California Pays Absurdly Bloated Salaries as It Goes Broke

Ever wonder how the erstwhile Golden State, with all its massive resources, could find itself hundreds of $billions in debt and staring bankruptcy in the face? Compensation for state workers is one part of the story. Conservative Counterpoint observes that with the help of accrued leave payments, a prison dentist was paid $621,971, a prison psychiatrist $737,057, and prison doctor Jeffrey Rohlfing $784,596 in a single year:

The $784,596 figure includes overtime, bonuses, and other compensation, in addition to salary, but it’s quite a jump from 2004 when Rohlfing earned a mere $132,854. The pay hike is especially surprising since Rohlfing was put on probation for five years in 1997 after being found guilty of unprofessional conduct and impairment due to mental illness.

Standards are not high for government workers, as a peek inside the Oval Office will confirm. For years Rohlfing as been paid lavishly to do little or nothing.

More California salaries:

Then there is the state university system, where accelerating tuition rates cannot keep pace with the educrat gravy train:

State bureaucrats have a blank check to pay each other whatever they think they can get away with. Due to the liberal flakiness of most of the population, they can get away with quite a lot. The result: a tsunami of red ink that promises to wash the whole state away.

No worries. The federal government will find a way to force Texas to bail California out.

“It’s almost as if” libs do what they accused executives of Hostess Brands doing – bloating their paychecks before the place is to go bankrupt. Except of course, that was not the case with Hostess Brands and Hostess Brands is a Private company and not a screwed over taxpayer who has no choice in the matter.

  2. Jimbo says:

I quit helping to pay their salaries 7 years ago when I fled California. The number of idiots per square mile in California is astounding.

  3. rechill says:

Because they are so clever, they became angry that “stupid” blue collar “trash” made a better living and that’s when the wage inflation started. They call it “meritocracy”. Even though they contribute very little other than their devotion to the fundamental transformation of America, into a Marxist gulag, that is. And all this time I thought they abhorred fundamentalists.

  4. Tiger says:

Comrade J, it’s amusing that you think that paying medical professionals hundreds of thousands of dollars a year is somehow on the same level as paying CEOs tens or hundreds of millions while they companies they run get driven into the ground.

  5. Comrade J says:

What is truly amusing Tiger is your need to resort to red herring and lies.

First of all the criticism is not of doctors, but of the gov bureaucrats. I have nothing, but praise for doctors and CEOs, or anyone else who run/work in PRIVATE companies and make a lot of money. If they make a lot of money, it is theirs, not matter how much, if they mismanage, they deserve bankruptcy. Whether they succeed or fail, all transactions are VOLUNTARY. [Please don’t bother ASS-ume I’m defending corrupt thieves CEOs and executives such as for example Commie-O buddy Jon Corzine. Those belong in jail].

These public “servants” on the other hand have a salary that the taxpayer pays for in a MANDATORY/FORCED fashion. And these swine get fat while the rest of CA grows poor, on food out of the CA taxpayers children’s mouths.

Secondly, you need to learn to read more carefully. If you did so, as well as clicked on the link, you would discover that it is not just the “medical professionals”, but academic administration (not even teachers or professors) swine who are growing fat on taxpayer dime.

Thirdly, as I mentioned Hostess Brands execs are accused of bloating their salaries, but in order to remove even a hint of rumors they agreed to salaries of $1 each shortly after some creditors leveled the accusations.

Did the Teamster or Bakers Union bosses do that during the bankruptcy procedures to save money for the common union guy who’s just trying to make a living? [that was a rhetorical question].

It is rather despicable, though somewhat humorous, that you defend thieves and liars by peddling lies yourself.

P.S.: Say Hello to Winnie the Pooh or any other imaginary friends you have in your imaginary coo coo world.

  6. A. Levy says:

Rohlfing was put on probation for five years in 1997 after being found guilty of unprofessional conduct and impairment due to mental illness…”

Mental illness? That should easily qualify him to be governor of Mexifornia!

  7. Comrade J says:

LOL but… but.. Tiger said he was a “medical PROFESSIONAL“. You just hate doctors… and… and children, don’t you Levy? (sarc off)

Maybe Tiger is afflicted by the same condition that Rohlfing is?

  8. Ghost of FA Hayek says:

    Well put Comrade J
It’s simply amazing how libs like Tiger view PRIVATE sector wealth as though they personally have somehow been cheated, yet those who obtain this same wealth by latching onto a teat of the government sow get a pass.
    BTW Tiger
California has (in your own words) been driven into the ground

  9. Joe says:

Yeah, it’s a mental disorder call liberalism.

  10. fubar says:

this might sound like a stupid question, but
do doctors employed by the STATE to treat inmates and such have to pay ridiculous malpractice premiums like those in private practice?
i mean, yeah, they might get sued by the same state that pays their paychecks….

  11. fubar says:

the inmates lawyer’s paid by the same state that pays the offending dr’s paycheck…

  12. Ghost of FA Hayek says:

With all the unfounded bile thrown at private practice physicians by the left, one would assume practicing medicine in prisons would be at the bottom of their list

  13. Comrade J says:

You know gents, I keep getting an impression libtards are economic illiterates. Here is why I say that.

They ASS-ume that ALL money/wealth made in Private sector is dishonest gain. Now you and me will be the first ones to say that there are crooks in private sector. But that is not because the sector is private, but rather because immoral people will do immoral things, no matter if they are in public or private sector.

Anyway back to the point, the libtards generally can not fathom that money can be made in an honest way. Why is it?

Is it because they are illiterate of how economy works? and that VOLUNTARY transactions are foundation of capitalism? they don’t understand how a product is created?

Or is it because they are immoral/crooked inside and think that everyone must be just like them? So it’s ok for them to steel bread from the mouths of taxpayers’ children, “because everyone is doing it”?

    Or perhaps both?

I am also tired of the BS that teachers are ALL somehow more worthy and noble than CEOs. I personally know individuals from BOTH professions that are extremely, smart, hard working and are great individuals and professionals. Just as I know folks in both categories that are … well this is PG-13 blog for the most part.

But to expect the same reward/outcome from both professions is idiotic. It’s like going fishing in a creek and then wondering why one doesn’t end up with a bear hide. Surely, someone is to blame, right? So bear hides must be taken away from bear hunters and given to all fishers, “to right the injustice”.

If there is a generalization to be made, it is that those who feel entitled to other people’s money/things/ success tend to become swine, whether they are poor or rich. And that the current state of public sector breeds this entitlement mentality.

On the other hand, of course, you have business schools that preach moral relativity, and then wonder, ‘why is there an increased corruption in the business world?’

  14. KHarn says:

Remember: California was the state that issued IOUs to the people they contracted and then demanded that they PAY TAXES on those IOUs, saying that those same IOUs would NOT be accepted as payment!

    These are YOUR people, regressives.

    Comrade J

I recall a teacher once telling me (during contract negotiations)he believed everything a student eventually earns is property of those teachers who “gave them the necessary tools”
Any amount of compensation resulting from contract negotiations is but a mere pittance of what he is truly owed by society.
In his mind was a sort of caste system made up of teachers and slaves.

Liberalism appeals to the worst side of human nature, greed and envy.
Look to Greece for the best example in how this all ends.
Basically they are the mirror image of the Democrat base, a helpless entitlement state.
The Greeks demand everyone else(particularly the Germans) work harder to bail them out.
And as soon as they ask for just a little austerity in exchange for this money, Greeks riot in their own streets.
Greece was the be all- end all model of government alone as the economy.
American born and educated Socialist George Papandreou was to show us all how it’s done. But Socialism sews the seeds of it’s own destruction all on it’s own, thank you very much.
Intellectually bankrupt Libs such as Paul Krugman simply incorporated outside bailouts into this model, arguing that what killed Greece is this silly demand that these bailouts be finite (austerity).

Lookout Tx, N.Dka, and AK you all will have your surpluses “redistributed” to Ill, Ca, and NY.

  17. JDavid says:

After all, communism just got a mandate!

  18. Comrade J says:

    @Ghost of FA Hayek

LOL, by that very “logic” everything a teacher earns/does is property of taxpayers who provided the finances/resources.

  19. Catherine says:

Tiger’s dementia is making me sick… any doctor’s in the house that aren’t on a steady drip of Thorazine??? (aka psychotic Cali-fornication doctors) We have been soooo screwed by the government schooled, emo, brain-dead electorate.
