Affirmative Action Applied to Air Traffic Controllers

How far will our ideologically demented ruling class push Affirmative Action before people start pushing back? Already it has played a role in destroying our schools, with a liberal judge actually abolishing aptitude tests on the grounds that blacks don’t score as well. But apparently people don’t think it matters whether teachers have any qualifications other than skin color. If being black can get you into the White House, why not a classroom? Maybe airliners crashing into each other will wake people up:

A recently completed six-month investigation by Fox Business Network found that the Federal Aviation Administration has quietly moved away from merit-based hiring criteria in order to increase the number of women and minorities who staff airport control towers. …

Until 2013, the FAA gave hiring preference to controller applicants who earned a degree from one of its Collegiate Training Initiative schools and scored high enough on an eight-hour screening test called the Air Traffic Selection and Training exam, or AT-SAT, which measures cognitive skills. The Obama administration, however, determined that the process excluded too many from minority groups.

Any measure of cognitive skills will do that, unless the minority group in question is Asians or Jews, who do not enjoy the special favor of our liberal rulers precisely because they do not lack aptitude. So out with the AT-SAT.

By the start of last year, the FAA was using a biographical questionnaire (BQ) to initially vet potential hires. The questions—“How many sports did you play in high school?”, “What has been the major cause of your failures?”—seem designed to elicit stories of personal disadvantage or family hardship rather than determine success on the job.

But then, in a country run by bleeding heart moonbats, having a sob story or whimpering that you have been historically oppressed is much more likely to result in career success than competence or hard work.

How effective self-pity will be at keeping planes in the air remains to be seen.

It must by social justice. Nothing else could be this unfair:

After the FAA changed its screening process in 2014, thousands of applicants who were already in the pipeline—people who had obtained an FAA-accredited degree, taken the AT-SAT exam and had been designated “well-qualified” to become air-traffic controllers—were told by the government that they would have to start the process again. “But this time, when they applied for a job, their college degrees and previous military experience would mean nothing,” reported Fox Business. “They would now compete with thousands of people the agency calls ‘off the street hires’; anyone who wants to, can walk in off the street without any previous training and apply for an air traffic control job.”

In other words, the current policy is to deliberately favor less-qualified applicants over more qualified applicants in the name of obtaining the “right” racial and gender mix among air-traffic controllers.

To get an idea of the effect Affirmative Action will have on passenger safety, look to what it has accomplished in medicine:

In 1973 Patrick Chavis was one of five black students admitted to a medical school in California through an affirmative-action program designed to increase minority enrollment. Allan Bakke, a white applicant who was rejected despite having much higher test scores than the black applicants, sued. In 1978 the Supreme Court struck down the program, but Chavis would go on to earn his medical degree and become a poster child for advocates of racial preferences. In 1995 he made the cover of the New York Times magazine. Sen. Ted Kennedy called him “the perfect example” of how affirmative action worked. In 1998 the California medical board revoked Chavis’s medical license, noting his “inability to perform some of the most basic duties required of a physician” after several patients in his care died or were severely injured.

People who believe in moonbattery were harmless flakes back when they were smoking dope with flowers in their hair. But now they are running the country, and there is no longer anything harmless about their demented ideology.

    Same as the diversity in the Military. When your son is killed in some far away land because his position is overrun by an enemy force and the females in his combat unit lacked the strength for hand to hand combat, you can take solace in the political correctness that killed him.

I taught for a while down at the FAA Academy and instead of finding us well qualified black technicians to train they sent us hamburger flippers. What a disaster. Even the black techs and engineers were fed up with the stupidity of the hires we were saddled with in the classroom.

    I served in the Air Force and the FAA side by side with black men who were as qualified as I and some even more so. The diversity hires were such a danger that most of them were sideways promoted to non-certifying jobs to prevent them killing a planeload of people.

    I’ve been an FAA air traffic controller for 24 years now. They can let in who they want, but there’s a big difference between who gets hired and who ultimately gets signed off as a certified controller. No matter what your race or gender, you still have to perform against the busiest traffic levels to the standards set by the only 10-50 other people in the world certified at that position. So this isn’t a safety issue — only the ones truly qualified will actually get certified — this is more a manpower issue as thousands like myself are set to retire and few qualified trainees are in the pipeline behind them.
