Broncos Victory Is a Victory for Football

Yesterday’s Super Bowl victory by the Denver Broncos was a very good thing for football, and not only because it allowed us to take vicarious pride in the fitting probable climax of Peyton Manning’s incredible career. A victory for Cam Newton’s Panthers would have further alienated fans who have been drifting away from the game, disgusted by the direction the sport has been taking. Manning is everything an athlete should aspire to be; Newton personifies poor sportsmanship:

Newton’s reactions to his nonstop triumphs even raised the ire of a Tennessee mom who wrote a letter that went viral complaining of his “chest puffs,” “pelvic thrusts” and “arrogant struts and the ‘in your face’ taunting” as the Panthers dismantled the Titans.

After his team bested defending NFC champs the Seattle Seahawks in the playoffs — and Newton tossed a Seahawks flag to the turf in celebration — a fan started a petition to have “one of the most unprofessional, unsportsmanlike individuals on the face of the planet” banned from Seahawks home games forever.

And most folks figured the Panthers’ explosive play would propel them to certain victory over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50 — and we’d be treated to one more round of Newton’s exultations.

Fortunately, we were not subjected to that.

Poor winners also make poor losers. Newton showed up for a postgame press conference yesterday wearing a Trayvon hoodie and behaved like a sulky teenager not quite too old for a spanking.

Even his sullen one-word answers were less discreditable than his performance during the game:

Cam left us with the jarring image of him recoiling from a fumble after Von Miller knocked the ball out of his hands with four minutes left in the game and Carolina trailing, 16-10. Not only did Newton not pounce on the loose football — one that Broncos safety T.J. Ward ultimately recovered at the Panthers’ 9-yard line — but he also jumped back after a couple Broncos defenders dove toward it. It was a decision that his head coach, Ron Rivera, explained by saying Newton “was trying to find a way to get the ball and keep it alive.” A more jaded perspective was that Newton froze at the worst possible moment. … Newton reacted to that ball as if it were a live hand grenade.

Apparently he was afraid he might get hurt. Football can be a rough game.

People have good reason to say, “Let the best man win.” It is better for the game when things turn out that way.

Bill Romanowski Calls Panthers QB Cam Newton ‘boy’

    NY Daily News

Former NFL standout Bill Romanowski is a racist.

Last night, after Cam Newton, who broke records for being sacked in the Super Bowl, saw his dreams of winning the game dashed. After it was over, as expected, he was utterly dejected.

This is normal, but black men are not often given the space to be emotional or expressive without being subjected to white anger.

Romanowski, a former Denver Bronco with a bad reputation, could not wait to chime in. In a now deleted tweet, he said “You’ll never last in the NFL with that attitude. The world doesn’t revolve around you, boy! #CamNewton”

Apparently, even though it’s 2016, I have to explain where the racism is in that tweet.

Newton is not a boy. He’s not a rookie. He’s the MVP of the NFL. He’s a father. He’s the face of his franchise. He’s a businessman and a role model.

Racist white men, for hundreds of years, have found power in calling grown black men “boy.”

Age has nothing to do with it.

Throughout history, black men who were decades older than white men have been called “boy” by them. It’s meant to belittle and dehumanize. It has deep roots stemming from slavery, all the way through Jim Crow, and, as we now see, into modern America.

Let’s not mince words here. Romanowski wasn’t saying Newton was acting like a boy. He made a statement to Newton, put a comma after that statement, and followed the comma with the word, “boy.” He was calling Cam a boy.

Show me one instance where another league MVP has been called “boy” by anyone other than a stone cold racist. Show me one instance where any athlete in the Super Bowl has been called such a slur.

We should have seen this coming. Last week, Romanowski openly threatened Newton, saying he would choke him and hold on to it for a long time, until he couldn’t breathe. One of the commentators then using the exact words of Eric Garner, who was choked to death by the NYPD, said the words “I can’t breathe.”

Who says this stuff? I don’t care how crass this man is known for being — this is disgusting.

To be clear, this was no coming out party for Romanowski. He was a racist before he wrote a bigoted tweet about Newton, but he has now proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt that being an African American quarterback still requires athletes to wade through a sea of ridiculousness that has nothing to do with athleticism.

Romanowski once spit in the face of another black player. That’s about as deeply insulting as it gets. Later, another athlete told Sports Illustrated that Romanowski referred to other black players privately by the “n-word.”

Also recall that two years ago, Denver’s first play was a disaster, with the shotgun snap going into their own end zone for a safety. ESPN played that over and over and over for the next week. Manning was made to look like a fool. Can we count on them to repeatedly show similar disasters (and there were plenty) by Newton? The press conference is a good start.
