  13. StanInTexas says:

You know something, Sinister may be right about this whole “being prepared for an emergency” thing. I am reconsidering my position… on CPR Certification.

Most people do not survive their first heart attack, so my time in learning and training CPR is wasted for them anyway. And what are the chances that I would be close enough to the person to actually be able to help them? And on the rare occasion when I am close enough and the person can be saved; I may not even do it right, and they could die anyway.

Yep, I’m convinced, no CPR classes for me. Nope, better to just stand there and take no action for a person having a heart attack and take the chance that I could make matters worse. And besides, there are professionals to help people that have heart attacks. I’m sure they’ll arrive in 10 or 15 minutes and handle the situation.

The same applies to having a gun for self-defense, right Tough-Guy?

  14. M. Wilson says:

Guns, being weapons, are of course dangerous and require responsibility to handle. But does that mean we should only allow the most dangerous elements of our society, those ruthless or stupid enough to disregard the law, to have them? Of course not.

The surest counter to a gun is another gun. A gun in the hands of a responsible, law-abiding citizen is a safe, controlled, and potent weapon that serves to deter criminal activity and increases the safety of everyone around him. In fact, a gun is many times safer than a knife or similar bladed weapon by virtue of not being “always on”. A gun’s firing mechanism may be disabled via a safety (a standard feature on all modern firearms) or its ammunition may be removed to render it incapable of firing. Thanks to modern technology, either of these safety measures can be easily and quickly reversed when the time comes to use the weapon.

And while having the element of surprise certainly was an advantage for the martial artist’s attacker, this alone is not enough to ensure a kill. Had the martial artist been armed and achieved similar mastery of firearms, he may have been able to draw and fire faster than his assailant. He might not have, but isn’t a chance better than being unarmed and helpless?

The argument of people’s own guns being turned against them, of course, ignores the fact that this could happen with absolutely any weapon. Due to the ranges involved, it stands to reason that it would actually be far easier for an assailant of superior size and strength to wrest a melee weapon from their victim and turn it against them. Again, the gun is superior in this respect by allowing you to put distance between yourself and your attacker.

As for accidents, nothing is immune to accidents. Cars kill more people via accidents in a month than guns do in a year, (reference: http://www.justfacts.com/guncontrol.asp#accidents) and car accidents kill roughly twice as many people as firearm-related accidents, homicides, and suicides combined (reference: http://webappa.cdc.gov/sasweb/ncipc/leadcaus10.html).

If you were to ban something based on it accounting for less than one percent of all accidents, you would either be looking at banning a lot of things, or have an absolutely horrible sense of scale.

And before you claim that a gun ban would have prevented 1900 suicides and 4669 homicides (per my previous source), I assure you it would not. It would have merely led to 1900 people picking a different method (hanging themselves perhaps, that seems to be second most popular) and, of course, the homicides would still have been committed by criminals who are not even supposed to have a gun under our *current* laws.

But just for kicks, what *do* you believe the self-defense weapon of choice should be for law-abiding citizens? Nerf bats? Or are you one of those people who believes the police can swoop in like a guardian angel on a moment’s notice?

Well said. Firearms allow the weak to defend themselves from the strong, the old to defend themselves from the young, and infirm to defend themselves from those who aren’t handicapped.

This is rarely the case; most criminal assailants don’t start out the day with the intent to kill a random victim.

However, the best data indicates that between 750,000 and 2,500,000 million criminal attacks are stopped each year in the US because the intended victim is armed. In 98% of these cases, a shot isn’t fired.

Gathering statistics on how many times per year a gun is used to stop a crime is difficult at best. A guy comes up and demands your wallet. You indicate that you are armed. He leaves, maybe without production of a firearm, or maybe after seeing a firearm.

Has a crime been averted? Of course. Are you going to report that to anyone? What do you report…a guy didn’t rob you? What if you were living where carrying isn’t permitted? Even less incentive to report a crime averted.

That’s why these statistics are difficult to gather and verify.

Goblins can be surprisingly sensible. Even would-be and actual terrorists choose “gun free” zones to attack the helpless.

“More Guns; Less Crime” is a book which examines the statistics behind carry laws and their effect upon crime. It’s author, an economist by training, was disgusted that there hadn’t been a rigorous statistical study on the topic (previous studies had focused on 3 (three) counties, so John Lott studied every single county in the US.

The title of his book is still true.

Obama is, if nothing else, guilty of using his “Kenyan” birth to advance himself in school, to receive assistance from Bill Ayers, etc. To be discovered that he is just another mixed race child would have eliminated some of the affirmative action benefits he no doubt received.

This is proof that the federal government recognizes no limits. Why is it the business of the federal government to police whether a soda machine is plugged in or not?

Where in the constitution is the federal government given “soda machine oversight” duty?

When a seller listed 64 pounds of mercury on Craigslist, this government agency didn’t raid the house with guns drawn and didn’t swamp the poor man with paperwork; they simply bought it and disposed of it, in a very non-confrontational and rational manner

This market-based approach to disposing of a pollutant preserved everybody’s liberty and kept taxpayer costs low.

Obviously this government agency made a huge mistake. I hope they mend the error of their ways and do everything possible avoid this kind of solution to a potential problem in the future.
