A Washington state homeowner on Thursday shot and killed two people who may have been trying to steal marijuana from a large pot-growing operation at the home, a sheriff’s official said. The shooting happened at a house in the Summit area of rural Pierce County, about 10 miles southeast of Tacoma. Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said the homeowner and the intruders both had weapons and got into a shootout. The shooting happened on the same day that a new law went into effect took effect in Washington decriminalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana. It is still a federal crime to grow or sell marijuana.

Pot may be legal, but workers may want to check with their boss first before they grab the pipe or joint during off hours.

Businesses in Washington state, where the drug is legal, and Colorado, where it will be by January, are trying to figure out how to deal with employees who use it on their own time and then fail a drug test.

Judge rejects bid to block Washington state “stoned driving” rules

A judge on Friday rejected a request by a medical marijuana user to block Washington state from enforcing tougher “stoned driving” rules after it became one of the first U.S. states to legalize the recreational use of marijuana.

Washington state voters last month approved marijuana legalization by a margin of 56 percent to 44 percent, making the state, along with Colorado, the first in the country to legalize recreational pot use.

There’s a difference between “decriminalization”, which has been the case here in CA for some time, and outright legalization. CA moonbats are fuming they didn’t get to legalization first.

ObamaCare taxes poised to hit next month, potentially at the same time as Obama’s determination to drive us off the fiscal cliff causes the “Bush tax cuts” to be rescinded.

The IRS this past week published rules for some of the first major taxes meant to help pay for President Obama’s massive insurance coverage expansion. Together, they will raise investment and income taxes on top earners and impose a separate — and controversial — tax on medical devices.
The bundle of fees has been largely overlooked as lawmakers and the White House bicker over the Bush tax rates, with Republicans demanding they be extended for everyone and Obama insisting rates rise for top earners. But that same group of earners is already in the crosshairs under the ObamaCare tax rules published this week.
Starting Jan. 1, investment income for individuals earning over $200,000 and households earning over $250,000 will be subject to a new 3.8 percent tax. Further, regular income above those thresholds will be hit with a .9 percent Medicare surtax. Should the Bush tax rates expire for those workers, those increases will be compounded.

Even if President Obama succeeds in getting Republicans to agree to tax hikes on the wealthy as part of a “fiscal cliff” deal, the country’s grim budget realities will still cast a long shadow — limiting his ambitions as he begins plotting a second-term agenda.

There are now more state capitals dominated by a single party — where one party controls the legislature and the governor’s office — than at any time since 1952.

And nearly twice as many are controlled by Republicans as Democrats. Pretty good for a party Obama hoped to crush and obliterate.

Liberals typically argue that marginal tax rates really don’t make that much difference to economic behavior. So then why are so many companies rushing to pay special dividends before the first of the year, when taxes on dividends will triple?

I posted on this one before, from a different source.

I missed this footnote: Warren Buffett is the Post‘s largest shareholder.

IT’S TIME TO STICK IT TO THE BLUE STATES (and I live in one…)

Most of the nation’s “rich”–those earning over $250,000 a year, or, depending on President Obama’s mood, $175,000–live in the blue states. Moreover, the deductions that are likely slated for reduction or elimination, including state taxes and home mortgages, mostly benefit blue state residents. So the New York Times, a prime agitator for higher taxes, appears to be having second thoughts!

    The Democratic Agenda Emerges

Newly discovered wall writings found in Guatemala show the famed Maya culture’s obsession with cycles of time. But they also show calendars that go well beyond 2012, the year when the vanished civilization, according to popular culture, expected the end of the world.

“So much for the supposed end of the world,” says archaeologist William Saturno of Boston University, lead author of a study in the journal Science, which reported the discovery on Thursday.
Discovered in the ruins of Xultun (SHOOL-toon) , the astronomical calendar was unearthed from a filled-in scribe’s room.

They could not survive, yet the had this awesome ability to predict the future thousands of years in advance?

    Something doesn’t make sense there.

O darn, I better get to my Christmas shopping after all then!

Good news: It appears that the world won’t end in 2012 after all. Turns out that the Mayan inscription that many saw as foretelling the end of the world, may have been misinterpreted.
Speaking at the archaeological site of Palenque in southern Mexico, Gronemeyer explained his scientifically-based belief is that the passage simply refers to a passing of a god, not the end of humanity.
Gronemeyer said the inscription describes the return of the Mayan god of war and creation on the equivalent of Dec. 21, 2012. While that doesn’t sound promising for humanity, Gronemeyer reassuringly added that there’s nothing apocalyptic in the date. “The date acquired a symbolic value because it is seen as a reflection of the day of creation,” Gronemeyer said. “It is the passage of a god and not necessarily a great leap for humanity.”

Rodriguez, a veteran, was upset with the content of Williams’s bumper sticker which claimed that America made a big mistake re-electing President Barack Obama. Rodriguez told police that he wasn’t interested in discussing politics and told Williams, “People like you should be shot,” according to police.

After a brief shoving match, police said Williams drew a .380 pistol and forced Rodriguez to the ground. Williams claimed he was restraining Rodriguez until the police arrived.

According to the criminal complaint, Williams said he feared for his life because he believed Rodriguez had a knife and access to a gun. However police said they found no weapons in the area other than Williams’.

Williams was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and false imprisonment following the altercation.

@ TED, that particular newscast may be over a year old, but that just goes to show how serious this problem is and that it’s been going on for a long time.

What I don’t understand is why the fabled Koch Brothers don’t start an Independent News Network Service to air all the outrages that the rest of them – including 20%-SOWdi-owned figleaf FOX – refuse to broadcast.

It is quite obvious that WE need an independent media just as much as WE need a Third Party, if not even more so.

An independent media network broadcasting from Sea to Shining Sea would at least be able to hold Republicans’ feet to the fire..

Then there’s the topic of the Marxist takeover of our school system, which is even more difficult to overcome than our lack of media presence.. be continued another time, another thread.. I have no solution I can think of, not even wealthy investors can save the brains of our young.. especially when they won’t even step up to save the media.

Sweden’s Social Democrats using moslem “immigration” to punish voters. Their leader has publicly stated that the more swedes vote for the opposition SWEDEN-DEMOCRATS, the more moslems will be imported. They have even changed the constitution to allow non-Swedes who speak little or no Swedish to work as police officers, going so far as to give “immigrants” preference in hiring. Non-Swedes may also hold high political and judicial office and the new constitution requires all Swedes to “practice multi-culturalism”.

    Sounds crazy, doesn’t it?

Could never happen here, of course. Or could it?

Hmmm.. seems like liberals and commies all around the Western World have caught on that “immigration is the best revenge”..

And WHO do you think might have an interest in taking “revenge” on “flyover Americans”..?

Apparently the thief didn’t get his obamaphone

A quadriplegic man with cerebral palsy is missing the phone that gave him a voice when a teenager stole it off his wheelchair, he says. William Washington, 38, is unable to walk, use his hands or talk, and he could only watch as the phone was taken right off the tray of his wheelchair in the lobby of his Staten Island apartment building Nov. 8. Washington was on the iPhone at the time using a special pointer to type a message that would be spoken with voice technology. According to police, a teenager grabbed it and ran.

CA School District Owes $1 Billion On $100 Million Loan

Capital appreciation bonds are unlike typical bonds where a school district is required to make immediate and regular payments. Instead, CABs allow districts to defer payments well into the future — by which time lots of interest has accrued.

In the West Contra Costa Schools’ case, that $2.5 million bond will cost the district a whopping $34 million to repay.

In total, districts have borrowed about $3 billion to finance new school construction, maintenance and educational materials. But the actual payback on those loans will exceed $16 billion.

Perhaps the best example of the CAB issue is suburban San Diego‘s Poway Unified School District, which borrowed a little more than $100 million. But “debt service will be almost $1 billion,” Lockyer says. “So, over nine times amount of the borrowing. There are worse ones, but that’s pretty bad.”

Poway is a bustling metropolis just outside the city of San Diego here in San Diego county.

France’s interior minister said Sunday that there was a “kind of racism” behind the bombings of dozens of vacation homes on the French island of Corsica.

While Corsica was definitively taken over by the French in the 18th century, it has significant autonomy and maintains a distinct language and culture. Homegrown nationalists have long pushed for more autonomy and have specifically lashed out at the influx of “continentals” from mainland France who flock each summer to the Mediterranean island known for its mountain vistas and rugged beaches.

Officials have said that the 26 homes targeted were mostly second residences, which often belong to mainland French. A graffiti tag of a separatist group was left on one of the houses hit, although the Paris prosecutor’s office said it was too early consider that a claim of responsibility.

And development plans seem to be on hold over fund-raising and a dispute with Con Edison, which owns half the site. El-Gamal’s company bought half the site and leased the other half from the utility. But the utility threatened a year ago to evict Park51 over $1.7 in unpaid rent.

El-Gamal sued Con Edison, saying its appraisal and formula figuring the rent were wrong. A judge ruled for the utility on the appraisal, with the rent lawsuit continuing this week.

But in an interview this past year, El-Gamal said he was exploring other uses of the property, including an office tower or condominiums, while leaving a prayer space. So far, the prayer space — which admittedly, is thriving — is the only thing at the controversial mosque site.

Like liberals/moonbats, Hamas leaders seem to be out of touch with reality.

Meshaal, in an uncompromising speech reported by Reuters, told the rally he would never recognize Israel and pledged to “free the land of Palestine inch by inch.”

“We will never recognize the legitimacy of the Israeli occupation and therefore there is no legitimacy for Israel, no matter how long it will take,” Meshaal said.

Keep in mind that the longer Hamas refuses to accept the legitimacy of Israel and deal in good faith, the more land winds up as part of Israel.

More than 160 Palestinians and just six Israelis were killed during last month’s conflict and Hamas calls that a victory?
