Flunked for Asserting That Australia Is a Country

In the world of academia, it doesn’t always help to know the right answer. Today’s lesson: 2 + 2 = whatever the instructor says it is, or you flunk.

Ashley Arnold, 27 was taking [a college] course as distance learning for her sociology degree from Southern New Hampshire University, Buzzfeed reports.

She was supposed to compare a social norm in another country with the United States and she chose social media use in Australia.

However the professor failed her outright for the project, saying Ms Arnold did not correctly pick a country to compare the US to and instead chose a continent.

The readily available resources confirming that Australia is both a continent and a country at first failed to persuade the nutty professor.

Ashley Arnold spent $1,000 on the course. At least they refunded her money.

On tips from Varla and R F.

Still BS– she was right and should get credit for the course toward her degree, now she has to take it again.

My bad… she got a free B+, plus a tuition refund, out of the whole thing.

No word on whether the ignoramus ‘professor’ was fired or not ? I like the TV ads showing SNHU delivering degrees to online students, but maybe they need to channel some of that money into a better hiring process.

It’s a sociology degree, maybe this lesson will teach her to focus on something actually useful. Something in the area of STEM perhaps…

Technically the continent of Australia does include another country – Papua New Guinea – as it is a linked landmass separated only by a shallow sea. Sadly, you don’t need knowledge to be a Uni Professor these days.

That’s nothing…nearly every public school in the USA teaches that socialism is a good thing…while the ghosts of the murdered 100s of millions cry out in warning!

    Those commercials are beyond annoying.

  8. SineWaveII says:

But that doesn’t negate the fact that a country called “Australia” exists so the “professor” (a woman by the way) – is still completely wrong and should be fired.

But it’s OK to refer to Africa as if it were a country. I see that one all the time, even though I’m certain there are more than 50 countries on that continent. Plus a coastal island nation or two.

Bet’cha anything he’s one of those shallow thinkers who believes he’s smart….and proves it by telling people haughtily “Africa is NOT a country; it is a CONTINENT!” Then because he has that in his head, and it is correct, he makes the leap and thinks “Wow, you know what? I bet that’s the same thing as with Australia!”

You’re just sure he read somewhere that Africa is a continent, when all this time HE thought it was a country, so he jumped to a stupid conclusion and said, “Damn, they have Australia mixed up, too, just like with Africa!” So he’s undoubtedly jumping to the wrong conclusion and in the process, thinking he is smarter than everyone else, who is “wrong.”

It’s almost always those people who think, when they come up with a “new idea” — whether it is correct or not — that he is now above the “regular people” who “never thought of that.” (Can’t you just hear him saying after a couple of beers, “Bet you didn’t know Africa was a continent, not a country, did ya? And y’know what? So is Australia — same thing!” )

P.S. Nothing worse than a prof who is wrong but is sure he is right, so he marks you down when YOU are the one who is right. Well, there is one thing worse – when students grade each others’ writing — Geez, they don’t know what they’re doing, and they mark your paper up because THEY don’t know the rules well enough to know when they can break ’em. (Had one student say you can’t start a sentence with “because.” Well…Because some students don’t know what they’re doing, they make mistakes grading other students’ papers.)

Sad to have to say but some of us who do score highly on IQ tests, esp verbal could never handle a STEM career. On SAT (way back before scoring changed), I scored high enough on verbal to skip freshman comp and go straight to sophomore….but so low in math that I had to take the remedial class. Know what people like us do? Right…teach.

Old saying that still works….kill your TV.

Wow. I hadn’t realized that college teaching standards were so low. Even I could be a professor (housewife that I am) if general knowledge isn’t a requirement.

  14. Allan says:

There is NO WAY that this person should be a PROFESSOR of anything but an outhouse. How the fuck does anyone become so ignorant? Probably the same way that some Americans believe that Canadians live in Igloos.

  15. ICEvictim says:

so let me guess, a community college?

  16. ICEvictim says:

Liberal Arts professor… and is anyone surprised?? I’m sure she considers herself an intellectual.

when it comes to intellectuals –
“There are some ideas so absurd that only an intellectual could believe them.” – George Orwell
You must be an intellectual. Only an intellectual could say something so stupid. – George Orwell
