South African Army Lets Horses Starve

One group that definitely misses apartheid in South Africa is horses:

The National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA) is engaging with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to find solutions for horses that are poorly treated at the South African Army Specialist Infantry Capability (SAASIC) unit.

On Monday the NSPCA expressed anger at the poor state of care for horses at the unit in Potchefstroom. The organisation had to put down 25 severely emaciated horses.

The starving horses resorted to eating dirt and their own droppings in a desperate attempt to keep themselves alive. Apparently, it didn’t occur to anyone in charge to feed them.

Within memory, South Africa had a respected First World military. It even had nuclear weapons. Now, it can’t keep horses fed. Progress works fast in a rainbow utopia.

On a tip from ABC of the ANC.
