Fat Shaming: Political Correctness Erodes Public Health

Obesity is a serious health problem that leads to other still more serious health problems. The Mayo Clinic lists a few common complications:

• High triglycerides and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol
• Type 2 diabetes
• High blood pressure
• Metabolic syndrome — a combination of high blood sugar, high blood pressure, high triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol
• Heart disease
• Stroke
• Cancer, including cancer of the uterus, cervix, endometrium, ovaries, breast, colon, rectum, esophagus, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidney and prostate
• Breathing disorders, including sleep apnea, a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts
• Gallbladder disease
• Gynecological problems, such as infertility and irregular periods
• Erectile dysfunction and sexual health issues
• Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a condition in which fat builds up in the liver and can cause inflammation or scarring
• Osteoarthritis

Then there are the psychological complications:

• Depression
• Disability
• Sexual problems
• Shame and guilt
• Social isolation
• Lower work achievement

Obviously, your doctor has good reason to encourage you to keep your weight under control. However, this is now regarded as the thought crime of fat shaming:

According to psychology professor Joan Chrisler, “medical fat shaming” at the doctor’s office is “mentally and physically harmful.”

As strange as this sounds, Prof. Chrisler is not alone in making this claim. As ABC News reports, “The practice of fat shaming at the doctor’s office can be harmful to both the mental and physical health of a patient, according to a comprehensive new review of research published Thursday.” Chrisler and fellow Connecticut College researcher Angela Barney reviewed 46 past studies. They concluded, “Disrespectful treatment and medical fat shaming … is stressful and can cause patients to delay health care seeking or avoid interacting with providers.”

Disrespectful treatment by a doctor would obviously be unprofessional — unless you consider that these days any perceived microaggression is regarded as disrespectful.

The lowering of standards is inherent in political correctness. This applies even to our personal health standards:

Ironically, just last month, another study was released, indicating that, “Fewer overweight Americans have been trying to lose weight in recent years, and researchers wonder if fat acceptance could be among the reasons.”

As explained by the study’s lead author Dr. Jian Zhang, “Socially accepted normal body weight is shifting toward heavier weight. As more people around us are getting heavier, we simply believe we are fine, and no need to do anything with it.”

In utopia, no one will mind if you eat too much and don’t get enough exercise. However, as with transgenderism, biological reality does not disappear just because it is politically correct to ignore it. Diabetes and heart disease don’t care if they are insensitive.
