Despite attempts to attribute the gains to Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane related claims in New Jersey were offset by declines in claims in New York, also hit by Sandy. The highest numbers of new filings came from Pennsylvania and Ohio, where there were thousands of layoffs in the construction, manufacturing, and automobile industries. Hey, they voted for Obama – they got what they deserved!

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) confirmed Thursday that she will seek the chairmanship of the Senate Budget Committee next year but told The Hill that she cannot commit to doing a budget.

This opens up the possibility that Senate Democrats will avoiding passing a budget resolution for the fourth year in a row.

    Did Jesus save Klingons too?

From a workshop on whether Jesus’ salvation would apply to aliens to determining the color of the feathers on a 150-million-year-old creature deemed the Earth’s first bird, the Pentagon has spent money on some questionable projects, according to Sen. Tom Coburn.
At a time when many argue the Defense Department cannot afford new spending cuts, Mr. Coburn, Congress’s top waste-watcher, released a report Thursday arguing that in fact the Pentagon is awash in billions of dollars of non-security spending that should be cut.

Among the more curious spending was:
    • $300,000 spent by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research to fund Brown University’s research into archaeopteryx, the 150-million-year-old early bird, in which the researchers determined the creature likely had black feathers.
    • an Office of Naval Research research project that helped spawn Caffeine Zone 2, an iPhone application that tells people how to schedule their coffee breaks.
    • $1.5 million to develop a special new roll-up beef jerky, which Mr. Coburn said was funded by taking money out of a weapons program.
    • $100,000 for a 2011 workshop on interstellar space travel that included a session entitled “Did Jesus die for Klingons too?” The session probed how Christian theology would apply in the event of the discovery of aliens.
But Mr. Coburn said the problems went beyond bad program funding choices.
He said the military now has more generals and admirals per troop than it did at the height of the Cold War. He recommended cutting 200 generals and admirals, which he said would also cut 800 support personnel, for a savings of $800 million over the next decade.
Great, save $800 million out of how many trillion?

While I agree military cuts should be made, in the proper areas and amounts, it won’t solve the looming entitlement problem.

  18. TrickleUpPolitics says:

I’m sure you all remember the PhD troll who called us all idiots, especially me, for doubting Darwinism? I may not be the best at stating a coherent argument for God made the Earth and everything upon it, but I read an interesting book review in the National Review yesterday. The book is called “Mind and Cosmos: Why the Materialist Neo-Darwinian Conception of Nature is Almost Certainly False” by Thomas Nagel. Nagel says:

I would like to defend the untutored reaction of incredulity to the reductionist neo-Darwinian account of the origin and evolution of life. It is prima facie impossible that life as we know it is the result of a sequence of physical accidents together with the mechanism of natural selection.

The reviewer says “IT was the great Alfred North Whitehead who noted that scientific reasoning itself must be premised on the presupposition that mental functionings are not completely explained or determined by natural processes, because otherwise we would have no warrant for believing that they are true. Whitehead added an ethical argument equally apparent to Nagel: What reason could naturalistic skeptics such as Hume of Huxley of Dawkins or Dennett give for any moral views they held “apart from their own psychological inheritance from the Platonic religious tradition?” Nagel agrees with Whitehead and C.S. Lewis that “the application of evolutionary theory to the understanding of our own cognitive capacities” undermines “our confidence in them”, a lethal self-contradiction.

Reviewer” Nagel’s book is a kind of calmly ticking demolition device that repeatedly detonates Darwinian, scientistic shibboleths and cliches: “The priority given to evolutionary naturalism in the face of its implausible conclusions about other subjects is due to the secular consensus that this is the only form of external understanding of ourselves that provides an alternative to theism”. Anything but God.

I note that, because in part I often delay my posts to give others a chance, among other things, I was not the first to link that article, or others. Not sure if it got it’s own thread or not – think it might have, but unlike our troll I’m not so obsessed that I keep an index of all that goes on here at MOONBATTERY.

I don’t want to get into a lengthy discussion, and certainly am in no mood to argue, about the various merits or pitfalls regarding theories of creation, evolution or intelligent design.

Let me just say there was an excellent lecture at UCSD which brilliantly explained how an intelligent designer could use evolution to create everything we see today – in other words, the three theories are mutually supportive, not mutually exclusive, as long as you have an open mind and are capable of critical thinking.

I don’t see any point in getting bogged down in “my theory is better than yours, despite it’s obvious shortcomings” in support or defense of any explanation of how we got here. I think that, between the Bible and what we can see all around us, the answer is pretty much obvious and it’s more important to enjoy and share what we have than to waste time bickering about how it, and we, got here.

  21. Bob Roberts says:

I see that AC and Bill T (on another thread about Obama and his most recent support of excessive taxation/regulation… oops, I mean GLOBAL WARMING) have already noted that they’ve managed to shut down Hostess and kill the twinkie and other caloric creations. The Obama plan to swell his ranks of his own personal army by killing jobs and forcing people to become dependent on him and the Democrats gains another 18,500 victim recruits even as our food choices are reduced once again. Not that I will miss any Hostess products – I can’t remember when the last time I ate one was, certainly it’s been at least a decade if not two. But they were loved by many and will be missed and that’s just wrong.

  22. TrickleUpPolitics says:

Well, Bob, I don’t see it as bickering when the Word of God outranks a compromise between two mutually exclusive positions. So, instead of criticizing me and those who like Nagel are attempting to refute nonsense adorned with “scientistic” cover, you should try reading the Bible. I for one will not be explaining to God on Judgment Day why I felt it was necessary to depart from his word to avoid “bickering” with my neighbors.

Looks like a lunatic lib drew that cartoon. Nobody is running to/over the border due to the election results – rather we would like to send the moonbat lunatic liberals there. If we were to form our own nation – and understand I think that would still be a bad idea at this point, despite the election and the outlook – we would certainly have to consider some method of purging the rot (and no, I’m not talking about rounding them up and shooting them, not saying we put them in reeducation camps – those are moonbat solutions – but some form of deportation might suffice) and you can imagine that would be used and abused by moonbats to paint us in a very negative light.

The six contradictions of socialism in the United States of America:

America is capitalist and greedy – yet half of the population is subsidized.
Half of the population is subsidized – yet they think they are victims.
They think they are victims – yet their representatives run the government.
Their representatives run the government – yet the poor keep getting poorer.
The poor keep getting poorer – yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about.
They have things that people in other countries only dream about – yet they want America to be more like those other countries.

  26. Bob Roberts says:

You know, it’s a bit late, because time has for the most part solved the problem, but I finally figured out the answer to the musical question, “How do you fix a problem like a Kennedy”?

The answer came from the Kennedy family itself:

Joseph Kennedy’s daughter, Rosemary, was considered shy and mentally limited, symptoms of what many thought was dyslexia. For years the family dealt with the problem by sending her away to special schools and convents. By age twenty-one she had her condition had deteriorated, giving way to tantrums, rages and violent behavior. Rosemary was beginning to understand that she would never measure up to her parent’s expectations, and the resulting frustration led to physical fights and, worse, she often disappeared at night when she would be wandering the streets.

Rosemary was seen as a liability to the family’s political ambitions, and in 1942, Joseph Kennedy moved to deal with the problem. He arranged for his oldest daughter to have a prefrontal lobotomy.

Rosemary’s fate and how it was handled was the ultimate Kennedy deception. As late as 1958 the family was maintaining the fiction that Rosemary had become a nun in Wisconsin.

So, people, if any other Kennedy tries to seek political office, you know what needs to be done. Follow the lead of Joe Kennedy and resolve it.

  27. Bob Roberts says:

The fact lobotomy works on the Kennedy clan was also proven by the case of Ted Kennedy.

He gave himself a liquid lobotomy.

He was rumored to have often mumbled, “Is that a frontal lobotomy or a bottle in front of me?”

  28. Bob Roberts says:

Maybe if “Stretch” Pelosi bothered to ever read it she would know what was in it?

House Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) holds her regular weekly press briefing and displays a disturbing lack of knowledge of the constitution she has sworn for decades to protect and defend.

  29. Bob Roberts says:

Guess who’s still on the hook for the bill from the Community Reinvestment Act and Obama’s legal assistance to ACORN that gave it teeth?

The Federal Housing Administration said mounting losses from defaults on loans it backed during the housing bubble left its insurance fund with a $16.3 billion deficit for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30.
A report by an independent actuary that will be released today sets the table for a possible taxpayer subsidy for the government mortgage insurer. It shows that the fund’s assets aren’t enough to cover projected losses on the $1.1 trillion portfolio of mortgages the agency insures.

Time to shut it down. This is a prime example of socialists interfering with capitalism then blaming capitalism when their socialist meddling fails.

  30. Bob Roberts says:

Ironically, if you go to that intersection RIGHT NOW on GOOGLE EARTH, you will find they captured an image of a truck pulling a similar trailer that is sitting astride the tracks just as was the case when this tragedy occurred.

  31. Bob Roberts says:

Surprised one of you didn’t beat me to this one:

A Longview woman who was walking at Lake Sacajawea with her 6-year-old son pulled a gun on a man who exposed his genitals to her Wednesday evening, according to police.

The 35-year-old woman was near Martin Dock around 8:10 p.m. when the man approached her “aggressively,” sat down and began performing a sex act, then suggested she should watch him, according to the woman and accounts from police.

“I put the magazine in my gun. I cocked it,” the woman said in an interview Thursday night. “I said, ‘You need to leave or Ill shoot you. I’m going to blow your brains out.’ ”

“Oh, [expletive]!” the man declared, before running away.

  36. Tchhht!!! says:

One problem with liberals, I think, is that down deep they don’t feel that they fit into society. This is why they keep trying to change it. The joke is on them, however, because even if they get all the changes they demand, they still won’t feel that they fit in. In short, they’re nuts. Oh hell, everybody already knew that.

  37. Beef says:

Clinton/Warren 2016 is the inevitable result of the century-long process set in motion by the pasage of the 19th ammendment. Women were 53% of the electorate in 2012, and I imagine the trend of white men thinking they have no one to vote for will continue. The only question, in the tribal politics of New America, is whether the Hispanics get a turn first or it’s time to go to female Presidents from here on out.

In considering the effectiveness of the “War on Women” strategy, there may never be a white male President again. There hasn’t been a white male Secretary of State appointed since Warren Christopher in 1993. More and more cabinet postions are being reseved for “diverse” applicants. Don’t think for minute that a ticket of two ethically challenged, marginally qualified women with poor past job performance records couldn’t get 330 electoral votes, with about 53% of the popular vote.

Today’s farce is tomorrow’s tragedy. At least that’s how it’s been going for the past couple of decades.

  38. Ummah Gummah says:

Warren Christopher may be white but I’m in no way sure he’s male.

  39. Beef says:

Warren was marginal on both counts.

So since it’s apparent nobody can seem to recall who it was that deliberately misled us, which means, since the buck stops at the top, it’s Obama’s responsibility, unless we are to believe he’s so incompetent he hires people who can’t remember what they did on critical issues or won’t admit it when they make mistakes.

He was probably behind it anyway, he probably micromanaged it.

You make a great point, which is true, and I’ll expand on it slightly:

Moonbats sense the defect(s) we know is/are a major component of their personality.

Yes, their answer is not to change/improve themselves but rather to demand that society change to accommodate them but, as we know, since the problem isn’t with society, no amount of societal change will be enough.

You made this point well in a brief fashion, I just felt it needed a bit of further explanation, a little expansion.
