Feds Replace Literature With Leftist Propaganda Tracts in Public Schools

English departments are infamous for their repressively homogenous left-wing ideology. But as it turns out, feeding the crocodile doesn’t guarantee that it will eat you last. Having wrested control of public schools from local authorities, federal bureaucrats are now expunging literature from English classes in favor of statist propaganda:

Controversy is brewing over new Common Core State Standards in English that call on public schools to emphasize the reading of “information text” instead of fictional literature. … [T]is initiative is driven in large part by the desire to promote political propaganda in the classroom. …

Consider that one of the “informational texts” recommended as a replacement for, say, Great Expectations is “Executive Order 13423: Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management.” Students would thus study government propaganda in English class (this Executive Order was issued under President Bush, but it is still propaganda — a political sop to the environmental left, as Stanley Kurtz shows).

Another Common Core’s non-fiction exemplar is an excerpt from a 2009 New Yorker essay by Atul Gawande on health care. This too is propaganda — an effort to show that Obamacare is wise policy.

The Obama Regime is imposing this indoctrination on states by the usual means — bribing us with our own money by yanking on the strings (or rather, chains) attached to federal largess. States must comply if they want a cut of Race to the Top funds.

Yet again we see that federal money is poisonous. Any school that accepts a penny of it has been corrupted.

    Does this surprise anyone???

Our kids are attending government schools. They are taught by government employees (unionized government employees at that). You are forced to pay for those schools whether you have kids attending or not. And because you are not “licensed” as a teacher, your input into school curriculum can be easily dismissed, since, if you were as bright as your kids’ teachers are you would obviously agree with them.

So shut up, you parental dumb dumbs. We will teach your kids exactly what the government thinks they need to know. Now go out and earn me some tax money.

One of the possibly unforeseen side effects of this is that after 12 years of reading nothing but government propaganda, the alumni of these schools will not want to read anything at all once it is not compulsory. The act of translating written words into thought will always be associated with plowing through abstruse, politically correct prose.

Time for states to withdraw from the Department of Education. Just do it; feel the short-term pain. Any municipality in the state that cries foul or racist can have the choice to be signed over, completely, to federal DOE control. No state teachers. No state monies. No state sports. No state accredited diplomas issued. No, no, no.,…. (farfetched? Yep, but got to start somewhere in the thinking department to work towards a viable solution.)
