I wonder if anybody has worked out the irony that although the words to “The Star Spangled Banner” are American, the music is from an old British drinking song!

It was not a “drinking song” but a tune written by John Smith in 1775 for the London music club called the Anacrenotic Society. It became their “constitutional song” and referenced Bacchus, the Greek god of wine, but the idea that the tune accompanied drunken merry making is a fallacy.

Since the tune itself was so outstanding, it became widely known in the English speaking world and was set many times to different words. Another bit of trivia, the SSB is the only national anthem in a triple meter. All other national anthems are in duple meter, they are military marches in other words. Soldiers have two feet not three. So the American anthem is more dance like and less militaristic. That should make a lefty’s little brain explode.
