Teachers Unions Want Legal Teacher-Student Sex

No one expects teachers unions to advance the best interests of kids. Albert Shanker was president of the United Federation of Teachers and the American Federation of Teachers. As Shanker put it, “When school children start paying union dues, that’s when I’ll start representing the interests of school children.” Even so, it is appalling to learn that two major teachers unions want to keep it legal for teachers to have sex with their students in Rhode Island. From Good School Hunting:

[Tuesday] at a hearing for a bill (HB 5817) that would make sex between school employees and students a crime—even after they’ve turned 16, the legal age of consent in Rhode Island—both teachers’ unions made their objections known.

Both unions in this case means National Education Association Rhode Island and United Federation of Teachers.

Rhode Island is one of a few states where it is perfectly legal for teachers and other school employees to have sexual relations with their students once they turn 16. […Rhode Island is] also a state [which], after a year long investigation by USA Today, received a grade of D for how well we track and share information about teachers who are also alleged abusers.

Sex with students for those with such proclivities can be counted among the benefits unions offer teachers in exchange for the mountains of money collected in dues — much of which is passed along to the comparably pernicious Democratic Party.
