Federal Shutdown Spin

On behalf of the liberal media establishment, Newsweek does its part to exploit the federal shutdown with this headline:

SHUTDOWN: THREE PEOPLE DIE AS NATIONAL PARKS LEFT LARGELY UNPATROLLED

From the article:

Three people have died as a result of accidents in U.S. national parks since the shutdown began on December 22, reported the Washington Post.

We are instructed to blame Trump, who unlike Clinton and Obama let the parks stay open, leaving hapless visitors “almost entirely unsupervised.”

[A] 14-year-old girl fell to her death at Glen Canyon National Park in Arizona … a man fell into a river in California’s Yosemite National Park and died … high winds brought down a tree in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee. The tree fell onto a 42-year-old woman, killing her.

If only a park ranger had been there to leap in front of the tree and stop it from falling.

National Park Service spokesman Jeremy Barnum told the publication that seven deaths in total occurred in national parks since the shutdown, with four of those killed believed to have taken their own lives.

He said that on average, six people a week die in the national parks system…

The story is dated January 6; the shutdown began December 22. That means deaths per day have dropped from 0.86 to 0.44.

If Schumer were getting proper credit for his shutdown, the headline would have read,

SHUTDOWN: ONLY HALF AS MANY DIE IN NATIONAL PARKS

However, the whole point of the shutdown tactic is that after Democrats demand that they must have exactly their way without compromise or the government will shut down, the media can be counted on to blame Republicans.
