The Purpose of California’s Gender Quotas

If the Third Reich imposed a law that a certain percentage of board members of ostensibly private companies had to be of pure Aryan lineage, most would recognize this as tyrannical government intrusion into private affairs. Yet many are still willing to tolerate the lunacy unfolding in California, where a bill easily passed in the legislature imposing gender quotas on the boards of companies foolish enough to have “principal executive offices” in the Land of Fruits and Nuts.

The law requires a company to appoint one woman to its board of directors by the end of 2019. By the end of 2021 a five-member board would need to have two women, while boards with six or more directors would need three.

Fortunately, there is an out for companies that are unable to recruit the government-mandated number of females:

The Legislature, always alert to possible micro-aggressions, defines female as “an individual who self-identifies her gender as a woman, without regard to the individual’s designated sex at birth.”

That is, men will have the option of pretending that they “self-identify” as women in order to serve on boards. No doubt it will be mandatory to refer to these men with feminine pronouns.

The ostensible purpose is to benefit an identity group that liberals like (women) at the expense of one they do not like (men). But this motive is fake. Corporations are already bending over backward to recruit as many women as possible for the sake of burnishing their politically correct images.

When Big Government applies ham-fisted coercion to fix a nonexistent problem, the actual purpose is the coercion itself. Tyranny is its own end, as progressives never tire of proving.

Tyranny leads to more tyranny, as coercion is used to solve the problems caused by coercion. In this case, if a black man loses his position to a less-qualified white woman due to the quotas, racism has occurred, which is the worst thing imaginable. No worries; quotas on how many blacks must be on each board will solve the problem.

“What about us?” gays will screech. Then comes the predictable requirement to have at least one homosexual on each board.

“What about us?” the disabled will screech. “What about us?” illegal aliens will screech. “What about us?” Muslims will screech. “What about us?” the left-handed will screech. “What about us?” albinos will screech.

The regular white guys who built everything will be purged, as intended. Also purged will be competence, because quotas impose the deprioritization of merit.

Moonbattery-addled Norway has been down this road:

Since 2008 Norwegian firms have faced dissolution if their boards aren’t at least 40% female. …

A 2012 study from USC professor Kenneth Ahern and University of Michigan professor Amy Dittmar found Norway’s “quota led to younger and less experienced boards, increases in leverage and acquisitions, and deterioration in operating performance, consistent with less capable boards.”

“So what?” California bureaucrats will sneer. “The private sector is our enemy anyway.”

True enough. But for now, private companies still have the power to relocate out of California — which even those most prone to leftist “virtue” signaling will do if the moonbattery becomes sufficiently oppressive.

When demographic transformation allows Democrats to do to the whole country what they have been doing to California, these companies will relocate to places like Singapore. Wringing taxes out of them and subjecting them to social engineering schemes will be difficult for Democrats to accomplish.
