The Bigger the Government…

“Political science” only seems like an oxymoron. Actual natural laws dictate some aspects of politics, as immutable as the laws of physics. For example:

The bigger the government, the smaller the citizen, in terms of goodness, character, and liberty.

Dennis Prager expounds:

On a tip from Jester.

Dennis is describing the principle of Subsidiarity, which demands that things be handled at the lowest possible levels of society first, moving up to higher levels as the situation requires. So most things should be handled by individuals and families before moving up to the neighborhood, the community, the city, the county, and then to the level of the state. The federal government is always the last resort for the vast majority of problems facing society. When the federal government takes over the two most fundamental elements of human life, education and health care, there is a serious disorder happening in society. The natural, proper ordering of things becomes inverted, and good can never come from it. This inability to recognize the truth of things, even to reject truth altogether, is the definition of Liberalism. The idea that liberty is sustainable apart from truth will always end in the growth of government and the erosion of liberty. What Dennis seems to miss is the fact that America was founded on that very falsehood. For all the talk of liberty, even elevating Liberty to the status of America’s God, it cannot be sustained without explicitly recognizing the Truth that makes and keeps us free.
