Hey everyone, would you be down with an experiment where you got free money, every month, no strings attached?

    They were.

But where does the money come from?

Governments and think-tanks around the world are increasingly fascinated by the idea of a universal basic income, where citizens are given cash to spend as they want.

In Marica, a seaside town of about 150,000 people near Rio de Janeiro, the left-wing municipal government has spent the last year finding out how it works.

“We are a laboratory for the Brazilian left,” says Washington Quaqua, who introduced the experiment as mayor in December 2015 before stepping down. He was replaced by another candidate from the leftist Workers’ Party, Fabiano Horta.

The idea of a universal basic income isn’t new, but long-considered as a potential tool for social equality and redistribution of wealth.

Oh, that’s where the money comes from. Taken from those who earned it & own it, given to those who didn’t earn it & don’t deserve it. For votes. Just like government aid programs here, only one or more steps crazier.

SHHH don’t tell anyone.. the NYT says it’s a SECRET!

Russia has secretly deployed a new cruise missile that American officials say violates a landmark arms control treaty, posing a major test for President Trump as his administration is facing a crisis over its ties to Moscow.

Hey Jerry, you can cover it yourself with the cash you save when you stop paying taxes to the feds, the extra income you get by becoming a sanctuary state (snerk), and when you pull away from the USA you won’t have those pesky feds to hinder you. You can do it…I gotta get back to Texas.

  12. Auburn Rapunzel says:

The good news is, now they’re revealing just how partisan and incompetent they really are.

It makes you wonder how many people in Washington knew about it–and whether that man with “crazy ideas” who ran for president a couple of times might have had it in the back of his mind when he talked about getting rid of them.

  13. Auburn Rapunzel says:

After all, aren’t they always yapping about how they pay more money in taxes than they receive back in funding and it doesn’t even bother them because they can still fill their empty swimming pools with cash for their lavish parties?

Should be a breeze for them to fix their problems.

  15. Bodhisattva says:

Over the past three decades, the environmental movement has increasingly hitched its wagon to exactly one star as the overwhelming focus of the cause, namely “climate change.” Sure, issues of bona fide pollution like smog and untreated sewage are still out there a little, but they are largely under control and don’t really stir the emotions much any more. If you want fundraising in the billions rather than the thousands, you need a good end-of-days, sin-and-redemption scare. Human-caused global warming is your answer!

Even as this scare has advanced, a few lonely voices have warned that the radical environmentalists were taking the movement out onto a precarious limb. Isn’t there a problem that there’s no real evidence of impending climate disaster?

  16. Bodhisattva says:

The fake news Huffington Post says sea level at New York will rise six feet this century and they will have more heat waves.

(Well to be honest they say it COULD rise UP TO six feet. Notice how they give themselves an out because they know that their dire prediction will NEVER come true.)

Apparently this panel of scientific experts didn’t look at any actual data. Over the past six years, sea level at both New York and Boston has fallen about two inches.

Nationally, the percent of hot days has also plummeted.

SEE TOP/FIRST LINK FOR GRAPHICS and more! You don’t have to click on the Huff & Puff Post, they don’t need the traffic. Go there only if you must.

  17. Bodhisattva says:

Nothing about climate science reeks more of confirmation bias, than the changes scientists make to their own data sets over time. They all show exactly the same pattern of monotonically cooling the past and warming the present, regardless of the instrumentation.

Well, then again, if one takes the long view, California, or at least the western bits of it, are headed for Alaska… if current trends continue. Not sure what the ETA is, how many millions of years, but it’s GOING TO HAPPEN if someone doesn’t do something to stop it.

  23. Mr. Freemarket says:

The New York Times dropped the bombshell report citing four current and former American officials who said that other members of Trump’s campaign had multiple interactions with senior Russian intelligence officials.

“American law enforcement and intelligence agencies intercepted the communications around the same time that they were discovering evidence that Russia was trying to disrupt the presidential election by hacking into the Democratic National Committee, three of the officials said. The intelligence agencies then sought to learn whether the Trump campaign was colluding with the Russians on the hacking or other efforts to influence the election.”

Still no word on Hillary’s missing emails….

  24. Mr. Freemarket says:

“And the latest business targeted with anti-Trump protests is — Wegmans.

The grocery store chain drew ire from the National Organization for Women because its 10 Virginia stores stock Trump Winery products, the Washington Post reported.

According to the Washington Post, Wegmans carries 237 Virginia wines from 58 different wineries at its local establishments, including five different wines from Trump Winery. And it’s those products that caused about 300 members of Prince William County’s National Organization for Women chapter to make plans to boycott the store until the wines are removed.”

This is what acceptance and diversity is all about….accepting those who have differing opinions and background than you have…..unless, of course, you are a republican….
Then we will boycott you until you become less diverse in your product offerings.

  25. Bodhisattva says:

There was already an attempt to blame major earthquakes on climate change.

And get this… in a completely unrelated event, there was (supposedly) evidence that the Himalaya Mountains combined with the monsoons in that region results in deluge, which percolates down and lubricates the faults, allowing them to slip and thus there’s a link between rainfall (climate) and earthquakes. Of course this link existed before humans existed and so is not “caused” by humans.

There is still no REAL evidence of any measurable human influence on long term/global climate. Naturally, like any organism and even rocks (which do interact with their environment chemically) we do have an influence on things – by necessity. We cannot live without converting oxygen to carbon dioxide and without eating/drinking, etc.

  26. Mr. Freemarket says:

“According to Politico, the healthcare insurer Humana will completely withdraw from the Affordable Care Act exchange program in 2018, leaving a sizable dent in the Obamacare market.

This would make Humana the first major health insurance company to walk away from Obamacare. The company states that it has come to this decision due to the fact that it stands to lose $45 million in 2017 on Obamcare business.”

At the end of the day, insurers have to make money.

  27. Bodhisattva says:

Death spiral for obamacare – and perhaps it’s best to let it die on it’s own so it can’t be blamed on Trump/Republicans, even though that will happen anyway.

Aetna Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mark Bertolini escalated his criticism of the Affordable Care Act, saying Obamacare’s markets are nearing failure as premiums climb and healthier individuals drop out.

“It is in a death spiral,” Bertolini said in a video interview with the Wall Street Journal that aired Wednesday on the newspaper’s website. He predicted that more insurers will drop out of the market for 2018, following Humana Inc.’s decision to quit Obamacare entirely for next year.

Aetna, too, is mulling whether to further reduce its presence in the markets set up by the ACA. The company cut its footprint to four states for this year, from 15, after losing about $450 million on sales of ACA plans last year.

Bertolini has been saying for months that the ACA’s markets are deteriorating. In October, he said that rising rates would push healthy people away from Obamacare, leaving insurers with sicker customers, and forcing premiums even higher. The increasing burden of medical costs as fewer and fewer healthy customers enroll are among the conditions that create an insurance death spiral.

Well perhaps you should have stayed in your country instead of trying to illegally invade ours? There is a simple solution – GO HOME!

U.S.-bound Cubans stranded in Mexico say they are victims of extortion and more

For some of the U.S.-bound Cuban migrants who are now at the Siglo XXI detention center in the far southwest Mexican city of Tapachula — and their relatives in the United States — a journey once filled with hope is now overflowing with anguish.

“For weeks, we have been getting calls from somebody demanding money if we want to see our family members again,” said the mother of one of the stranded Cubans who asked not to be identified for fear of retribution against her son.

The woman, who lives in Miami, recounted how half an hour after receiving a call from her son from the detention center, the telephone rang again and again from different numbers in Mexico.

The voice on the other side of the device identified himself only as a lawyer by the name of Padilla.

“He tried to find out the names of our relatives and told us that he could help us get them out of there for a sum of money,” said the Miami mother.

Yuniel, a Cuban migrant also stranded in Tapachula near the border with Guatemala but not in detention, blamed the calls on agents who work for the National Institute of Migration (INM).

“We all know that migration officials have some way of getting the numbers called to the United States. Somehow, they find out the numbers and then take advantage to extort the family,” he alleged.

The telephones at the Siglo XXI used for international calls are public so it is unclear how numbers dialed can be extracted. But at least three relatives of different migrants interviewed said they had received similar calls in which alleged officials asked them for money in exchange for their relatives’ freedom. None of the three agreed to pay and the exchange did not go long enough to discuss specific dollar figures.

“We are afraid of what could happen to them; they are in the hands of mobsters,” said the Miami mother. “Last week, three Cubans disappeared from the same detention center. Nobody knows what happened to them.”

It’s already been eight years since the Great Recession, yet the U.S. economy has been just inching along, with its productivity flagging and millions being locked out of the labor market.

One critical underlying factor for this lack of economic dynamism has been the startling decline of America’s economic freedom, an unfortunate legacy of Barack Obama’s eight-year presidency.

The Heritage Foundation’s 2017 Index of Economic Freedom—an annual global study that compares countries’ entrepreneurial environments—highlights the urgent need for the U.S. to change course. For the ninth time since 2008, America has lost ground.

At Long Last, TWO LOSERS are Finally Leaving the Country Over Donald Trump

They’re packing up and shipping out, but Jeff Yeager and his wife Denise, who live in Maryland, don’t exactly know where they’re going. They just know they want to get as far away as possible from President Donald Trump.

Although a number of celebrities threatened to move to Canada or go overseas after the election, not a single one has yet to pick up and leave. Heck, Canada didn’t even want Lena Dunham, though the actress has routinely threatened to make her home north of the border.

But for the Yeagers, apparently, the time has come. At long last, someone is making good on their promise to leave if Donald Trump was elected. “When the devastation of the election hit,” Yeager told the Washington Post, “we thought, ‘Let’s just leave and travel, travel, travel and see where it takes us.’ ”

Flush with cash and privilege, the two will visit several countries before deciding where they want to settle permanently. The couple doesn’t have children. Denise is a community college professor, and Jeff alternately runs a non-profit and travels the country on a bicycle, speaking about cheap travel, so they can go anywhere.

They’re hoping that the places they visit are better than the United States, since they’ll be living there for four to eight years. But for now they say the only way to survive without permanently migrating anywhere is to stay in hostels and crash on couches—something that probably won’t seem as romantic after a few months on the road.

They aren’t giving up their American passports, however.

Unfortunately for the Yeagers, the expatriate life isn’t all its cracked up to be. According to Canadian immigration services, you have to live in the country at least two years and possess a skill Canadians don’t have to be useful enough for permanent residency.

In order to live permanently in Ireland, where the Yeagers hope to land first, you have to either have a job lined up or be able to prove you won’t be a burden on the state. Central America, their other destination, is currently dealing with a crisis of people leaving, so that may be a better option.

    That’s how these organizations go.

  39. Bodhisattva says:

Apparently that’s not their message. They seem to be planning to travel to countries that are overwhelmingly white. I am not quite sure exactly why – aversion to “people of color” perhaps?

  40. Auburn Rapunzel says:

Well, as fond as their sort is of it, maybe they should just ignore the other nations’ immigration laws and move anyway.

  41. Auburn Rapunzel says:

I didn’t mean it’s good. I just mean it’s going to be a thing that happens. Not good, but not surprising.

  42. Mr. Freemarket says:

You are giving away state secrets.

  43. Bodhisattva says:

I haven’t seen any science on this yet, so I’m presenting it primarily to show that, rather than present it as a new energy source that will make us rich, liberal moonbats present it as doomsday:

A massive lake of molten carbon the size of Mexico is discovered under the US, and it could cause climate CHAOS

Situated under western US, 217 miles (350km) beneath the Earth’s surface
Scientists used world’s largest array of seismic sensors to map area
Melting carbon covers an area of 700,000 sq miles (1.8 million sq km)
Upper mantle could contain up to 100 trillion metric tonnes of melted carbon
Its discovery challenges what researchers have assumed about how much carbon is trapped inside the planet

Keep in mind the claims are ESTIMATES and are PRELIMINARY, basically GUESSES, not things that have been PROVEN or MEASURED.
