Catholic University Bans Catholic Group for Being Catholic

Political correctness is all about piling one absurdity atop another. I wonder what they will come up with to pile atop this:

Gonzaga University will not allow students to organize a Knights of Columbus chapter because the group only admits Catholics — a violation of the school’s non-discrimination policy.

Gonzaga, a Roman Catholic university in Spokane, Wash., had concerns over a requirement that “all members of a student Knights of Columbus group must be Catholic.”

Using the same criteria, educrats might ban the baseball team for not including people who don’t play baseball.

Among our most fundamental natural rights is freedom of association. But this right has not been honored in the erstwhile Land of the Free since the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was imposed.

christianity banned
What this is actually about.

Until they demand that a pro-abortion group admit people that are against abortion, or force the local NAACP or Black ‘whatever’ Organization to admit KKK and Aryan Nation member, then this is nothing more that discrimination.

Their educrats all need to be excommunicated

  4. Wilberforce says:

“Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with “social” religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity, which does not need a “religious crutch.”

They have a Womens’ Studies program.

And so this begs the question….

What about the Muslim Students Association at Gonzaga??????

  7. Ghost of FA Hayek says:

Just checking to see if everyone now understands how exactly the church became infiltrated with gay pedophile priests.
Their universities and seminaries are infested with liberals.

    This begs the age-old questioni…
    “Is the Pope Catholic?”

Maybe, maybe not. I guess he doesn’t have to be after all.

  9. TED says:

    Bet they allow the new

    Religious Cult

  10. TED says:

Thatcher said Mexicans will be the ruin of America, apparently it will be the ruin of the Catholics to.

  11. Let’s not confuse the right of assembly and free association that the government must allow with the directives of a private organization. IF this were a state university the civil rights issue might have some merit. But as a private institution, one students freely associated with, they can have this policy.

That said, it does seem a bit ridiculous for a Catholic University to ban a Catholic organization. I do applaud them their commitment to non-discrimination, even if it is a little extreme in this instance.

  12. StanInTexas says:

Paul DeBaufer, read the first comment in the thread. Now tell me, will Gonzaga close does the Muslim Students Association if they refuse to accept Jews and Christians into their organization and leadership?

  13. Comrade J says:

Let’s not confuse a Christian organization with a PC one.

Let’s also not fall for an illogical and irrational myth of “non-discrimination”. There is no such thing. Someone, like the Catholic group in this instance, is always discriminated against.

  14. Stanin Texas, Under their policy they would have to. It is their policy for good or ill and violates no one’s rights as they are a private institution. It would be a completely different story if they were a state school.

Do they have a Muslim Student Association? A NAACP chapter on campus? Do these organizations not allow diversity? Or are these moot points?

  15. StanInTexas says:

Yes, Paul, there is a Muslim Student Association at Gonzaga. You will notice that there are no attacks on them. What are the chances that the Muslim group is “all inclusive” as the university is demanding the Catholics to be?

  16. Winston Smith says:

The Catholics should joing the Muslim Student Association at Garbonzobean U and bring bacon and ham sandwiches to munch on while praying to Jesus. Jesus is part of Islam too. LOL!

  17. Winston Smith says:

Is the Pope Catholic? No, hes Franciscan. LOL!

  18. Doug says:

Winston, the women should wear string bikinis and the guys (or girls for that matter) with CCW permits should carry and announce it to the Muzzies and watch the liberal kaniption fits ensue.

  19. Doug says:

But then Gogonzola U campus is probably a ‘gun free zone.”

That’s your opinion. What this really is, and in Gonzaga’s case, is active attempts to discriminate against Christians by Marxist students who are allowed too much free reign in governing student groups. There has been litigation in this area of discrimination against religious groups being able to select religious leaders on campus, and plaintiffs have won. It’s usually aethistic liberal students rooted in the student government who start discriminating against Christian clubs, and the university adults are sometimes hands off, until they get sued. For instance Rutgers caved and now allows students to organize a Christian fellowship on Rutgers’ campus in a manner consistent with the purposes of their freedom to associate on the basis of their shared beliefs.
Princeton University has recognized a Christian student group that had been arbitrarily denied official recognition. After FIRE wrote to Princeton on behalf of the student group to remind the school of its commitments to freedom of religion and association, the university quickly moved to restore the group’s rights and to recognize the group on an equal basis with other student organizations. Princeton also pledged to re-examine a policy that unfairly singles out religious student organizations for additional and exceptional scrutiny.

Gonzaga should be next to be sued by the Fire. It’s not the first time Christian groups have been banned by the student led BSA, sans any adult supervision.

Two Christian student groups, The Christian Legal Society and The Christian Pro-Life Caucus, failed to gain recognition from Gonzaga Law School’s Student Bar Association (SBA). The Christian Pro-Life Law Caucus was rejected as an official student group last fall, when SBA president Albert Guadagno declared that the Christian group’s requirement that its leadership be Christian was “discriminatory.” Gonzaga University’s president, Father Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., failed to intervene on behalf of either group despite Gonzaga Law’s promise to be a “welcoming environment for students of all religious backgrounds or secular moral traditions.”
    What a crock of BS.

Dave, the Mets tried that for a few years. Didn’t work.

  22. Sam Adams says:

The Muslim Student Association claims that they admit everyone into their organization. They further claim that their organization must be run according to the Koran and Islamic law. Therefore, the best way to approach them would be for a militant Christian woman to run for the office of president of that organization.

Obviously Gonzaga can set up any rules for clubs that they want, being a private organization. For them to ban a Catholic Club seems silly, but it is in accordance with their bylaws.

Those on the left have decided that discrimination is the worst of all sins (unless of course it is the kind of discrimination they agree with). Any club is free to keep white men out.

    Paul Debaufer
Banning groups is not inclusive. If one must discriminate in order to claim this mantle of non discrimination…………….
