Detroit Goes Dark

Nothing could be more emblematic of the contrast between leftism and liberty than this famous night view of the Korean peninsula:

Detroit — America’s most liberal city — is close on North Korea’s heels:

Detroit, whose 139 square miles contain 60 percent fewer residents than in 1950, will try to nudge them into a smaller living space by eliminating almost half its streetlights.

“To nudge” — liberalese for “to corral” — is a favorite term of Comrade Obama’s Regulatory Czar Cass Sunstein.

As it is, 40 percent of the 88,000 streetlights are broken and the city, whose finances are to be overseen by an appointed board, can’t afford to fix them. Mayor Dave Bing’s plan would create an authority to borrow $160 million to upgrade and reduce the number of streetlights to 46,000. … It would leave sparsely populated swaths unlit in a community of 713,000 that covers more area than Boston, Buffalo and San Francisco combined. Vacant property and parks account for 37 square miles (96 square kilometers), according to city planners.

“You have to identify those neighborhoods where you want to concentrate your population,” said Chris Brown, Detroit’s chief operating officer. “We’re not going to light distressed areas like we light other areas.”

Cue up “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns N Roses.

Before it was destroyed by labor unions and an overwhelmingly Democrat demographic, Detroit was a great city, the fifth largest in the country.

The triumph of moonbattery is the triumph of darkness.

I was born in Detroit in 1939 and lived on Central between Vernor and Dix. It was a great neighborhood as there were many different ethnic groups there, Polish, Romanian, Hungarian that got along well. Most were probably Ford Workers at the Rouge plant. I went back there many years ago and there wasn’t even a front door on the flat my folks and I lived it. So sad but Detroit pretty much got what it voted in. One mayor, Coleman Young lived in the Manoogian Mansion (aka the Boogying Mansion. Will the last person to leave Detroit please turn off the light.

  9. Aridog says:

Although it is true that the city will be turning off more lights, the fact is that they’ve been effectively doing it for 3-4 years now. Certainly isn’t news now. I drive in the city frequently, on surface streets, and lights out has been the standard for years. Detroit is trying, due to outside major investors, to recover, but success is far, very far, from assured … 30 years of corruption left shambles still visible today. The previous mayor just got out of prison and is facing multiple federal charges as we speak, along with family and friends.

The full article mentions a stretch of West Grand Blvd as scheduled to go dark…that’s funny, it has been totally dark, not a signle street light, for 3+ years already. Funnier yet is the fact that the W Grand Blvd areas are is adjacent to the “mid-town” area, where the Michigan State offices are, as well as a major hospital and multiple old mansions.

How long before San Francisco follows to become the next “Model City?”

  11. Aridog says:

Yep, Detroit is probably the most segregated city in the USA, more black than anything else. The newest problem, seldom trumpeted, or phenomena if you will, is the migration of professional and working class black families to the far suburbs … in numbers approaching “en’ mass.”

What will be left, with barrier islands of professional whites and blacks who get along fine together in the city center, with incomes of $100k+, will be nothing but those who can’t work, won’t work, with educations that leave many of them illiterate.

    In other words, Obama country.

  12. chuck in st paul says:

The UAW killed Detroit. When hubcap hangers make $100,000 a year you know something’s not right. When GM has thousands of people sitting on their butts watching TV and reading books while pulling down a paycheck because their jobs became redundant you know some of the cause. The Obysmal bails out the union with billions of dollars of tax money. So the stupidity keeps going on.

    Mickey Shea,

Africa at its worst was much more civilized than Detroit.

  14. bobdog says:

Am I the only one that noticed that the city plans to borrow $150 million dollars to repair what, 32,000 street lights. That works out to $5,000 each.

Those must be some hellaciously expensive light bulbs.
But maybe they’re being forced to use those stupid CFC bulbs. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt.

I bet if you seriously dug into the proposal, you’d see that about $120 million of that money is going to other stuff. Like legislative pensions, maybe.

  15. born in 76 says:

Yep, another $160,000,000 drain from the rest of the State. Then they’ll tell us “Suburnites”(aka whites) to go fuck ourselves when we want some input on how to help fix the city. We have to hear how it’s their(africans)city and they’ll burn it down before they take any advice(sure like that $$$ though) from the suburbs.

    1 example of many:

  16. Boo Radley says:

Only government would borrow money to reduce the number of lights. Sadly, it would surprise no one if they upgrade lights that they intend to eliminate.

  17. Son of Taz says:

Hey Detroit moonbats – Mass is going to put up a whole bunch of windmills in Nantucket Harbor, thanks to our governor, Cadillac Duval Patrick. The Kerrys, Kennedys and other elite snots don’t want them spoiling their view of the hah bah.

So, tell you what – bring you guns and knives here, stick up the construction crew and take the damn things to Detroit. Put ’em up near city hall, where there’s enough hot air to make them spin like a window fan and generate enough power to run the curly fluorescent lights the Washington morons are inflicting on the rest of us.

Seems like a plan to me.

  18. Gary C. says:

Detroit’s demise isn’t directly the result of liberal policies. It is more so a result of the blacks that have infested it. To deny that simple fact is disingenuous.

  19. Jimbo says:

For years now, particularly with the rising costs of energy, many cities time their street lights to be ‘off’ for about 10% of the time, with no more than one light within a given distance darkened at one once. (That ‘off’ time could actually be increased, but trial lawyers have a field day if a ‘victim’ is under a darkened street light.)

I guess my point is, there are technical engineering solutions that could solve their problems, but those solutions would be adverse to the ability of the communists in charge to do their social engineering.

The smart thing to do? “Will the last person to leave Detroit please turn out the last street light?” Give Detroit up for a Discovery Channel documentary ‘The World after Humans’. (What was the name of that show?)

Detroit’s demise isn’t directly the result of liberal policies. It is more so a result of the blacks that have infested it. To deny that simple fact is disingenuous.

Sorry; I believe you are incorrect. Union jobs lured people into Detroit for generations. Lazy people prefer union jobs, since there is little risk of losing your job by being non-productive. Further many union jobs were created during WWII by all the defense spending at the auto plants.

As more and more union workers flooded into Detroit, they voted for the party of the unions. And of course, public schools decreased in quality as teachers’ unions became more powerful. Then again, the race riots of 1943 and 1967, with the accompanying looting and burning of buildings convinced many who could leave to leave.

Those who voted conservative, those that worked hard, those that didn’t want union jobs left. And now we see what is left over.

  24. Noovuss says:

This is what 50 years of communist control gets you. Death and destruction is the end result of black ghetto populations selling themselves for a block of government cheese. This is Obongo’s base self destructing.

  25. Spider says:

“Detroit — America’s most liberal city — is close on North Korea’s heels:”

Wrong. N. Korea, unlike Detroit, is not controlled by violent black street gangs.

  26. Vic Kelley says:

I have more sympathy for the people living in North Korea. Detroit’s coloreds are happy with their chocolate city just like Ray Nagin’s coloreds are happy with New Orleans. What we call violence, street crime, drug use and trafficking, etc. is their culture. Gotta respect that. They want white people’s money of course to fix up things and to support themselves, but otherwise whites are to keep out.
