Soyonara Prius

For a century, the Japanese tried to develop an electric car that makes economic sense. They are finally giving up:

“Because of its shortcomings — driving range, cost and recharging time — the electric vehicle is not a viable replacement for most conventional cars,” said Toyota’s vice chairman, Takeshi Uchiyamada, in a Reuters report. “We need something entirely new.”

Toyota and Nissan are dropping plug-in electric car development in favor of hydrogen fuel cells. But don’t expect Obama to stop wasting massive amounts of our money subsidizing the pointless Chevy Volt.

Let’s hope this dinosaur can make it to the tar pits.

On a tip from Wiggins.

A few years ago Top Gear did a test drive of a Prius. They hated it. At the end, the only practical use they could come up with for a Prius was as a target, so they shot it with every imaginable weapon available.

Honey, I’ve lost a lot of weight since I’ve been here.
    Or haven’t you noticed? 🙁

I give Toyota credit; they developed their hybrid to counter all the government-sponsored hybrid research being conducted by the US car companies. When the government funding stopped, the US companies dropped their hybrid efforts like a rock.

Toyota developed and marketed their own hybrid using technology they developed.

If only the car had included a granola dispenser.

Why are you showing a Prius? The story is about electric cars, not hybrids. I’m a conservative, and I own a Prius C, and love it… 55-60 mpg around town. (I have conservative bumper stickers on it such as “Global Warming is Caused by The Sun.” It really confuses people.) It’s not an “electric car…” it’s a 4-cylinder hybrid with a gas engine / electric motor.
I bought a true electric car several years ago when gas prices spiked. It was an old Geo Metro converted to all-electric with 10 rechargeable batteries. It was OK for driving around in my small town in the summer, but each full charge took me only 30 miles, and it took 6 hours to recharge it. Also, it only went about 20 miles in colder weather. No thanks. I sold it online a year later, and actually made a little profit on it! So, regarding electric cars, I agree. They are just not user friendly.
It seems a lot of people love to hate the Prius. Fine. However, there are lots of us conservatives who drive them because we like the gas mileage. Three of my Republican friends also drive a Prius. My wife and I test drove other cars in the same price range, and we liked the Prius the best (it’s our third one!). So, to each his own.

I spent a few winter months in Miami with a very rich and very liberal and foreign friend who even went so far as to rent me minivan I needed for some freelance work I was doing and which I later reimbursed him for.

This guy had both a Harley and a Prius. He offered me use of the Prius but never the Harley LOL

Being a bit of a car nut, I took him up on it. It felt a bit like a toy but very comfortable and VERY quiet. What surprised me the most was the ACCELERATION.

None of this means I became a fan of this odd low-to-the-ground vehicle. I am just saying that I actually had use of one.

That said, the slower minivan served my purposes much better, not only from a payload perspective but I just like sitting a bit higher off the road and having some space around me.

And when you carry photographic equipment and provisions, a spacious minivan with a nice AC just can’t be beat.

Unless you give me a Suburban or an Escalade.

The Prius will be remembered but hardly be missed.

PS. My friend still has his Harley, but dumped the Prius years ago. He’s still very liberal though. I almost came to blows over Al Sharpton with him one time.

    That’s life.

Last month while waiting for service on my SUV, I checked out a Nissan Leaf. I can’t remember what sticker price was – about $50,000, I think. But I definitely remember the vehicle optimal range (under perfect conditions) is 73 miles, at which time it requires a 6-hour charge.

Keeping the subjugated close to home is very important to the communists. They have wet dreams of disarming you and forbidding travel.

Don’t these usually also have the COEXIST bumper sticker?

  17. Son of Taz says:

@questout, that version was the non-Massachusetts compliant model. In Mass, all Priuses had to have an Obama and/or Lizzie Warren bumper sticker attached to be street legal.

Romney bumper stickers were noticeably absent. Putting one on a Prius insured being stopped by a member of the law enforcement union, also known as the State Police.

My brother is no liberal, and he owns a Prius and loves it. He gets 50 mpg in the thing.
