More Woke Astronomy

As noted earlier, political correctness is a totalitarian ideology whose adherents demand that absolutely everything be subordinated to it, including astrophysics. Progressives have their work cut out for them, but they are progressing.

The Heising-Simons Foundation launched a postdoctoral fellowship to develop talent in planetary astronomy. Only two of the first 12 awardees were female. According to the prevailing ideology, this could not possibly be because men are more likely to excel in this field. It could only be a consequence of patriarchal oppression.

Science Magazine reports:

That low ratio sent shock waves through the small family charity, which is based in Los Altos, California. “We realized we needed to self-reflect before we went any further,” says the foundation’s Cyndi Atherton.

The established solution to imaginary discrimination is to impose real discrimination. For that, Joyce Yen was brought in from the University of Washington.

Atherton and Yen spent 1 year revamping the process by which young scientists applied and were chosen for the 3-year, $375,000 fellowships. …

Atherton also hired Yen to lead the panels rather than using a scientist from the discipline. As facilitator, her role was to watch out for comments that might bias the process by straying from the stated criteria for selection.

Let’s not get distracted with irrelevant science stuff when the purpose of astrophysics is to destroy the patriarchy.

The changes had the desired effect: Four of the six fellows in this year’s class are women.

Success! But… how many of the fellows are persons of politically preferred pigmentation? How many are transgender? How many are undocumented immigrants? The work of social justice warriors is never finished.

As for the Final Frontier, it looks like the Russians and Chinese will have to be the pioneers. Americans have other priorities.
