Obama’s Park Service Removes Handles From Water Fountains

It gets harder every day, but even now the Obama Regime hits new extremes of juvenile pettiness on a regular basis. The latest malicious idiocy from Obama’s shutdown spectacle:

Republicans contend that the NPS [National Park Service], which is part of the executive branch, is under orders to make life difficult for would-be parkgoers as part of a broader political plan by the Obama administration to turn public opinion against Republicans. …

Senior Republicans have said they may open a formal investigation into the mass closures and the barring of people from places where no significant maintenance or security is required. Small children’s parks, hiking trails, and outdoor monuments remain closed despite the minimal investment needed to maintain them, if any.

In what looks like a spiteful move, the NPS even removed handles from water spigots along the Chesapeake and Ohio canal where bikers and joggers exercise as well as along the Great Allegheny Passage, just to ensure people don’t get any water from them.

Instead of saving money, the NPS is expending additional resources to go out of its way to close such locations and to make people miserable.

Next NPS agents will promote the shutdown by placing tacks on park benches to make sure no one enjoys sitting on them.

So long as his establishment media enablers can convince dupes that Republicans bear responsibility for this, the strategy is ostensibly working. Yet it is no coincidence that Obama’s job approval rating is down to 37% and sinking, despite a quarter of the country being of the mindset that would support a left-wing black president under any circumstances whatsoever. The Alinskyite tactics that worked on Chicago’s South Side may not be applicable nationally after all.

At least they didn’t poison the water.

Am I the only one noticing that this week’s “required” shutdown activities weren’t “required” last week? I mean, if it’s so important that the handles be removed from water fountains (insert your favorite action the government has taken this week to “make life as difficult for people as [they] can”) why did they wait until this week?

Obama’s “inability” to avoid shutting down public sites, monuments, and war memorials is a precedent he set himself:

“[They] were in fact kept open during the 1995/1996 government shutdowns. The administration’s decision to barricade the Lincoln Memorial marks the first time in its history the memorial has been totally off limits to visitors during a shutdown.

The administration has also balked at efforts by non-governmental groups to maintain access to public sites.

But during the Clinton-era shutdown, World War II veterans kept the Pearl Harbor memorial open.”

Obama wants the American people to associate government shutdown with a ruined vacation, a ruined wedding, a ruined dinner date:

City Tavern, an iconic restaurant in Philadelphia, has been forced to close its doors and turn away booked parties because of the government shutdown. The restaurant, which opened for the first time in 1773 and was frequented by the nation’s founding fathers, sits inside Independence National Historical Park and the building is owned by the U.S. National Parks Service.

They were allowed to remain open during the last government shutdown 17 years ago.

The restaurant was forced to cancel booked parties, including one serving 200 visitors from Japan on Wednesday night, for at least the next four days leaving patrons “angry” and “aggravated.”

“What we are witnessing all over the country is the arbitrary exercise of power. Or, to put it more succinctly – tyranny. When the minions of government feel empowered to bully, threaten, and mistreat those they are supposedly serving – even without the full knowledge of the president – we are experiencing what most concerned the founders about government; arbitrary authority unchecked by constitutional restraints.”

… Placing traffic cones along a highway to prevent cars from using scenic turnoffs in order to view Mount Rushmore? Forcibly evicting an elderly couple living in their own privately built house on Lake Mead? Locking seniors in a hotel for two days and then preventing them from making a pre-arranged stop to use a private restroom? Closing an open air memorial?

These are tyrannical acts by government if you define tyranny as arbitrary power exercised outside of the legal framework of the shutdown. It isn’t just a political game. It is a serious breach of ethics and a slap in the face to the Constitution.

Congress must investigate this and other outrages we’ve been hearing about since the shutdown began. And those responsible should be punished.

    Read more:

And it looks like they will: The House Natural Resources Committee and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee are holding a joint hearing for next week to investigate whether the Obama administration barricaded open-air Washington monuments like the World War II Memorial to make the ongoing government shutdown as painful as possible.

The hearing, scheduled for Wednesday, is entitled, “As Difficult As Possible: The National Park Service’s Implementation of the Government Shutdown.”

“Across the country, Americans are deliberately being denied access to open-air memorials and national parks – places that are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Doc Hastings, R-Wash., said in a statement. “These are sites that were not closed by the Clinton Administration during the last government shutdown. However, the Obama Administration appears determined to make their shutdown as difficult and painful as possible.”

Are you sure about that, because it makes no sense to me? In order to keep the pipes from freezing, it seems they would want to keep a little water trickling through or shut it off completely from the main valve. If the water goes to the tap, but can’t be turned on, then the pipes would have water in them and could freeze. If they turn off the main valve and drain the remaining water, then there would be no water in the pipes to freeze. Taking off the handles would not be necessary, in my opinion.
