What a Gas

Instinctively hostile to economic liberty, the liberal governors of New York and New Jersey have imposed price controls on gasoline, destroying the incentive for the free market to provide gas from other parts of the country in the aftermath of the mayhem Sandy wrought upon local refineries, as Reason aptly explains:

Unsurprisingly, Obama’s bosom buddy Krispy Kreme Christie has forced himself to fall back upon the authoritarian tactic of rationing.

But not to worry; the same government that breaks your kneecaps is always there to hand you a crutch paid for by some other guy. Unfortunately, the crutch is always defective:

Free gas came with gallons of chaos. …

The trouble-plagued giveaway began when Gov. Cuomo’s office announced in the morning that officials would try to ease the post-Sandy gas crisis by giving out free fuel to both “emergency vehicles and the general public.”

The gas was to be dispensed from trucks at five locations around the area — and throngs of desperate drivers showed up to fill their tanks.

But by the afternoon Cuomo spokesman Matt Wing rolled back the offer of free gas, announcing that fuel was intended for emergency vehicles first and foremost.

The change came after the US Department of Defense — which provided the gas in coordination with the National Guard — said the gas was only for first responders.

A Cuomo-administration source blamed the mix up on the military.

Bleated the source,

“It’s not our fault.”

Despite Big Government’s characteristic incompetence and blame-shifting, some civilians were able to obtain free gas to go with their Obama phones. They had to wait in line for hours, and line cutting was rampant, but at least someone else was forced to pay for it.

The proposed solution for the gasoline shortages caused largely by government meddling is as always more government meddling:

Elected officials in both New York and New Jersey said they’d push for laws requiring gas stations to have generators to supply fuel in a similar crisis.

A commenter at the liberal Daily News summed up the free government gas farce:

“These people don’t even have cars. They getting Obama gas and selling it on the side streets.”

Even in areas controlled by moonbats, some form of capitalism will spontaneously emerge to meet people’s needs. But maybe if statists pass just a few more laws, everyone will have everything they need for free.

Lining up for free government gas in Brooklyn.

Why is the boy-in-cheif ignoring his subjects? Why isn’t the stinking press attacking the boy-in-chief like they attacked Bush after Katrina?

The press sucks. Obama sucks. Liberals stink.

The cocoapuffers are always in line first for the free $hit.

How the hell would Cuomo NOT know the fuel was for emergency vehicles ?
Elected officials in both New York and New Jersey said they’d push for laws requiring gas stations to have generators to supply fuel in a similar crisis.

Or similarly, they can get off their Marxist a**es and do something to get the power back on.

I would not be surprised to hear these nanny state airheads were camped across the street with field glasses enjoying the calamity with salted popcorn and king size big gulps.

  6. Buffalobob says:

They heard free and they responded. Never mind they don’t have the required safety containers or any container. It’s free and they’re going to get some.

    ROTFLMAO!!!! Stupid liberal asso’s!

  8. The Him says:

I like the pic of the guy holding a 5 gallon water bottle, which should melt within about 5 minutes of filling it with gas.

    Obama voters is smaaarrt.

  9. gemalo says:

Two questions about that photo: Did all the white people in N.Y. get out of town? If they didn’t, don’t any white people own cars?

  10. Gunny G says:

Where is a JDAM when you need one? Fucking parasites.

  11. Ghost of FA Hayek says:

    Wait, now it makes sense.
These budding entrepreneurs were to go forth, find those stranded rescue vehicles and SELL them that gas.
The perfect model of “middle out” Keynesian stimulus.

From the taxpayers, to the National Guard, to Cuomo’s bureaucracy, to the 47 percent, and finally to the ambulance en route to a stabbing at a free gas line.

  12. Artfldgr says:

A good proportion of these people are apartment dwellers. stoves with pilot lights, flip switches, cigarette smokers, and a 5 gallon gas can in the apartment? look in the photo, think that they might have dispensed to the joker with the water bottle?

i would not be one bit surprised to find that tonight there are a few fires or flash explosions because hundreds of people brought gas cans home to their apartments.

and if the news says its dangerous, will they dump it down the sewer?

  13. Jimbo says:

gemalo; “white” people fill the tank up every time they go to the station. Those in the picture (many of them, at least) are those who never put in more than a couple of $ worth so they’ll have some left over for Schlitz Malt Liquor, a lottery ticket, a pack of Newports, and some $2 bling at the checkout. The people pictured have PRIORITIES.

  15. Ben Dover says:

To paraphrase that moron Kanye West, Obama doesn’t care about White people. Staten Island is known as the “forgotten borough.” We are the smallest of the five boroughs and the most suburban. We are also for the most part, middle class, predominately White and lean right politically. It is for these reasons I believe Staten Island always gets shafted by the liberal politicians. We pay more in taxes and get much less in return. That same trend continues with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. Relief has been painfully slow to Staten Island, probably the hardest hit area in the tri-state region. But despite the ineptness of FEMA, the Red Cross etc., Staten Islanders are assisting their neighbors and are beginning to pick up the pieces. The island has some tough days ahead but I don’t think we’ll see people rioting over free Obama gas. With the exception of Breezy Point Queens I can’t say this for the rest of the city.

The Red Cross acts as a sort of official charity, the Fannie and Freddie of United States Government “kindness” (with other peoples money, of course)

Great link. The article pretty much says it all and I don’t even want to get started on Bloomberg and the marathon. Typical elitist, out of touch, Manhatten liberal.

  18. Sam Adams says:

Funny thing…..the New Jersey EPA demands gasoline that meets different requirements than the PA EPA. It is against the law for folks to buy gas in PA and truck it to New Jersey.

Here’s what should happen in a rational world. Budding entrepreneurs would bring truckloads of gas from other states, set up temporary filling stations (unload directly from the truck) make a couple of bucks a gallon profit and repeat as needed.

  19. Dr. 9 says:

Notice how it’s always the same people lining up whenever they hear the word “free”. They don’t care what it is, (nor who actually has to pay for it) they just want it, and then want more.

  20. Jester says:

All of my progressive friends would simply blame this on Bush and the GOP; case closed.

  21. Tim says:

Is there not a single NON-Black person in Brooklyn?

  22. Fat Stanley says:

I love that now Chris Christie is a liberal. When he speaks at the Republican National Convention, he’s the chubby darling of conservatives. Now he’s a RINO. Y’all gotta get your stories straight! Unless a politician is a friggin’ Ayn Rand Taliban, folks here declare him the second coming of Joe Stalin. NJ is the most densely populated state in the country. It CAN’T be all Ruby Ridge personal liberty for a state where people actually have to work together.

  23. M. Wilson says:

“It CAN’T be all Ruby Ridge personal liberty for a state where people actually have to work together.”

Implying that two people can’t work together unless one is holding the other at gunpoint, or has a cop doing so as a proxy.

It’s not like people are capable of reaching a negotiated deal based on the mutual profit of all parties involved, leading to a voluntary exchange wherein violence is reserved only as insurance against breach of contract. I’m sure there’s a word for this but they seem to have left it out of the Newspeak dictionary…

  24. Really? says:

    Christie is a liberal?
He said he’s voting for Romney earlier.

Can you all clarify this for me? Is he liberal or conservative? Or is it a mix?

Wow – probably too deep for you all but – hell – go fer it.

  25. ? everything says:

Christie is a RINO, antigun & muzzie lover. fixed that teachers’ union tho, his only fucking claim to fame.

  26. Ghost of FA Hayek says:

What better time than in a moment of crisis for us all to hold hands, wrap the chains of government bureaucracy around us, and revel in the power of the state.

It’s as if an open wound isn’t producing enough pain, so
    we pour salt into it.
Hey Stanley, it looks like mission accomplished in Haiti.
At least 15,000 homes in Haiti were destroyed in a country where 350,000 were still homeless and living in tents nearly three years after the January 2010 onslaught of the earthquake.
Does the UN now step up earthquake relief ?
Or just insure that, god forbid free market capitalism not break out there

    RE: Fat Stanley says:

Nonsense. He was NEVER my darling, and he was never a conservative. I admired him for trying to stand up against union power, but he has never been a hero of mine. When it comes to the Constitution, he’s as blind as Obama. I, for one, will be happy when I never have to hear his name again.

  28. Rickyd says:

  29. Jay B. says:

So… it’s racist to point out the only people who showed up to beg for gas are blacks, right?

  30. Vic Kelley says:

Wow what a sea of diversity. Look at all those hoodies, too.

  31. bobby VP says:

First of all look at all those upstanding citizens! Next you’ll notice the one individual carrying a non-legal container for transporting gas. We better arrest him
