Peter Rabbit, Food Allergy Bully

Any kind of defect will allow you to achieve a high position in the victim hierarchy, so that you can bark denunciations at those below and receive cringing apologies in return. You just have to crybully loudly. Even having an allergy is sufficient. That’s why Beatrix Potter’s classic children’s character Peter Rabbit, star of a new animated movie, has been denounced as a “food allergy bully”:

Peter and his bunny friends gang up on their nemesis, Mr. McGregor, by pelting him with blackberries, even though he is allergic to them. When one berry lands in his mouth, he begins to choke before injecting himself with an EpiPen.

The scene prompted backlash from allergy advocacy groups and parents of children with food allergies, who said it mocked an attack that in real life could have proved fatal. The segment led to a hashtag — #boycottpeterrabbit — and an online petition demanding an apology.

Sony Pictures responded with the predictable crawling obsequiousness.

Ben Shapiro gasps at the sheer lunacy:

If we have to worry about every depiction of dangerous activity by heroic characters in cartoons, we’re going to have to scrub every episode of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck. It’ll be amazing when groups of victims of explosions say that cartoons should avoid using dynamite in depictions of Yosemite Sam, or when victims of anvil accidents claim that Warner Brothers must do away with Acme Anvil Company, the focus of evil in the modern world.

They still run Bugs Bunny cartoons on TV? Not for long. Unless you go back to the early days of Babbitt and Beans, the only black characters are Daffy Duck, who is always getting his beak blown around sideways by Elmer Fudd’s shotgun, and Marvin the Martian, who is a maniac. This constitutes racism — an even more serious crime than food allergy insensitivity.

    FFS. Get over yourselves.

If I ran a theater I would hand out complimentary bags of peanuts.

Except, about 200 American children die each year from food allergies. No one dies from anvil dropping. See the difference? One is fake 100% of the time, and one is a very real risk for some. It’s a small percentage of the population, true, but it does exist.

Imagine if it were your child who had the deadly food allergy. Would you think it’s something worth joking about?

Once again, this entire episode boils down to one common thread amongst hard core right wingnuts: lack of empathy.

    Need a tissue?

Is that the hammer Soros used on your head?

  7. Uncle_Pinko says:

“Grumpy Cat” and a Soros reference – wow I’ve found the least original right wing poster.

  8. MAS says:

Perhaps a hug then? Might make us evil conservatives seem a bit nicer.
BTW how many babies have allergic reactions to Planned Parenthood?

  9. Uncle_Pinko says:

I don’t have any kids with food allergies, so, no, I don’t need a hug either. However, I do know a few parents who do. And the stress they feel over the possible harm their kids could suffer is real. Sometimes it’s nice to not have “be a d*ck” as your default stance. You should try it.

Also, don’t you know that the ‘what about’ technique of debate is usually the first sign that you have no argument to stand on at all?

  10. Otis Donkey says:

so the world has to revolve around those who might get their feelings hurt.

    Got it.

BTW, peanut allergies used to be almost nonexistent until Dr’s told parents NOT to feed peanut butter to kids. It’s a first world created problem.

Now they say to expose your babies to PB to avoid allergies to complex proteins like peanut butter. Imagine that.

  11. Uncle_Pinko says:

I don’t disagree with you, we seem to have over doctored ourselves on this issue, but that doesn’t mean the effects aren’t real.

And no, the world doesn’t always have to revolve around people who might get their feelings hurt, but that doesn’t mean people shouldn’t think about how their words and actions are taken.

This is a children’s movie that featured a plot point about how you can bully someone who is allergic to food by specifically forcing that food on them — not really the greatest message.

I have a feeling that most of generation snowflake have never watched Looney Tunes. I will ensure my children watch them.

  13. Eddie_Valiant says:

Make sure they get a healthy dose of the Three Stooges too. I watched them every Saturday with the kids to insure their cultural education was complete! 😉

  14. MAS says:

Thanks, I think almost as highly of you. You sure you don’t need that tissue?

    Don’t forget Rocky and Bullwinkle…

Sorry to say, it would have been wiser not to depict that in a year that’s already seen cases of kids trying to kill other kids using food allergies. Sadly, and more importantly, they won’t make anything as good as Bugs again. A wise guy for a role model? Naa! They deliberately switched him out for He-Man and Skeletor (subliminally identical) decades ago.

It’s a fairy tale protest version of the Geneva convenion. Mr McGregor is killing the rabbits and eating them in meat pies but the rabbits are required to fight back in a civilized manner more acceptable to folk like Uncle_Pinko below. Chemical warfare is not Kosher because…allergic reactions. Might set a bad example for kids you see. Slaughtering others and putting them in meat pies isn’t as evil as using the villains weaknesses against him. Not to mention how hurtful it is to classify someone as a villain, even if he is using car bombs against elementary schools. So sensitive and yet they find chopping millions of babies up in the name of choice completely acceptable…
