Obama Regime Introduces the Nudge Squad

As envisioned, the government is supposed to represent the values, attitudes, and interests of the American population. But instead of bureaucrats being turned out of office for not thinking the way we do, we are to be reformed so as to conform to their viewpoint.

The federal government is hiring what it calls a “Behavioral Insights Team” that will look for ways to subtly influence people’s behavior, according to a document describing the program obtained by …

While the program is still in its early stages, the document shows the White House is already working on such projects with almost a dozen federal departments and agencies including the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Agriculture.

Money is no object; the victims pay for it. If we object, that will just be proof that we need more of what the Regime calls “nudging.” After all, according to liberal ideology, all money essentially belongs to the government.

The document was emailed by Maya Shankar, a White House senior adviser on social and behavioral sciences, to a university professor with the request that it be distributed to people interested in joining the team. The idea is that the team would “experiment” with various techniques…

The term nudge comes from a book by Obama’s former regulatory czar Cass Sunstein, the guy who believes that animals should be able to sue in court. He gives his brand of authoritarianism the Orwellian name “libertarian paternalism.”

Even some who agree that pointy-headed bureaucratic masterminds know best have qualms.

Jerry Ellig, an economist at the Mercatus Center, said that some “nudges” are reasonable, but warned about a slippery slope.

“If you can keep it to a ‘nudge’ maybe it can be beneficial,” he added, “but nudges can turn into shoves pretty quickly.”

The bigger the government, the harder the shoves, when our congealing soft tyranny inevitably transitions to a hard one.

The soft tyranny manifesto.

Control freak sociopaths, one and all.

  2. SNuss says:

Just call it what it is: A blatant attempt by the Statists to brainwash the citizenry into mindless sheeple, to be sheared and/or slaughtered as our benevolent “Shepherds” wish.

  3. Pegon Zellschmidt says:

How about a ‘nudge’ to get blacks off the generational welfare dole, or ‘nudge’ them to do their homework, to finish high school before baby, to appreciate learning, reading, math; to show up to work on time.

As usual, those ‘nudges’ are far more difficult and would result in less Democrat voters so they’ll just ‘nudge’ them to continue rabble rousing.

O/T. All you need to know about John McCain:

Senator McCain reportedly enters President Obama’s meeting with Senate Democrats; receives applause – @burgessev

  5. Xavier says:

This “nudge” is just rebranded carrot and stick. They’ve been using this tactic whenever they think an out-and-out edict would be too in-your-face.

  6. Rotohammer says:

I would like to nudge the takers into getting off the couch and getting jobs, or returning to the country where they actually have citizenship.

  7. James says:

Saw this article yesterday and wasn’t surprised at all. I’ve already seen evidence of it in the form of creepy Orwellian-type billboards popping up around town recently. They have preachy one-liner messages in big letters, like “Spoil your children, not your food” with a weblink to a .gov site (btw since when was spoiling your children a good thing?). Other billboards say something like “Eat your vegetables.”

You would have a great point except for the fact that it’s already happened. Americans have become the largest and most passive herd of sheep on the planet.

We live in the SSA: the Socialist States of America.

And to think that in the sixties, the radicals were told that they were going to ABOLISH government; now that ARE the government and are doing more terrible things than they had accused the United States of doing!

STUPID “LIBERALS”! Is this what you wanted?

  12. Hill says:

David Cameron brought Sunstein and his Nudge philosophy into the UK on the sly just after he was elected.

Proof of enough of his left leaning tendencies.

I have a nudge for them.

my fiance (bless her) actually bought me that book and I read a bit, didnt vother finishing it. Some points and examples they made were good, like new zealand’s kiwisaver program (think 401k, ira, etc) where the ‘nudge’ was to have everyone automatically enrolled, instead or taking the effort to enrole. More people were compelled to save than if you had to go out of your way to enroll. Thats clever, I will agree. But I guess I never imagined someone would use the nudges for evil…..I guess my failure to realize this shows I would make a lousey progressive, eh?
