Nanny Bloomberg Cracks Down on Soda

Under NYC’s Mayor for Life Michael Bloomberg, the liberal compulsion to dictate every picayune aspect of our lives has reached the point of self-parody:

New York City plans to enact a far-reaching ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts, in the most ambitious effort yet by the Bloomberg administration to combat rising obesity.

The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March.

If petty tyrants like Bloomberg can tell you how much you can weigh and how large a cup of soda you can drink, do you have any personal liberty whatsoever? Is there any intrusion into your personal business sanctimonious thugs won’t feel entitled to inflict?

The answer to both questions is no, as confirmed by Bloomberg’s characteristically snide and arrogant response to critics.

“Your argument, I guess, could be that it’s a little less convenient to have to carry two 16-ounce drinks to your seat in the movie theater rather than one 32 ounce,” Mr. Bloomberg said in a sarcastic tone. “I don’t think you can make the case that we’re taking things away.”

It’s almost as if Bloomberg doesn’t understand the obvious question, “By what right?”

He also said he foresaw no adverse effect on local businesses, and he suggested that restaurants could simply charge more for smaller drinks if their sales were to drop.

Charging more is a sure fix for declining sales.

Mayor Mike has taken this jihad to such an extreme that he even tried to restrict the use of food stamps to buy soda. But the federal government shot him down on that.

Who died and made this jerk dictator?

Well New York, you voted for this a$$ biscuit. Now live with it. (although the state seems to have misplaced over three million of its citizens, and most of them came from NYC, so there does seem to be hope for some)

  2. StrangernFiction says:

Liberals are totalitarians. In other words they are the enemy.

“Your argument, I guess, could be that it’s a little less convenient to have to carry two 16-ounce drinks to your seat in the movie theater rather than one 32 ounce…”

Just more garbage for the city to ship out to other states… (Take note of where the NIMBY’s are.)

  4. JNN says:

Is life so perfect in NYC that this is all he has to worry about?

  5. justme says:

I didn’t vote for him. I curse him daily. My Jewish friend always says that “it’s Jews like Bloomberg that make certain another holocaust will happen.”

He grew up as a nasty, arrogant, whining Jew in middle class Irish Catholic Boston. One can only imagine the beatings he was gives as a kid, surely well deserved. Boston Irish aren’t known for their tolerance.

Goldman Sachs (the Giant squid on the face of humanity) paid him $10 Million to leave because they couldn’t stand him. He now governs by fiat, allowing his lunatic underlings to do as they want because he is “bored” with being mayor. He allows the unions to rob at will, for a “businessman” he has made some of the worst financial decisions a city could make allowing union costs and pensions to skyrocket exponentially. He allows and covers for an increasingly corrupt police force who routinely abuses people of all races, not a week goes by that a story doesn’t appear about new police corruption including cops that are members of gangs, bank robbers, drug addicts, caught planting evidence, framing innocent men, lying, raping, beating, running guns, running drugs, selling confidential info to drug dealers….

Let’s not even get into the billions he has allowed to be looted for his pet projects and gifts to his fellow billionaires like the Steinbrenner Family, Wilpons, Silversteins and countless other “developers.” I am subsidizing a multimillionaire former drug dealer, a crooked developer and a Billionaire Russian Oligarch to “develop” the Atlantic Yards…

No, I DID NOT VOTE FOR THE QUEEN MAYOR. I do pray that he suffers a terrible lingering death commensurate with every dollar he is worth.

  6. Mont says:

Bloomberg is an asshole for sure but I agree that food stamps shouldn’t be allowed to purchase soda. Food stamps should only be allowed for purchase of staples.

  7. Judge Napolitano was just saying on Fox that this will NEVER see the light of day- it’s so blatantly unconstitutional the beverage industry will file and get an Federal injuntion the very day it’s passed

  8. Jimbo says:

My first thought is, why would ANYONE want to live in that little dictator’s ‘domain’? I was asked a few years back if I would be willing to relocated to NYC (our corporate headquarters is there) and I indicated I wasn’t even willing to think about it. So what did they do? Exiled me to Hawaii on a 10-year project. Try taking a huge sugary big-gulp from a big kahuna around here you’re liable to get whomped upon badly.

  9. Conan says:

NYC is getting exactly what they deserve AS ARE NY’ers who continue to send dirtbags like Levin and Schumer to the Senate!

We’d better fence of NY before more liberals flee the gulag there and poison the rest of the USA with their liberalism.

  10. Sam says:

Even more galling is how this piece of shit maneuvered to get the mayoral term limit law rescinded.

Giuliani, if your recall, was term limited after 2001. Even with a catastrophic and tragic event like 9/11, he didn’t use it as an excuse to stay in office.

  11. Joe says:

Don’t they have a city council or some other legislative branch that has to debate and vote on these kinds of things? Can he just impose his will whenever he wants? What a damn sewer full of rats.

  12. StanInTexas says:

For those of you thinking that NYC deserves what they get from this clown (THEY DO), also keep in mind that Bloomberg also supports a NATIONWIDE campaign to ban guns.

What happens in NYC rarely stays in NYC!

  13. Louisiana Steve says:

Can’t supersize that soft drink in NY?? Order two medium drinks. It will cost more, but what the heck…in NY everything costs more.

  14. coal power says:

I was leaving work on Sunday(the east side of THAT is of no concern to New Yorkers, it’s only their safety. The nanny has spoken and will spend millions of their tax dollars on ridiculous bullshit. Bloombag is no more a republican than I am an Eskimo

  15. Sam says:

Or…Bloomberg is a Republican like Liz Warren is a Cherokee.

  16. ant says:

So, to libtards, large sodas are like big government, people order it without being smart enough to know they’ve asked for too much, and once they’ve had their fill, they’re reluctant to just ‘get rid of it’.

  17. whotothewhat says:

So why doesn’t Lord Bloomberg just build a castle wall around New York.

  18. Louisiana Steve says:

Just think of all the greenhouse gases will be prevented with less burping, thus saving the environment, preventing global warming, and just plain better manners.

  19. Zilla says:

This is just a scam to double tax the already over-taxed people of NYC that happens to also be more of the dickweed’s totalitarian foodnazism. If you have to buy two small drinks instead of one large one, you will be paying tax (and deposit on applicable containers) TWICE for the same amount of liquid.
He should have been deposed due to the term limits that the people voted TWICE to enforce which he tyrannically ignored anyway in the last mayoral election cycle.
And yes, having to buy two containers instead of one will also make more trash, where are all the envirojackals NOW?
What really sucks about Nanny Bloomy’s bad ideas is that shortly after NYC accepts such tyranny, the rest of the state tends to follow, that’s why you cannot have a smoke with you beer in any bars in upstate NY anymore, because the rest of the state likes to follow NYC over the freaking cliff.
BTW, since they made cigarettes cost over ten dollars a pack here (and that’s the lowest, in The City it’s closer to $15 a pack), New York State lost an assload of tax revenue that they used to get from tobacco sales, leaving gaping holes in it’s already messed up budget. Way to go dictator dicks! Most people didn’t quit either, they just started rolling their own or buying elsewhere.

  20. Chris says:

This will help the local economy. Right?

  23. Geoada says:

There’s only one fat that needs to be removed from New York City and that is the fat between Bloombergs ears. I guess it is true that you get what you vote for.

  24. joeh says:

I heard a lady on Levin last night about Doomberg possibly suffering from Alzheimers disease. That is a very clear possibiity.

  25. Vic Kelley says:

You have to take this crap seriously even though it’s foolish. When others think they know what’s best for you and have the authority to make decisions that limit your choices then you’re screwed. Mr. Bloomberg’s smart-ass remark about having to order 2 smaller drinks just shows his contempt for the people he rules he does not respect them.

  26. SNuss says:

So, what is the SodaNazi’s next step? Mandating portion sizes at restaurants, based on your body mass index?

  27. Judith M. says:

    No soda for you!

  28. czuch says:

But you can still order Cinnabon and dunkin Donuts??
Must not have gotten the “payment” from Coke.
Home Economics was a GREAT class. I got laughed at because I took it. Then I mentioned ya got to eat and the next semester there were more boys than girls.
I’ve always appreciated the things we learned in that class. Theres a bunch of things we need to bring back.
    2012/2013,,,,,,maybe sooner

  29. Lauran says:

Michael SSS Bloomberg is paid $1.00 per year. I would say the citizens of New York are getting what they paid for.

  30. TED says:

ONLY the people of NYC deserve that idiot! You reap what you sow NY!! Of course that open sewer probably likes him.
