Food Stamps for Pets

The Obama Regime excels in one area that is crucial to Democrats’ long-term prospects: expanding the number of government dependents. Particular success has been seen with food stamps, where Obama has increased the number of supplicants from 32 million in 2009 to 48 million in November 2012. But even here, the private sector is out front of sluggish Big Government:

Pet Food Stamps is a New York-based nonprofit that helps pet owners who can’t afford to support their animal friends.

“The Pet Food Stamps program … has been created to fill the void in the United States Food Stamp program which excludes the purchase of pet food and pet supplies. In these rough economic times, many pet owners are forced to abandon their beloved pet to the ASPCA, North Shore Animal League or other animal shelters due to the inability to pay for their basic food supply and care,” the organization’s website explains.

For now the assistance comes from independent retailer PetFoodDirect. But once free pet food comes to be seen as an entitlement, funding will be put on a coercive basis. There’s always more money, so long as the printing presses keep churning.

Stingy Republicans won’t want the government to feed this dog.

Apparently, it is possible for a full-blown leftist to occasionally have a moment of reality.

“I always thought it was the Archie Bunkers of the world, the right-wingers of world, who were more resistant and more closed-minded about hearing the other side,” he said. “In fact, what I have learned is, in a very painful way — and I can open this shirt and show you the scars and the knife wounds — is that it is big media institutions who are identifiably more liberal to left-leaning who will shut you down, stab you and kill you, fire you, if they perceive that you are not telling the story in the way that they want it told…” – Juan Williams

Lucifer says Obama might go along with the Pet Food Stamp Program on the condition that “dogs will be fattened up for eating. Cats will not be covered under the program.”

  3. Eleanor in Hell says:

Franklin, I guarantee that if Fala were here, he’d object to that idea strenuously. 😮

  4. so what says:

This is not a bad thing. It is done by donations only. It actually saves taxpayers money because pet owners having a financial hard time won’t have to surrender their pets to animal control.

    It’s not always about politics.

  5. palolojo says:

We have a similar project in Hampton Roads but they’re smart enough not to call it Pet Food Stamps it’s called Pet Pantry.

  6. SNuss says:

As long as it is financed by PRIVATE funds, and stays that way, I see no problem with it.
Now, if we could just get GOVERNMENT out of the PEOPLE welfare business……

They should send some to Bo!

  10. justme says:

Sorry, this is one program I do not see any downside to.

Normal people take far better care of their pets than themselves. If they are turning to a pet pantry in order to feed them, it is out of necessity. If it is funded with private donations – it is no one’s business.

  11. Anne says:

If it’s private donations only, I’m OK with it. If there is any “gubment” money involved, then NO!!!
I’m a dog lover, personally, I have two rescue dogs. But I’m responsible for them. I wouldn’t expect anyone else to pay for their food. If I fell onto some hard times, got laid off, couldn’t find work, etc…. I still would NOT get rid of my dogs or surrender them to a shelter. I’d get rid of my car, clothes, electronics, etc before I got rid of my dogs.

  12. Dr. 9 says:

Personally, i’d much rather give food stamps to that beautiful puppy, then to some 400 lb., lazy, rusty-assed parasite who sits on a couch all day waiting for the next check.

  15. Son of Taz says:

Alright Dave, now you’ve done it. I tried to view the website for the pet food stamps and it had crashed.

On the surface, this may seem like a good idea, funded with private donations. I’d be in favor of that, but not if this organization obtains 503(c)(3) status. That means the beloved IRS has granted them tax exempt status so every donation becomes a write-off. I have dogs, but it’s because I can afford them, not because they qualify as a deduction.

  16. Beautiful Kryzhakstan says:

Vote for tax hikes and more spending or the dog gets it.

  17. SNuss says:

@ Son of Taz: Some people regard their pets as family. Just because they fall upon Democrat and RINO- created hard times, I find it comforting to know that their furry family member won’t be kicked to the curb, or sent to die in a government animal shelter.

BTW, they don’t give out “food stamps”, they deliver actual pet food to the needy.

Anonymous writes: This morning I went to The Benefits Office to sign my dogs up for welfare.

At first the lady said, “Dogs are not eligible to draw welfare.”

So I explained to her that my dogs are mixed in colour, unemployed, lazy, can’t speak
English and have no clue who their Dads are. They expect me to feed them, provide
them with housing and medical care.

So she looked in her policy book to see what it takes to qualify.

My dogs get their first cheques next Friday.
