Quote of the Decade

If only we could get Comrade Obama to swallow a dose of his own rhetoric. Here‘s what he had to say when Bush wanted to raise the debt ceiling in 2006:

“The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. … Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.’ Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.”

Because a Republican was in the White House at the time, not raising the debt ceiling didn’t mean civilization would collapse. That’s why every Democrat Senator voted against it.

    I don’t know the details of the debt ceiling plan, but unless it involves defunding PBS, NPR, and Planned Parenthood, then it’s just more sacrifice for us and none for them. Same as usual.

    I think Wyatt and I are finally starting to converge on a consensus.

    We need a thread to discuss some practical preparations (maybe an open Q&A drawing on the different specialties of the talented people here) for the coming changes. That could include everything from things like DIY home security (window films, door frame reinforcements), preparation stockpiling, finance, getting fit, energy efficiency / off grid, etc.

    We can no longer be content organizing a movement to scream at the captain, imploring him to turn away from the iceberg. We have already hit that iceberg. Our choice now is whether to rearrange the deck chairs and listen to the band play or to begin making practical moves towards the lifeboats.

    The salient facts are that it continues reckless and unsustainable $1T+/year deficit spending in exchange for upping the debt ceiling long enough for the Ponzi to march on just a little while longer.

    Here are two budget busting exercises (the second posted above also by GoFAH):

    The reason I don’t like the second is that it is not detailed enough – basically you have to throw out what little good the federal government does with the bad. I am a bit leery of the first because of the source – I am not convinced they’re honest as they’ve been so dishonest consistently in the past.

    I did see a third similar exercise that was extrememly detailed and came from a source that seemed more trustworthy, but I cannot find it at the moment.

    There’s also a “budget busting” free computer game (but I’d be careful downloading it without checking further – I have not, plus it clearly appears to be rigged towards Democratic/leftist ideals – in that a big part of the strategy is increasing taxes and the total size of government, which is not surprising if you look at the source – so it may be a waste of time):

    This one, from the “Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget” gives itself away as a complete fraud with it’s goal of “reducing the federal deficit to 60% of the GDP by 2018”. How about trying to eliminate federal deficits entirely?
