    They suggest the X-ray emissions warmed the “IGM” (inter-galactic material) enough that this prevented subsequent formation of additional similar black holes.

    I wonder if they took into account the actual temperature of the universe after the big bang and as it slowly cooled?

    The U.S. Navy was anxious to show it was not sexist, so it rushed Kara Spears Hultgreen into combat readiness in the F-14 Tomcat, the first female naval aviator to be given a combat posting. Unfortunately her readiness was questionable.

    On October 25, 1994, concluding a routine mission, Hultgreen crashed on approach to the USS Abraham Lincoln off the coast of San Diego, CA.

    Overshooting the centerline, Hultgreen yawed the aircraft in an attempt to correct. The F-14 NATOPS flight manual warned against excess yaw because the TF30-P-414A engine was known to lose power and go into compressor stall when inlet air was no longer flowing straight into it. The resulting asymmetric thrust often exceeded rudder authority, particularly at slow speeds such as when on approach. Hultgreen attempted to compensate for the power loss by pushing her right engine into full AB which exacerbated the thrust asymmetry and, due to the high angle of attack, pushed the aircraft into an unrecoverable approach turn stall. The aircraft began to roll left and the RIO, realizing the aircraft was unrecoverable, initiated ejection. The RIO made it out but as the automatic ejection sequence continued, the plane continued to roll and by the time Hultgreen’s seat fired it was somewhat inverted so she was launched into the sea and died on impact.

    The Navy, unwilling to admit their error in advancing her before she was ready for purely political and PR reasons, initially stated the fatal crash was caused by mechanical failure. However, the internal Mishap Investigation Report, later leaked to the public, stated pilot error was to blame. The crash was taped by two cameras. They show overshooting onto final, excessive yaw to correct, compressor stall, an audible wave-off and gear-up command from the landing signal officer, aircraft stall, roll, crew ejections, and impact with the water.

    In a more complex case, a combination of mechanical problems, poor decisions by aircraft controllers and a failure to assert himself by the pilot resulted in a fatal crash into a San Diego neighborhood east of here. This one, coincidentally, also involved a plane on a routine training mission off the coast featuring the USS Abe Lincoln.

    I meant to add that the pilot of the F-18 in the latter incident I posted, above (@ 10:50) had declared an emergency and could have easily landed at the Coronado naval airfield, which has an approach that is 100% over water, but instead, with known fuel issues, it was sent further north and east, over populated areas, to Miramar MCAS, it’s home base.

    On the way the issues became critical, the engines stopped and gravity took over. The pilot is said to have stayed with it to attempt to miss a nearby school and send the falling jet into a canyon instead of into the residences nearby and he almost made it – the crash site was about 250 feet from nearby Rose Canyon. At 32.860681° -117.198291° on Google Earth (at post time, that may change with the next update) you can see the houses that were destroyed in the final phases of reconstruction.

    Three people, a woman, her mother and her child, died in the crash.

    WASHINGTON (CNN) — The U.S. Navy has grounded a Navy squadron that suffered four crashes over the past 16 months, included Monday’s crash of an F-14 into a residential neighborhood that killed five people.

    The jet’s two crew members and three people inside a house were killed in the accident, which occurred shortly after the plane took off from Nashville International Airport in Tennessee.

    The Navy said it has grounded the 13 jets in the San Diego based-VF-213 squadron for at least one day to review safety procedures. A Navy spokesperson said ordering a stand-down after a major accident is a common practice for the military.

    Broad investigation under way

    The Pentagon said Tuesday the Navy is launching a broad investigation into its flying and training procedures in the wake of the crash.

    Pentagon spokesman Ken Bacon said Defense Secretary William Perry and Deputy Defense Secretary John White met with the chief and vice chief of naval operations Tuesday to discuss how the investigation is going. He said Perry was satisfied the probe is being handled “very well.”

    Bacon said there has been no decision to ground all F-14’s for a safety review, but didn’t rule out the possibility if the investigation reveals a safety problem. “I’m not ruling anything in or out here,” he said. “We are taking this very, very seriously. We are going to leave no stone unturned.”

    The investigation will look at every aspect of what may have caused the crash, Bacon said, adding that the safety record of the Navy’s F-14 has been better than average over the past 15 years.

    Vice Adm. Brent Bennitt, the Navy’s commander for Pacific Fleet aviation units, noted the F-14 has had an “unusual number of mishaps.” The Navy has 338 F-14s.

    Since 1991 there have been 30 F-14 crashes, the last four from the same squadron, VF-213, also known as the “Flying Blacklions”. One of the squadron’s accidents was the October 1994 crash that killed Lt. Kara Hultgreen, one of the first women to qualify for a Navy combat aviation assignment.

    But Bennitt said the Navy’s primary air-to-air combat plane has a lower accident rate when compared to other older Navy aircraft. The F-14, built by Grumman, was introduced in the Navy in the 1970s and is no longer being manufactured.

    Critics of the F-14 say it’s underpowered, and all of the last four accidents happened following engine stalls or problems. The Navy is replacing the older engine in F-14s with newer engines that are 30 percent more powerful, but says the move is to improve performance and is not motivated by safety reasons.

    Investigators sift through wreckage

    On Wednesday, investigators at the site were combing through the wreckage and interviewing witnesses for clues as to what caused the Navy jet to come down.

    “The plane is in parts all over the place,” one investigator said. “You can’t even make out a whole plane.”

    The jet went down 2.5 miles south of Nashville International. The Navy said the plane was not carrying any missiles, rockets, or bombs.

    Elmer Newsom, 66, his wife, Ada, 63, and a friend, Ewing T. Wair, 53, were killed when the plane hit their house in the Luna Heights subdivision. Its fuel turned the house into a huge fireball, and flames engulfed vacant homes on both sides. Also killed were Lt. Cmdr. John Stacy Bates, 33, who was flying the jet, and radar interceptor officer Lt. Graham Alden Higgins, 28.

    Second crash for pilot
    Bates’ squadron has had four F-14 accidents in the past 16 months, including one last April in which he was the pilot.

    Bates apparently lost control of his F-14. He and the radar intercept officer managed to eject from the aircraft before it went down into the Pacific Ocean. The aircraft was never recovered.

    A review of the accident investigation shows Naval investigators concluded the loss of the airplane was due to “pilot error” because Bates failed to take the required action to prevent his plane from going into an uncontrollable spin after an engine stall.

    According to the internal document, the actions of Bates and his navigator were “indicative of a need for further training … on … recovery techniques.”

    After a review, Bates was found fully qualified for return to flight status, said Cmdr. Gregg Hartung, a Navy spokesman.

    How you suggest my example was “piss poor” remains to be explained.

    The points of my bit, which you missed, were that the navy rushed a woman, who seems to have been unqualified, into a combat position. Further, when her lack of qualification killed her, nearly killed her RIO and put an expensive plane at the bottom of the ocean, they attempted to cover up her mistakes which were the direct and primary causes of the accident, calling it a “mechanical issue” when in fact she flew the craft into a known problem profile and exactly what her training should have told her would happen as a result did happen.

    Political correctness put her in that situation and political correctness attempted to cover up her contribution to the mishap.

    I want to stress that I’m not saying women should not be in combat positions. I’m not saying women should not fly jets. I’m simply saying that THIS woman clearly was not well trained enough to be landing F-14s on carriers and, further, I was pointing out how the Navy tried to distract from the fact it was her errors, not some mechanical malfunction (but yes, a known problem with the design of the jet which she should have known about & avoided did contribute, but only because she flew the jet in a way her training should have warned her not to), that were the ultimate causes of the crash.

    This reminds me of the B-52 crash in Washington. The one where a guy formerly in my chain of command was known to fly B-52s in improper and unsafe ways, was actually called in and reprimanded for doing so, yet he was left as an aircraft commander and ultimately destroyed a jet and killed several people as a result.

    It was another case of the tech data and training clearly warning “If you fly the jet this way you will crash” and yet, like Hultgreen, he went ahead and flew the jet that way anyway.

    To sum up – you seem more fixated on the fact the F-14 had issues and I don’t contest your point. However, my example was perfect for showing what I wanted to show – how the Navy put a person who wasn’t ready into the driver’s seat because of political correctness, then went on to try to conceal her failures and their inevitable result, again because of political correctness.

Bee said that a body placed in a trunk under direct sunlight will accelerate decomposition “like an oven” and could make a body that had been dead for two days look like it had been decomposing for two weeks. Bee reiterated Monday that the incident is being investigated as a homicide.

    A homeless man was attacked and threatened outside a pharmacy in the 8800-block of Villa La Jolla Drive (in San Diego) just before 6 a.m. Monday according to officials.

    That’s relatively nearby…

    I suspect the suspect was involved in Occupy SD, but I cannot prove it at this time.

    Lt. Hultgreen was not the best aviator in her group……nor was she the worst. The mishap that killed her was her fault, to be sure – it’s ALWAYS the PICs fault.

    Within the context of the times, she was just one of several of her contemporaries that got into the exact same situation, and did not succesfully handle it. All of them knew of the issue, all of them had read the Flight Manual and Checklists and practiced engine-out procedures…..and a lot of them still got into an unrecoverable, often fatal situation.

    Were they ALL the victim of “Political Correctness”? The evidence seems to indicate it was more of a training issue – and the Navy agreed. This is NOT a criticism of Naval flight training – it’s some of the best in the world. In spite of that, mishaps still happen…..and continue to happen.

    An awful lot of instructors had to sign off on her. What’s the training record show?

    The irony here is that you bring up Lieutenant Colonel Robert Hammond and his spectacular B-52 accident.

    Bob Hammond proved that two of the most dangerous words in aviation are, “Watch This!!!” This guy threw the rule book, FARs, AF regs, and Flight Manual aside nearly every time he flew……because he was a self-described ‘hot stick’, and nobody was gonna tell HIM what do do.

    The B-52 Flight Manual specifically prohibits exceeding 30 degrees of bank and 15 degrees of pitch at traffic pattern altitude…..yet this moron made it known that he was gonna fly 65 degree banked turns at an airshow, and that he intended to ROLL the aircraft… low altitude, in close proximity to the public, and with half a dozen other people on board.

    Since Hammond was, “in your chain of command’, I’m sure you are well aware of all the previous incidents this “Ace of the Base” was involved in (some involving structural damage and near-mishaps), and the fact that a lot of people would not fly with him. The Wing Chief of Safety and the head of Aeromedical at Fairchild AFB wanted him GROUNDED…..and thought it was absolute insanity that they were going to let him continue to fly, let alone fly in a public air show.

    Nobody stopped him. He killed six other people and destroyed a valuable national asset in the form of a B-52, and left a black mark the Air Force had to work hard to overcome.

    What was even worse, Hammond’s reckless ways leading up to the accident created a discipline problem – it seems there were a lot of misguided young aviators that were trying to emulate this “colorful character” and bad example.

    So……with all that said, why was he still allowed to fly?

    It was something akin to, but far worse, than “Political Correctness” – seems that Bob Hammond was, “One Of the Boys – Standards and Evaluation be D#MNED!!!”

    Fortunately, such breakdowns in leadership are the exception in our military, not the rule.

    My late father was a military aviation instructor. This reminds me of what he said about the awful Hollywood fantasy “Top Gun”. In his usual calm and understated way, he said, “Yes, I saw young guys like that when I was teaching. It was my job to weed ’em out.”

    Yeah, Bob – “political correctness” can kill you – and so can misguided machismo and stupidity – no matter how many hours are in your logbook.

    Now, unless you can prove the Navy put Lt. Hultgreen out there with lesser training and qualification than her peers, I still maintain that she’s a, “p#ss-poor” example of affirmative action / political correctness.

He got 96% of the Black vote the last time, he’ll get 96% of the vote this time too, despite the myriad of failed decisions. I’m trying to be objective, but my observation over the years is that race trumps everything with those 96%. I’m not a racist, everybody gets a fair shake in my world. I’ve always rooted the underdog, as long as they have a moral & ethical compass, work hard, & love their family & country. Unfortunately, these traits are becoming more rare every day.
