“Stressed” Turtles Airlifted to Florida for Vacation

Good thing Obama’s media has diverted everyone’s attention from the government spending crisis to the issue of whether “the rich” should be looted even more aggressively. Otherwise the feds might have to cut back on crucial programs like this one:

More than two dozen sea turtles described by the Associated Press as “stressed” by cold ocean waters have been airlifted from New England to balmy Florida.

The Coast Guard flew the turtles to Orlando on Friday, but the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (the federal agency that apparently oversees sea-turtle protection) reportedly arranged the flight. The Daytona Beach News Journal reports that 20 turtles were taken to SeaWorld Orlando, five loggerhead turtles were taken to the Volusia County Marine Science Center, and three other facilities in Florida also took in the displaced creatures. …

[S]ome are being treated at a separate $4.5 million “state of the art” facility.

Good thing for sea turtles they are exempt from ObamaCare.

Here’s how a government spokesweenie justifies the outrageous waste of taxpayer money:

“Taxpayers decided with the Endangered Species Act that they wanted the federal government to protect endangered species.”

Funny, I don’t recall reaching that decision.

The extravagance will include a return trip to New England when the weather warms up — provided government spending hasn’t collapsed the economy by then.

Living large in Obama’s America.

On a tip from AC.

More proof that generally speaking, the American people lack the intellectual capacity to be entrusted with anything as powerful as the vote. This assumes the result of the last election wasn’t proof enough.

    We agreed to:

    Not over-harvesting shellfish beds.
Not Hunting certain species without special permission.
Leaving most or all of the sea turtle eggs buried on the beach.
Hunting only durring specified times of the year.
Limiting the number of fish we catch.

We DID NOT agree to “vacations” for wildlife. There are times when you HAVE TO let nature take its course.

  5. Python says:

How did they know they were stressed? Were they off their food, sullen and rude to their workmates, constantly pacing the room and wiping their brows, visiting psychiatrists, seeking counselling, chain-smoking, drinking too much?

  6. AC says:

Chances are, that as a protected class, they also didn’t have their genitals aggressively fondled before boarding the plane.

And the lucky recipient of this tax payer funded program, a Canadian company since they already had De Havilland twin otters set up for it.

As a retired CG aviator I can tell you it cost around 10K an hour to fly a c-130. On the other hand this flight would have just been added as a trainer so it would not have cost any more money since the aircraft would have flown any ways. We did this all the time moveing seals, dolphins etc

Turtles are pretty tasty, right? Don’t they have several different meats? Maybe a couple of the facilities were, um, restaurants?

Florida did something like that too.

The Cracker cowboys use to carry a live gopher turtle around in their saddle bags. Come dinner time, they would roast it over a fire in the shell; they called it a “box lunch”.

  12. Ghost of FA Hayek says:

This was simply a reason to throw money to the wind.
The act of moving these turtles alone will most assuredly cause them “stress”.

  13. James McEnanly says:

These turtles have been doing their thing since the Mesozoic. Why do they need to have modern air transport? Do they fly first class or coach?
