by liberals.

“It was not clear,” the report claims, “how these resources are prioritized for allocation and/or assessed for outcomes.”

Who cares about outcomes? The goal is to feel self-righteous about throwing other people’s money at diversity. Once the money has been wasted, mission accomplished.

What exactly is diversity? No one at UI seems to know.

In their report, the review team also noted that, at the University of Illinois, “there was not a clear, overarching understanding of the definition of diversity.”

This should work: if you can be pigeonholed into a demographic group that votes overwhelmingly for Democrats, you are diverse. But rather than accept this simple definition, the educrats will probably choose to waste still more money on a study to determine what diversity is.

I wonder what all of the real students who don’t attend the “short yellow bus” side of the campus think of all this.

Invest? And the return on the investment is?

Many of the students are libtards from the S**tcago suburbs so they are indoctrinated before they even arrive. For example, the University of Illinois are the fighting Illini – named after a semi local Indian tribe. They had a mascot (Chief Illiniwik sp?) that used to run out on the field and court at halftime. The dance was taught by a local tribe and the suit was built by a tribe. The white kids from the burbs screamed and yelled about how evil the Chief was – now he is gone.

    ….. A politically hygienic campus.

    That’s the agenda!!

the proverbial drunken sailors were NEVER so profligate with spending as it was their own money. Not these insane leeches. There’s no end to the demands for someone else’s money to piss away.

back in the 70’s when I went there, there were 30,000 undergrads of which only a few thousand were STEM majors. Just how many grads in dead languages or the history of the Yucatan do you think there are jobs for?

On a more recent note, one of my nieces went to the now infamous St. Olaf’s in Minnesota, majoring in history. She’s a shift boss at Bubba Gump Shrimp… and typical of 99% of college grads.

I called CU home for 15 years and was present when they murdered The Chief. NO ONE wanted the chief to go except a handful of self righteous ass hats. The NCAA made a ruling that it was “hostile” imagery and all post season appearances would be barred until The Chief was removed.

But hey… i dont pay Illinois state income taxes anymore so i could care less what they do. Then again i am in Texas so i dont pay state income taxes at all muhahaha!

Hey now, it’s not nice to gloat 🙂

So true. My older daughter is studying nursing and getting other certificates (EMT now) along the way. I’m still paying too much for the education due to artificially inflated tuition rates, but at least I don’t feel like the money is being wasted (or worse than wasted).

Yep, people make optimal choices when they spend their own money to purchase goods and services for themselves. They make the least optimal choices when they use other peoples’ money to purchase goods and services for a 3rd party. It’s why ridged central control has and always will fail.

Well, higher graduation rates, a higher percentage of grads landing a job in their field within the first year, higher average income for grads, that kind of thing is what we want.

Right? No? Why is everybody looking at me like I just dropped my pants and defecated in the corner?

    [shudder]

Sorry, just had a flashback to a particularly unpleasant faculty meeting.
