Rich Lowry: Confederate Soldiers Fought for Odious Cause

National Review thought cop Rich Lowry, who infamously fired John Derbyshire for making indisputably accurate observations in a separate publication that were deemed not to be in compliance with politically correct ideology, has offered his overpriced 2¢ worth on the liberal jihad against the Confederate flag:

I don’t like the Confederate battle flag and … would take it down from prominent official places as a sheer matter of courtesy, if nothing else.

But, let’s remember: The Confederate army fought for an odious cause, yet it wasn’t an army of extermination like the Nazis, to which it is now being compared.

An odious cause. States’ rights and the defense of their homeland from a devastating military invasion was an odious cause. Trying to fight off the federal behemoth than is strangling us all to this day was an odious cause.

Saying that Southern soldiers weren’t quite as bad as the guards at Nazi death camps is as close as a liberal weenie like Lowry will come to defending the rebel flag.

How’s this for odious: infiltrating the top ranks of the “conservative” information establishment and subverting it from within by buying into leftist premises and injecting venomous moonbattery.

    Most people do not know that the civil war wasn’t about slavery and Lincoln didn’t care about the slaves. It was about centralized federal power. It was about money in taxes and tariffs. Lincoln ONLY freed the slaves to piss off the southerners and make them pay for the help they got.

  5. Seriously? says:

    It was totally about state rights. They wanted the states to be able to keep owning slaves when the federal governement wanted to outlaw it. It was also about the economy, because southern states were so tied to slavery that slavery being abolished would completely ruin them. That’s how you got from the Southern gentlemen stereotype to the southern hick stereotype; all their wealth and power was dependent on slavery. And yes, it’s also about heritage-in the same way the descendents of Nazis may wish to flaw swastikas to celebrate their heritage, but personally I don’t think that just because your ancestors did it it’s worth having pride in. Also, it was a waste. It was a complete and total waste of time and life, because they lost, like Vietnam. Nothing was achieved. It wasn’t even a well run government while it was in power and if there was no war it would have crumbled in years anyway.

    “No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed.”-Confederate constitution. Farthest thing from odious, right? Sure sounds like a country yall’d love….

    Also they were all Democrats. The Confederacy was run by Democrats. Maybe this will get yall to realize the whole “the parties never changed, the modern Republican party is responsible for ending slavery!” stuff is bullshit.

  6. DinaRehn says:

    The irony is that with the Government expanding at such a rate, there will be some people who will b under virtual slavery with 90% tax rates and such.

    Robert E. Lee on the war:

    “With all my devotion to the Union and the feeling of loyalty and duty of an American citizen, I have not been able to make up my mind to raise my hand against my relatives, my children, my home….”

    Note, the causes for which Robert E Lee fought were his relative, his children, and his home.

  10. DH says:

    I don’t know Lowry or his motivation, but it seems to me that he was referring to slavery. He didn’t say that the Confederate army didn’t *also* fight for worthy causes, such as states rights – just that it fought on behalf of states that favored slavery, which is true.

  12. The southern states seceded legally. The north invaded the south because Lincoln wanted to ‘preserve’ the union. As a result, over 600K died. Am I missing something here?

    The Bonnie Blue Flag – with lyrics – popular Civil War song from the movie: Gods and Generals – HQ
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVeSKwM–1M

    Bobby Horton – The Bonnie Blue Flag Lyrics
    We are a band of brothers, and native to the soil,
    Fighting for our Liberty, with treasure, blood and
    toil;
    And when our rights were threaten’d, the cry rose near
    and far,
    Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag, that bears a Single
    Star! Hurrah! Hurrah! For Southern Rights, hurrah!
    Hurrah! For the Bonnie Blue Flag, that bears a Single
    Star!

    As long as the Union was faithful to her trust, like
    friends and like brethren kind were we and just;
    But now when Northern treachery attempts our rights to
    mar,
    We hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a
    Single Star.
    First, gallant South Carolina nobly made the stand;
    Then came Alabama, who took her by the hand;
    Next, quickly Mississippi, Georgia and Florida, All
    rais’d on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a Single
    Star.
    Ye men of valor, gather round the Banner of the Right,
    Texas and fair Louisiana, join us in the fight;
    Davis, our loved President, and Stephens, Statesman
    rare, Now rally round the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a Single Star.

    Hurrah! Hurrah! for Southern Rights, hurrah! Hurrah!
    For the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a Single Star.
    And heroes to brave Virginia! The Old Dominion State,
    With the young Confederacy at length has link’d her
    fate;
    Impell’d by her example, now other States prepare, To
    hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a Single
    Star.
    Then cheer, boys, raise the joyous shot, For Arkansas
    and North Carolina now have both gone out;
    And let another rousing cheer for Tennessee be given,
    The Single Star of the Bonnie Blue Flag has grown to be
    Eleven.
    Then here’s to our Confederacy, strong we are and
    brave, like patriots of old, we’ll fight our heritage
    to save;
    And rather than submit to shame, to die we would
    prefer, So cheer for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a
    Single Star.

    Slavery (Also legal in the north at the time) would have ended by the 20th century because the Confederacy wouldn’t have had a bunch of OBNOXIOUS Yankees telling us how to live our lives and threatening us with violence if we didn’t obey them.

    And your point is what?

    Jewish soldiers were murdered by your Nazi students during WWII but I don’t see WWII games, paraphernalia, emblems, etc. being banned. Same with your idol Soviet Russia, Jews were murdered by the thousands there yet you assholes still were the sickle and hammer or the hundreds murdered by Che Guevara and yet you filth wear his image on T-shirts because you have no idea who or what he was.

    You should remain silent until you have some clue what you are talking about.

    General Forrest was NEVER tried for that accusation even though he DEMANDED trial. The prosecutor had to publicly admit that there was NO EVID against him. NO CONFEDERATE LEADER was ever tried for war crimes in spite of public demands. THERE WAS NO EVIDENCE against them.
    Many FREE blacks were enslaved by yankee solders because they didn’t believe there were any free blacks in the South. Many blacks died fighting for the Confederacy which was their home.
    We also had many indian tribes on our side.

    You must remember that libtard assholes are not interested in facts, reality or truth. Therefore debating them is a waste of time. They are targets awaiting engagement, nothing more.

    Call them out, make them fight, they run away every time.

    Statism is a liberty killing evil wherever it is practised by those that know better than you how you should live.

    The odious cause was slavery. It was definitely not state’s rights or a fight against a tyrannical federal government. The south seceded because Lincoln won the election and they did so before Lincoln had a chance to do anything that violated their “rights.” Heck, he waited through several year of war before he banned slavery. The south seceded because they were poor sports, did not want to follow the Constitution, and were militantly pro-slavery. The Confederate battle flag is much more similar to a pirate flag. People like them because they look cool and the people who carried them were tough fighters, but the causes behind them were both evil and while they should not be banned, neither should be flown over a State capital as if it were a State flag.

    It wasn’t being flown over a state capitol jackass. It was being flown at a war memorial site dedicated to the SC solders who died in Civil War 1.0 fighting under that flag.

    Now, go back to HuffPo and get some more misinformation to cloud your limited mind.

    I’d love to be able to shove that fact up every libtards ass, if it is true. Do you have documentation that the Kansas Dunhams owned slaves? Kansas was a Union state so I don’t think it happened. If you can prove it though, I’ll rail every tard I meet with it.

    It’s going to be quite amusing, were it not so tragic, when Leftist trolls such as Gene here start defending killing “tax resisters” and taking their property because to do otherwise would result in the entire Progressive house of cards to collapse without the labor of the productive to support it.

    After all, it would be wrong to deprive the vast unworking masses of the bounty that they have contracted their VileProg pushers to provide.

    What, pray tell, will the VileProgs do when the people who actually do the work say “fuck off, we are free men and women and will not work for your benefit any longer”? Will they go quietly into the night? Or will they look at the economic devastation that will be wrought upon them and their Minions by such a paradigm shift? I assure you, Gene and his fellow maggot ridden hyenas will be howling to defend their “rights” to the labor of others.

    When the productive tell the progressive overlords to fuck off, they get sent to prison camps, just like in any socialist totalitarian dictatorship. That is why every socialist / communist country on Earth has devolved into a police state that people have to escape from. The rulers know that the productive cannot be allowed to flee so they remain captive. If they become non-productive they are imprisoned or killed. That is true in every nation that has implemented what Comrade Obama is implementing in America.

    CTsOpinion, you need to check YOUR facts. Slavery most definitely WAS legal in the United States at the time of the Civil War. Slavery was legal in the District of Columbia until April 1862, months after the Civil War began. It remained legal in Maryland until November 1, 1864, 20 months AFTER the Emancipation Proclamation. It remained legal in Delaware (like Maryland, a state that did not secede) until December 18th, 1865, 9 months AFTER the Civil War ended.
