There Is No Gender Wage Gap, Only a Usefulness Wage Gap

As George Orwell noted,

We have now sunk to a depth at which restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men.

Christina Hoff Sommers takes up the task regarding the bogus gender wage gap:

Thoroughly useless women’s and gender studies degrees have increased by 300% since 1990. Few men major in these fields.

The wage gap between those who do what it takes to make themselves economically valuable and those who don’t will not disappear so long as there is even a scintilla of freedom, fairness, or sanity.

On tips from KirklesWorth and Jester.

A young man who works for you finds out he’s going to be a father. He’ll immediately ask for more work, more overtime, and more responsibility. He’ll seek to earn a raise or a promotion, or any other way he can get more money to pay for all the things his new baby will need.

Imagine instead that it’s a young woman who works for you who finds out she’s going to be a mother. She’ll get maternity leave, and you’ll have to pay a temp to do her job. Even if the maternity leave is unpaid (you monster), the temp won’t be as productive until he comes up to speed. And the temp can never hope to be hired full-time, because you must keep the job open to the mother when (or even if) she returns. If she does return, she’ll virtually have to be retrained (having been gone from work for months), and even after that she won’t be as productive because she’ll have to take care of a growing child. You might have to pay for child care at work. And if she decided NOT to come back to work, you’ll have to find and hire a replacement (other than the temp), and train that replacement.

Which is a greater risk to your bottom line, a young father who like Boxer in “Animal Farm” will say, “I will work harder,” or a young mother-to-be who will cost you a lot more than salary, with significantly lower productivity?

If I sent you out into a crowded street and told you to find a man who’s 5’10”, do you think you could do that? Yeah, it’d be pretty easy. In fact, for every man you found that’s 5’11” you’d find another that 5’9″. THAT’S how 5’10” becomes the average.

I can sit here all day and name companies that pay $1.00/$1.00 female/male.

So if .70/1.00 (or whatever pulled-out-of-their-ass number is the new one this week) is “the national average,” then let’s see them name some companies that pay that way.

If I can name 100 companies that pay 1.00/1.00, then they’ll have to counter that by naming 1,000 companies that pay .60/1.00. Or 100 companies that pay .35/1.00!

But they can’t even name ONE SINGLE company that pays what they say is “the national average.”

they also can never come up with a single example of a woman with equal skills AND EXPERIENCE and no long breaks in her work record that gets paid 70% of her male counterpart at that company.
