Fox News Reaps the Reward for Devoting Itself to Promoting Trump: Surpassed by CNN

Donald Trump is largely a creation of Fox News, which has promoted him relentlessly. It cannot be a coincidence that most of the big names at Fox — O’Reilly, Hannity, Van Susteren — are Trump supporters. Even the conflict with his supposed nemesis Megyn Kelly has the staged feel of a professional wrestling grudge. Evidently a corporate decision came down from the top to put all the chips on Trump. Here is how the strategy is working out so far:

CNN ranked #1 in cable news in prime time in April. CNN beat Fox News for the fifth time in the last eight months in M-Su prime time (four of the past eight in M-F prime) among adults 25-54. The last time CNN had this many prime time wins in an eight-month period versus Fox News was over 14 years ago (Nov. 2001).

Becoming Trump’s pompom squad has cost Fox News whatever credibility it once had. The bad taste it is leaving in people’s mouths will last far longer than Donald Trump’s political career.

Making Anderson Cooper look objective and unbiased is a huge challenge, but they pulled it off!

  2. Spleenicus says:

Fox has suffered from the curse of the wereweasel!

  3. Tostig says:

I think it’s a lot less of a conspiracy-esque thing than is suggested here. I doubt there’s any collusion between M. Kelly and Trump. As to Hannity et al, there too I doubt there was word from on high. I just think they (sans Kelly) like Trump, or find him interesting or good for ratings.

That said, our news watching here in my house has gone from 100.00 % Fox to probably 50 % Fox, 40 % MSNBC, 10 % CNN. We just can’t stand the all-Trump-all-the-time coverage, especially on Hannity, who I used to really like. Aside from its incessant pro-Trump coverage, the Hannity show has become a bore and basically unwatchable.

MSNBC is actually not bad … never thought I’d say that. They got rid of a lot of the social justice warrior programming and hired some half-decent analysts and commentators. I actually find it a pleasant break after killing neurons trying to watch TrumpNews. It seems, for lack of a better word, “objective” compared to TrumpNews.

When this is all over and Hillary’s in the White Hose, the bill is gonna come due for all those people who backed the carnival barker. From Hannity to Palin to Christie to Greta to all the others, they are going to be greatly diminished stature-wise and I bet we see a LOT of fresh, new faces at Fox after November, as it surveys the damage and tries to figure out how to put itself back together.

  4. Kevin R. says:

Here’s a funny video by Trump at his website. Click on the ISSUES tab at the top of his website and there you’ll find a host of the Trump issues videos. As you can see Trump thinks of himself as The Indispensable Man who somehow, he does not get into actual ideas, will unify the nation again. Pure pablum for the Teletubby mentality.

  5. The Head Jerk says:

Some folks aren’t too bright it seems …

“CNN has the strongest surge in ratings in the past 14 years and now
beats Fox News in the all important category of 25-54 year old
viewership. That age category drives the ad revenue determinations for
    the industry.

Fox News can’t say they were not warned this
would be an outcome of their insufferable decision to continue
promoting a media narrative in opposition to Donald Trump. The same
thing happened to Macys Department Store after they dropped Trump.

CNN also handily topped MSNBC this month in all dayparts, with CNN besting MSNBC for the 22nd straight
month in Total Day (among both total viewers and among adults 25-54)
and in prime time (among 25-54). In total viewers, CNN has now beaten
MSNBC for the fifth straight month (or seven out of eight months) in
prime time. CNN continued to top MSNBC by wide margins during the day
    (9am-4pm) – posting a +36% advantage in total viewers (630k vs. MSNBC’s
    464k) and +58% more among adults 25-54 (161k vs. 102k).

In April, CNN had the most growth of any television network (cable or
broadcast) among both total viewers and adults 25-54, increasing triple
digits in prime time. Among ALL cable networks in April, CNN ranked #7
in total viewers in M-F prime time. In Total Day, CNN was also up vs.
last year, increasing +59% in total viewers and +48% among adults
    25-54. (read more)

“Anecdotal evidence suggests a growing number of Fox viewers have been
angered at the cable outlet’s perceived move to the left the last couple
years, as well as its frequent criticisms of Republican presidential
primary front-runner Donald Trump,” wrote Cheryl Chumley on WND.
“(Megyn) Kelly, for example, came under public fire for her questioning
of Trump during an August debate on Fox about his past treatment of
women, and for the ensuing public spat that waged between her and the
    billionaire businessman for months.””

  6. Paul Kersey says:

I haven’t watched a single minute of Fox News in at least three months and do not plan on ever watching again. Hannity is particularly disgusting but I didn’t watch him anyway. My plan to survive Trump is to ignore TV news and talk radio altogether, except for Levin. If Trump is elected president (that looks so much more ominous in writing) then I’ll be on the wagon for a while.

  7. Mr. Freemarket says:

I wouldn’t watch MSNBC if they were the last “news” program on TV.

  8. Mr. Freemarket says:

I guess this means that O’Really is no longer #1.

  9. kelmark.vw says:

This article stands on mounds of cow manure. If you looked at Fox you would see special report’s panel has never been a Trump fan. Megyn Kelly has had Trump on her hit list since the first debate. I have seen more reports of Fox’s demise is due to unfavorable reporting and negative Trump reporting.

  10. Justin Camp says:

    Trump 2016…

  11. livedwell says:

I disagree with this article. From the time Trump thought he might run Fox started vilifying him every chance it got. All pundits in on it save Hannity and a few others. They certainly were not for Donald Trump any way shape or form.

  12. Pearl Nardini says:

I, for one, quit watching Fox. Every time I turned it on there was Trump saying how great he is, how everybody loves him. Either he was bragging on himself or he was berating someone; name calling, threats and insults became the norm and who wants to listen to that?
Trump has a problem. He needs therapy. But, the Fox media are nuts about him.

  13. Billy Gjr says:

You know, it’s bad enougb when the main moderators are in the tank for Trump. But then they bring on additional supporters like Huckabee, Geraldo, Giuliani, Herman Cain, Boling, Tanteros, to eviscerate Cruz. You notice they bring out anti-Cruz folks to address Cruz positions (negatively) and pro-Trump folks to deal with his positions. So it’s almost 100% pro Trump most of the time. They have lost ALL objectivity. May as well use the slogan “Partial & Imbalanced” rather than “Fair & Balanced”.

  14. burgess says:

I want to see O’Reilly standing on the corner next to Dan Rather trying to peddle some “news.”

  16. zlittle says:

I never in my life thought I would see a time when the media elects a President, based on their bottom line. But the saddest part is the millions of people stupid enough to believe them.

  17. Mac in Texas says:

fox network’s obvious support and promotion of Donald j trump is shameless and I hope their market share/ratings continues its downward slide towards bankruptcy.

  18. Mac in Texas says:

    trump’ler is a habitual liar!

  19. Alphamail says:

More than any other network, MSNBC has worked extremely hard over the last decade to help change the culture, alter the values of an entire generation, highlight racial issues, pinpoint the efforts of Conservative politicians, and tackle controversial issues like the Second Amendment, immigration, and Obamacare……………all in the most destructive, malicious, uncompromising, and seditious manner possible, so they’ve earned my permanent disdain – I will never watch them again either.

  20. Colonel_Bob says:

Trump is such an egomaniac that he cannot admit losing at anything.

It is always these lame excuses. It is rigged. They’re against me.

Face it Donald. You lost. Admit it. Or won’t your skyscraper sized ego allow for it?

  21. Alphamail says:

Everyone else’s fault but yours – that’s certainly fair and balanced.

  22. Colonel_Bob says:

Tune in at the top of any hour during the week and tell me if the first story they lead with involves Trump.

If I say it clearly and slowly it will be so… No idea how I will make that happen, but the Trumpkins believe me.

  26. NC Ken says:

I can’t believe I’m saying this but CNN has actually had some people on their programs who actually make some sense and at least ask somewhat tough questions. Whoever turns out the lights at Target can just do the same at Fox News.

  28. Mark Cantu says:

Funny, I use to watch Fox from 5 to 10 pm..or at least had it on for I don’t know, many, many, years. I may watch the beginning of Meghan Kelly now. Also, I quit listening to Rush, Gallagher, and Hannity on the radio. I figured these guys sold out to Trump for an invitation to a swanky Manhattan cocktail party and a free golf outing. The good thing? I am listening to a lot more classical music on the radio and I discovered that television had gotten a lot better with Netflix, and my Libertarian roots are making a come back! Finally, I see that Ayn Rand predicted everything in her book, Atlas Shrugged!

  29. FreemenRtrue says:

I quit watching Fox Snooze when they went all in for Rubio. When he collapsed I wathed anew and was dumbfounded at the Trump Thumping. Its all Trump all the time. I do not watch Fox News anymore. Murdoch is calling the shots. Ailes is just a flunky. Is Mudrock trying to insure a DemonicRat victory? That’s the only question I have.

  30. Jake Sarna says:

I agree with you a thousand percent. Mark Levin is the only person I listen to now. A true constitutional conservative, who isn’t afraid if anyone and nothing comes between Levin and his values and principles. The funny thing is, Trump Is completely opposite of what I wrote about Levin. Trump is a lifelong flaming liberal, who gave a ton of money to schumer, pelosi, Harry Reid, Hillary, Obama 08 campaign, Bill de’blasio. And yeah he did give some republicans donations but the worst of the worst like flaming establishment types eric cantor, John Boehner, and of course Mitch McConnell. He actually stepped in when Mitch was down in Kentucky midterms against conservative Matt Bevin. And at the time trump called conservatives and tea party activists ‘the most dangerous people in America’. And now Fox is daily calling Cruz establishment and trump anti establishment. They decided that voters were so angry at the establishment, that they were gonna dupe the republican base again, so the establishment starting calling themselves anti establishment, and now they call guys like Cruz establishment. But go to YouTube, watch the last few years of Fox talking about Cruz, before this election primary, they for years called Cruz nothing but an anti establishment warrior who leads the tea party. We cannot forgive Fox ever! I was a loyal viewer for years, but I want trump to be their deathblow for f-ing us over again, the second time.

  31. bronx says:

I cut the card with cable news after the first republican debate. Now since then I cut my viewership at The Drudge Report and Breitbart.

  32. bronx says:

I call bullsh*t. Your “PARROTING” liberal democrat talking points. All the courts have rules in Lion Cruz favor of him being a United States citizen.

Please stop with the liberal democrat talking points not unless your a liberal democrat.

    What say you…?

  33. bronx says:

STOP SHOUTING…your parents can’t hear the TV up stairs because of your SHOUTING.

  34. Timely Manner says:

Most Trump supporters QUIT Fox because of the constant coverage — constant negative coverage and misconstruing him almost every time. Their rating are down, down, down (just as are Rush’s, Beck’s, Levins) BECAUSE OF Trump supporters, who were their mainstay audience for years, said enough with the framing of Trump. This article here today is gas lighting and not reality. C’mon, Dave. Surely you remember the battles between Trump and Fox News? Not doing the debate? That was not about any lovefest by Fox for Trump.

  35. areweallmad says:

And you’re voting for an ESTABLISHMENT LIBERAL who can’t beat Hillary? Really? Are you that stupid? A vote for Trump is a vote for Hillary. WAKE UP & quit drinking the Kool aide.

  36. areweallmad says:

I was a Fox news junkie all the way back to about 2004. I quit watching them when they went all Trump ALL THE TIME. I don’t know where either you or kelmark get the idea that Fox is being negative toward Trump. I have never seen a candidate get as much FREE air time as Trump. It’s beyond ridiculous. I’m glad their ratings are down & I hope to see them file for bankruptcy, which they deserve for trying to pick the candidate. As for Megan Kelly, what the hell was she doing sneaking into trump tower the other day? I call BS on that whole controversy. That was just for ratings & look where it got them–in the tank where they all belong.

  37. areweallmad says:

BRAVO. I will never watch Fox again. I said the same thing about CNN way back on 2003 & I’ve never been back to them either. Hope they all fail.

  38. areweallmad says:

The conservative tree house is a pro-trump site. FYI.

  39. AynRandWasRight says:

What you describe is VERY similar to my experience! Except that I’ve already read AS 3 times…so no need to do that. But I generally had it on for the 3 hour block beginning with O’Reilly (even though I’ve always seen him as somewhat phony, he is entertaining), through Kelly and Hannity. I always regarded Hannity as somewhat of a simpleton – but I thought he was coming from the right place and was a reliable conservative.

I haven’t done the Netflix thing – can’t watch TV on a computer, I don’t know why. But I, too am listening to a lot more Rachmaninoff, Mahler and Haydn these days. YouTube is pretty amazing!

What surprises me is how many of these people – and you can add Eric Bolling and that vile Judge Jenneane person to your list – actually think Donald Trump is their friend. He goes to a ball game with O’Reilly, yucks it up with Hannity, has lunch with this one or that, and they actually believe he’s their buddy! Drumpf has no buddies who can’t do anything for him. If Bill O’Reilly TV personality was Bill O’Connor TV repairman Drumpf wouldn’t give him the time of day. Media people, pols, celebrities….they can help him so he schmoozes them. That they don’t see this is pathetic.

  40. AynRandWasRight says:

Didn’t they tell you in the GED Study Kit that ALL CAPS is considered bad internet manners?

  41. AynRandWasRight says:

“I love the poorly educated” – Donald J. Drumpf

  42. PeopleSuck says:

I agree with you to an extent. Fox was for Rubio before they went full Trump.

  43. Detfan1 says:

The last thing I watched on Fox was Kelly, and I just stopped recording her show. I haven’t migrated to CNN, though. I am now almost exclusively an internet news guy, scrolling through SocialNewsWatch, RedState, Right Stuff, The Resurgent, etc.

  44. wlynnp says:

you seriously need to take a pill.

  45. Laurel says:

You can do Netflix on your tv with a Roku…along with a whole lot of other channels. Literally thousands. Roku is a streaming device. If you have Amazon Prime you can also stream it through your Roku or you can get a Prime Stix which is the Amazon version of a Roku.

I cut the cord and it was the best thing I ahve ever done. I still get to watch the things I like but also have found a lot of things I like that I didn’t know existed.

If you are an Apple user all of the above is equivalent to Apple TV.

  46. Skor says:

Total Truth. I go to CNN first now because of the whole way Fox has turned into Trump’s super pac.

  47. For Freedom First. says:

We also had Fox on continuously from 5 till 10. No more. Turned off on five from Eric Bolling/Guilfoyle pushing Trump. I believe Hannity is aware of the damage he has done to his credibility. He had a one hour with Ted Cruz and he was almost impartial. His technique is to give Ted a chance to respond to Trump’s lies, and further spreads these lies. That may be the best we will ever get (grudgingly) for Hannity. I no longer watch Hannity unless he has Ted on. I no longer listen to Hannity or Ingraham, no longer follow Breitbart or Drudge (Drudge was my Home page previously). I still record Megyn, but I end up watching 1 out of 4. Oh how the mighty have fallen. Fox has managed to tick off the Trumpsters and Cruz supporters by abandoning their Balance.

  48. Skor says:

You’re on crack. Fox is in the tank for Trump.

  49. Warmongerel says:

So, as in the past, people now have nowhere on TV that they can go to hear real Conservative ideas. Sad. Very sad.

  50. Warmongerel says:

You can also stream Netflix to your TV through a laptop or a gaming console. I stream it through my daughter’s old Nintendo Wii.

  51. Warmongerel says:

Why is it that all Whinin’ Donald supporters in comment sections have to be smug, nasty little people? There’s never any debate or point to be had. It’s just name calling and condescension.

It’s just like watching Liberals in any given comment section. There is NO difference. It’s just as tedious. There’s a reason that a lot of people think that Trump’s supporters are morons.

  52. Warmongerel says:

Are you seriously disparaging something as not being [[WELL WRITTEN]] after puking up that putrid word salad of bad grammar, punctuation and ALL CAPS? My kid wrote better than that when she was 8.

Before this past year, it was only Liberals that I saw calling other people stupid with horribly written screeching screeds that made little sense and bounced from subject to subject like an ADHD-afflicted squirrel on crack.

I honestly have to wonder if the number of Liberals who support Whinin’ Donald isn’t being grossly under-reported. The writing style has to be more than a coincidence.

  53. Guido__Curlybone says:

I don’t watch any of them, never have, but it seems like most of the decent clips I see online this season are from MSLSD of all places. I’ve never liked Fox News after my dad always had OReilly on whenever I would come over. That arrogant prick turned me off to the whole network.

  54. Guido__Curlybone says:

I don’t think most of them even realize they followed the pied piper back to liberal land. They’re way too emotionally attached to see reason and take any truth about the lousiness of trump as a personal insult.
