Chicago Might Start $1,000/Month Handouts

Let’s see, what could we do to render Chicago even more dysfunctional and therefore even more certain to elect only Democrats, in accordance with the principle of the Democrat Death Spiral? I know: hand people $1,000 of other people’s money as a reward for nothing:

Some Chicago families could start collecting a $1,000 check every month with no strings attached. That’s the new proposal from a task force created by Mayor Emanuel.

The idea is to break the cycle of poverty. The pilot program would give 1,000 struggling Chicagoans $1,000 a month.

As George Orwell might say, “Some ideas are so stupid that only intellectuals believe them.” Trying to break the cycle of poverty by subsidizing poverty is one of those ideas.

Then again, whether this idea is stupid depends on the desired outcome.

To get less of something, tax it. To get more of something, subsidize it. Big Government taxes work and subsidizes indolence. This results in poverty, social disintegration, and government dependence. Only one group benefits from these inevitable consequences: Democrat bureaucrats of the type running Chicago, who are assured of a steady source of votes.

So maybe this is not such a stupid idea after all — so long as they expect votes but not gratitude.
