Colorado Abolishes Free Speech Zones

Some good may actually be coming of the recent fad among progressives of employing Naziesque mob violence tactics to silence voices they don’t want to hear. A light has been shined on the authoritarian restrictions on free speech that prevail at universities. The attention will not be welcomed by moonbats. Colorado just abolished free speech zones on public college campuses:

The legislation, Colorado Senate Bill 62, prohibits the state’s public universities from establishing unreasonable speech restrictions. The initiative received bipartisan support in the Colorado legislature and still allows public universities to impose “reasonable time, manner, and place” speech policies.

“Once we limit free speech to a zone, we indicate to our students that free speech does not exist anywhere beyond that zone. That is not the message we want to send to future generations about our core values,” Colorado state Sen. Tim Neville, a co-sponsor of the bill said.

To confine free speech to specified zones is to deny that America itself is a free speech zone. That even some Democrats acknowledge this is an encouraging sign.

This is the real free speech zone.

    “unreasonable speech restrictions”

    Any restriction is unreasonable

Funny how the YAL protects American civil liberties while the ACLU attacks them in deference to illegal aliens as they proudly proclaim “The fundamental constitutional protections of due process and equal protection embodied in our Constitution and Bill of Rights apply to every person, regardless of immigration status.”

I’m sure you meant with the exceptions of:

    ● Incitement to imminent violent action (death threats)
    ● False statements of fact
    ● Obscenity
    ● Child pornography
    ● Speech owned by others
    ● Commercial speech (not misleading or fraudulent)

You are free to make false statements of fact. There is no law that prohibits it.
The liberals have been telling us for years that obscenity is covered by the first amendment.
Child pornography….yep; that will get you thrown in prison.
Speech owned by others….no criminal penalties, and pretty weak civil penalties….especially if you are a politician.
Commercial speech…..misleading or fraudulent…….makes me wonder why Hillary Clinton is walking around a free woman….

  5. Mr. Freemarket says:

I’m also pretty sure that the ACLU is not aware of the existence of the second amendment as it pertains to civil rights.

No law against them, but they are not protected speech:

In United States constitutional law, false statements of fact are an exception from protection of free speech under the First Amendment. In United States law, a false statement of fact will not be exempt from some civil or criminal penalty, if a law has imposed one. This exception has evolved over time from a series of Supreme Court cases that dealt with issues such as libel, slander, and statutes which barred fraudulent solicitation of charitable donations.

The Supreme Court has never interpreted freedom of speech to include obscenity, which is generally considered to fall outside the protection of the First Amendment. But the debate over what constitutes obscenity and how it should be regulated has long troubled Americans.
