Millions Shiver Without Power in Preview of Green New Deal

As we saw coming, a combination of bad weather and partial reliance on green energy has put Texans in a bad place:

A frigid blast of winter weather across the U.S. plunged Texas into an unusually icy emergency Monday that knocked out power to more than 2 million people…

Temperatures nosedived into the single-digits as far south as San Antonio, and homes that had already been without electricity for hours had no certainty about when the lights and heat would come back on…

We are told by the liberal establishment — incredibly, with a straight face — that we must ever more massively subsidize wind turbines and watch the government progressively throttle more efficient means of generating energy because there is a “climate emergency,” fossil fuels having made it be too warm out.

At least Texans can console themselves that they are not the only ones to have made the mistake of letting themselves be bullied into partial reliance of wind energy, which does not work when the turbines are covered in ice:

Sky News host Cory Bernardi says Germany “should be thankful” for non-renewable energy after forced reliance on surrounding countries’ power after a cold snap froze solar panels and wind turbines.

“These monuments to green madness need to draw current from the remains of the fossil fuel power grid to stop them from getting frozen solid,” he said.

Forbes lists some of the lessons we are learning the hard way:

The massive blast of Siberia-like cold that is wreaking havoc across North America is proving that if we humans want to keep surviving frigid winters, we are going to have to keep burning natural gas — and lots of it — for decades to come.

That cold reality contradicts the “electrify everything” scenario that’s being promoted by climate change activists, politicians, and academics.

Texas relies on forests of hideous wind turbines to generate 20% of its energy. The result:

Our power here in central Austin went out at about 3 am. I am writing this under a blanket, have multiple layers of clothes on, and am nervously watching my laptop’s battery indicator.

In other words, he wrote this from our green energy future.

This blizzard proves that we have not been taking our energy security seriously enough. …

This blizzard proves that during extreme weather winter, solar panels and wind turbines are of little or no value to the electric grid.

This blizzard proves that our natural gas grid is part of our critical infrastructure and that we shut it down at our peril. The natural gas network is essential because it can deliver big surges in energy supplies during periods of peak demand. … [W]e can store vast amounts of gas and only tiny quantities of electricity.

Natural gas is cheap, clean, efficient, and abundant. But Democrats don’t like it, because it is politically unclean according to their faith. That’s why they are phasing it out in favor of having us shiver in the dark.

It’s essential to note that the blizzard and blackouts that are paralyzing the country are occurring at roughly the same time that some of America’s most famous activists and politicians are saying we should quit using all hydrocarbons and dozens of cities across the country are imposing bans on the use of natural gas.

Those who freeze to death are sacrifices on the altar of moonbat ideology. Every winter will be like this and worse if liberals are not dislodged from power.

Wind Power Can Leave Even Texans in the Cold

Last I knew, the USA led the world in energy production. But a war on energy has begun. The state most associated with energy production is Texas. Under Biden’s handlers, even Texans can expect to see more stories about power outages:

Temperatures Monday night could dip to near single digits after a weekend with highs barely breaking 40 degrees. Western and northern areas of Texas have already been coated by ice that has taken out large swaths of power generating wind turbines as power demand soars.

Laments Public Utility Commission Chairman DeAnn Walker,

“My understanding is, the wind turbines are all frozen.”

Leslie Sopko, communications manager for the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, confirms that they have had “a significant number of wind facilities that had to be taken out of service due to icing.”

The wind turbines that have been coated in ice will need time and warmer temperatures before they can function again, says Ramanan Krishnamoorti, chief energy officer at the University of Houston.

Sometimes warmer temperatures are not enough, because the ice weighs down and breaks the expensive turbines, thankfully preventing them from chopping up more eagles and hawks.

Wind generates 20% of the electricity in resource-rich Texas, due to massive subsidies. Imagine if Biden et al. phase out fossil fuels over the next few years as they have been promising. A cold snap will mean freezing in the dark. If you try to stay alive by burning furniture in the fireplace, environmentally correct neighbors will turn you in to the Green Police.

Why Electricity Is So Expensive

Charles McConnell, who was Assistant Secretary of Energy in the Obama Administration, explains why the cost of electricity keeps going up, even though the price of natural gas and coal, the primary resources required to generate electricity efficiently, keeps going down:

The scale of green energy waste is already staggering, but we haven’t seen anything yet. Wait until the Biden Regime gets its version of the Green New Deal up to full speed. In utopia, only John Kerry types will have access to fossil fuels.

Environmentalists: Treat Fossil Fuels Like Nuclear Weapons

Single-party Democrat rule will mean crazy people in charge of energy policy, because the environmentalist Left is truly insane. Fossil fuels keep us alive by making everything go. Enviroleftists consider these precious sources of energy to be as dangerous as nuclear weapons.

From Grist:

For decades, the potential for a nuclear catastrophe felt like a waking threat, just around the corner. Then, in 1968, many of the nations once responsible for pushing the world to the brink of nuclear war collectively agreed to reverse course, signing the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons. …

Half a century later, the nations once stockpiling nuclear weapons are now stockpiling fossil fuels, which are already upending life on earth as we know it.

Progressives believe — or pretend to believe — that fossil fuels make the weather warm, and that warm weather is somehow a threat to life on earth, despite the climate having been far warmer in the past.

That’s why a group of activists, policy experts, and academics are beginning to push for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, modeled off its predecessor on nuclear weapons. Both treaties are rooted in the idea that “there are certain technologies and certain substances that pose such a global risk to humanity that we have an obligation to address that risk together,” explained Carroll Muffett, the president of the Center for International Environmental Law.

Only spittle-spewing maniacs who live under overpasses or work for irrelevant NGOs believe that natural gas is the equivalent of nuclear missiles, right? Wrong:

In mid-December, the New York City Council held a virtual hearing to consider endorsing a resolution for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. It could become the second city in the world to do so, following Vancouver, Canada — assuming another city doesn’t get there first. The Los Angeles City Council is poised to endorse the treaty… By adopting the treaty, cities could build momentum for a multinational agreement to wind down the dangerous production of fossil fuels — not just curbing emissions — in a similar approach to the global disarmament of nuclear weapons.

The same radicalized party that controls New York and Los Angeles will soon have control of the federal government.

The United States, the largest oil and gas producer in the world, is in a position to become a first mover. As President-elect Joe Biden moves to rejoin the Paris Agreement … he will also have an opportunity to put the country on a pathway to phasing out fossil fuels.

They don’t plan to replace fossil fuels with nuclear energy, but with wind and solar, which are capable of meeting only a tiny fraction of our energy needs.

What they are talking about is limiting electricity and modern transportation to the point that these will be luxuries to be enjoyed on a regular basis only by the elite. The rest of us will live like serfs in the Middle Ages, a way of life that could only support a much smaller population.

The effect on the economy would be total collapse, resulting in the starvation of millions. To progressives, this is not a bug but a feature. Like fossil fuels, human beings emit CO2 and thereby make the weather warm. The fewer of us, the better.

An ideology more conspicuously insane and evil would be difficult to imagine.

Jennifer Granholm to Oversee Green Energy Boondoggles

Remember when Obama stimulated the economy and saved the planet by redirecting hundreds of $millions of taxpayer money to campaign donors via green energy boondoggles like Solyndra? Hold onto your wallets; we are in for more of the same. Former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm has been chosen to head the Department of Energy.

This is great news for Democrat donors, less so for taxpayers.

Via the Wall Street Journal:

[D]uring her governorship from 2003 to 2011, Ms. Granholm handed out hundreds of millions of dollars to politically favored startups to create “green jobs.”

For example,

fledgling electric-car battery manufacturer A123 Systems, which was awarded a $249 million DOE grant plus $125 million in state tax credits. Plagued by manufacturing problems, A123 went bankrupt in 2012. China’s Wanxiang Group bought most of its assets.

Granholm + Biden = plenty more of this:

Fisker Automotive … went bust in 2013 after receiving a $192 million DOE loan with the goal of manufacturing a hybrid at a plant located in Mr. Biden’s senatorial backyard. Fisker was backed by prominent liberal investors including Al Gore. “Lobbying by all local politicians is said to have won the day for the Wilmington plant,” the Washington Post reported in 2013.

In the green energy sector, you don’t need to provide a useful product. You just need to have the right friends.

Granholm also offered battery manufacturer LG Chem $125 million on top of the $150 million in federal stimulus dollars it received. While LG Chem is still in business, its employees at the time were caught watching movies and playing games on the clock because they ostensibly had little productive to do.

One of the benefits of “green jobs” is that if you can snag one of these rare positions, you might not have to do any work.

Then there was the biofuels startup Mascoma, which was awarded $20 million from Ms. Granholm and up to $100 million from DOE for a plant to convert biomass into cellulosic ethanol. The plant was never built. Ms. Granholm also approved $100 million for a renewable energy park that was scrapped.

What a tragedy that they never built the biomass plant. Think of the polar bears we could save by mandating that cars run on weeds (people should run on weeds too).

And don’t forget her dim solar-energy bets including United Solar Ovonic, Evergreen and GlobalWatt. According to the Mackinac Center, the Michigan think tank, only 2.3% of Ms. Granholm’s investments in the state’s main incentive program met their job creation promises.

With a record that stellar, they should have made her Green Jobs Czar, the position held by current CNN propagandist Van Jones under Obama.

Government is a lousy venture capitalist and, more often than not, misallocates scarce capital.

This is due not only to incompetence, but to a different objective. Real venture capitalists expect businesses to produce wealth. Bureaucratic venture capitalists are motivated by ideology and graft. A percentage of subsidies will come back as political donations, as with Planned Parenthood.

Investors these days are piling into electric-car and battery start-ups, betting on government subsidies and tougher emission rules by the Biden Administration that will force-feed electric vehicles. Startups received both during the Obama Administration but still failed because of technical problems and scarce demand.

The demand problem is easy enough to fix. Democrats will just regulate energy-efficient cars out of existence so that we have to buy the electric ones or go without.

Granholm is infamous for her sharp elbows and flakiness, but she may not be the nuttiest slice of the impending fruitcake administration:

Biden has also tapped North Carolina environmental regulator Michael Regan for EPA Administrator. Progressives are praising Mr. Biden’s choice of a black American after lobbying hard against California Air Resources Board director Mary Nichols because she was insufficiently concerned with “environmental injustice.”

Better find a piece of leather to bite down on. Whatever environmental justice might mean, it is guaranteed to hurt.

WSJ aptly sums up the policies likely to be inflicted in the coming years under the pretense of controlling the climate: “more subsidies for the politically connected, and more rules, mandates and taxes for everyone else.”

How Serious Is Asia About Green Energy Foolishness?

Meanwhile, as Biden’s handlers prepare to crush America’s capacity to produce energy in the name of lunatic ideology, China marches onward toward economic dominance.

Via Global Warming Policy Forum:

Chinese state-owned utilities are betting on coal’s longevity by building new coal-fired power plants, with their fleets set to expand about 10% by 2025. Just last year, China opened the $30 billion Haoji Railway line, a 2,000-kilometer (1,243-mile) conduit to haul 200 million tons of coal a year directly from central mining basins to energy-hungry regions in the southeast.

Xi Jinping says China will be carbon neutral by 2060. Does anyone other than John Kerry believe him?

Meanwhile, regarding the hideous, inefficient, bird-chopping wind turbines that leftists pretend can replace fossil fuels, Japan is backing away:

The government said Thursday it will remove the two remaining wind power turbines it installed off Fukushima Prefecture citing lack of profit in the project, which cost ¥60 billion ($580 million).

Japan will supposedly be carbon neutral by 2050. That isn’t going to happen either.

Nor is it going to happen in any country. Advanced economies need energy, and for the foreseeable future, much of it will come from fossil fuels.

Countries like Democrats want to reduce America to through the Green New Deal also produce carbon emissions, in the form of peasants burning dung in an attempt to keep warm.

In the meantime, Biden’s handlers should be able to funnel many $billions of taxpayer money to campaign donors through green energy boondoggles like Solyndra, as Obama did.

Two Words Debunk the Global Warming Hoax

The two words that debunk the global warming hoax are “nuclear energy.” It is abundant, clean, and safe. It solves all of the problems created by fossil fuels, whether real or imaginary. It is not only vastly more affordable, but vastly easier on the environment than the solar and wind energy coercively subsidized by leftists. Yet global warming jihadists oppose it.

Anyone who claims to be concerned about the environment yet who opposes nuclear energy is full of — as Michael Shellenberger tactfully puts it — hot air:

Biden Is Lying, Has Repeatedly Opposed Fracking

The good news is that in the debate last night, Joe Biden vehemently denied that he opposes the energy production that is the lifeblood of the economy. The bad news is that, as usual, he was lying.

Of all the insolently brazen lies Biden told last night, “I never said I oppose fracking” was among the easiest to disprove.

Via the Blaze:

Trump reacted by saying, “You said it on tape.”

Biden responded, “Show the tape, put it on your website.”

“I’ll put it on,” Trump declared.

Another promise kept by Trump:

By the time Thursday night’s presidential debate had ended, the Trump campaign released a video compilation of Biden and running mate Sen. Kamala Harris (Calif.) making remarks opposing fracking. By Friday morning, the video had over 10 million views and over 325,000 Likes.

Here you go, Joe:

You know Biden’s compulsive lying has gotten out of hand when even CNN calls him on it:

CNN did a fact check on Biden’s history of fracking comments and admitted: “Biden falsely claims he never opposed fracking.”

Fortunately, we do not yet live in a dictatorship where an insane or treasonous president can destroy the economy by unilaterally banning all efficient energy production.

Despite several Democrats promising to ban fracking, including Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Kamala Harris, the president can not issue an outright ban on fracking across the United States.

However, they can repress this highly beneficial practice via hyperregulation and a ban on federal land. After they have packed the Supreme Court — an option Biden explicitly leaves open — anything is possible.

Despite his self-praising rhetoric, Biden conspicuously does not best Trump in character. The only reason to vote for him would be policy preference. His election would mean people can be manipulated into preferring economic stagnation at best (and a genuine depression if not absolute economic collapse if Democrats inflict their Green New Deal promises) to a return to the vibrant economy we had under Trump before the ChiCom virus hit. The leftists running the establishment media and Big Tech might be that powerful.

Religion of Green

California cannot keep the lights on, unable to meet its energy needs due to green energy policies fancifully intended to alter the world climate. Governor Gavin Newsom responds to this alarming situation by announcing a ban on nonelectric vehicles with the same chimerical intention. This underscores that global warming zealots are not grounded in reality. Their creed is not so much an ideology as a false religion, comprised of fear, doctrine, superstition, apocalypse, and a priesthood. However, its objectives are ideological: authoritarian world government and the reduction of the human race.

What’s Wrong With Unobtanium?

Other than the gargantuan expense, the two main reasons we cannot rely on wind and solar are (1) they will never be capable of meeting our energy needs; and (2) they are harmful to the environment, the machines for collecting renewable energy being manufactured of nonrenewable materials.

Mark Mills of the Manhattan Institute has the numbers:

So that’s why wind and solar still only provide only 3% of the world’s energy, after 20 years of fevered research and $billions wasted on subsidies.

Renewable energy is a ruse. The purpose is not to keep the lights on or even to fight pollution, but to virtue signal and to funnel money from taxpayers to Democrat donors.

California Blackouts Presage Green Energy Future

It’s not as if Democrats want to take a chance on green energy, as if maybe it will work. They already know what will happen if we are forced to rely on it. It is already happening, right in front of everyone in California:

Millions of Californians have lost power in recent days amid a brutal heat wave, and state regulators warn of more outages in the days and perhaps years to come.

Democrats reflexively scapegoat the power companies, which have been hamstrung by hyperregulation and ideologically driven green energy mandates to the point that they are no longer able to keep the lights on.

California’s Independent System Operator (Caiso) has been warning for years that the state’s increasing dependence on intermittent renewables, especially solar, is making it harder to ensure reliable power. Renewables currently make up about 36% of California’s electric generation, and Democrats have set a 60% mandate for 2030 and 100% for 2045.

Absent some revolutionary scientific breakthrough that probably won’t happen, there is no possibility that green energy can meet 100% of California’s power needs. It can’t even handle 36%.

Caiso in part blamed cloud cover, weak winds and failures at a couple of power plants for this weekend’s power outages.

Society cannot function if there is only a reliable power source when it is sunny out and the wind is blowing.

California is forced by its own moonbattery to import power from other states. But during a heatwave, and with green energy lunacy metastasizing throughout the country, other states won’t always have enough to spare.

[Governor Gavin] Newsom on Monday waived the state’s emissions standards to allow businesses and utilities to run fossil-fuel generators, many procured for emergency power outages during wildfire seasons.

This proves Newsom knows that reliable power does not come from solar panels, wind turbines, or pixie dust. Yet California continues to shut down clean and efficient natural gas and nuclear plants out of sheer moonbattery.

Even now, Newsom proclaims that single-party California remains “committed to radically changing the way we produce and consume energy.”

Power to keep the lights on takes a back seat to the power they will have over us if they can impose the Green New Deal. Get used to sweltering in the dark if Democrats prevail.
