Donald Trump on the Mindless Devotion of His Supporters

It’s hard to say whether The Donald really could murder someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue and not lose any devotees from his cult of personality. But just telling them that he could and receiving cheers and laughter instead of boos is a testimony to the heedless momentum of a mob:

“I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters,” he said [at a rally in Sioux City, Iowa on Saturday].

If he could denounce Antonin Scalia for opposing Affirmative Action, call for murdering the relatives of suspected terrorists, support tax hikes, and in general conduct himself like a thug, a boor, and a buffoon yet still keep rising in the polls, maybe he could shoot somebody. Give him enough power and we might find out.

But the question for now is, can he imply that his own followers are slavish, mindlessly loyal fools with no principles and not lose their support?

On tips from Varla and Torcer. Hat tip: Weasel Zippers.

Trump is a populist who has tapped into the vast discontent of middle America. He is a mirror image of Obama in ’08, telling the right exactly what they want to hear and casting himself as the Conservative savior.

Hope and change will make America great again.

Based upon what I read on blog posts, he is correct. I agree with Xavier, there are distinct similarities between Trump supporters and the Obama supporters of 08. Emotion voting vs intellect voting.

    Guys…. it was a joke.

So now you’re using Trump’s jokes to smear him; like liberals?

From his successes with the American public and now pulling ahead of Cruz in Iowa, this kind of nonsense strongly suggests that the anti-Trumps have adopted a steadfast commitment to losing.

And where does that end? In fractionation.

You might ask: were Trump to take the nomination and run for the WH against the dumpster Hillary or the congenital imbecile Sanders or whatever loser runs as an independent, are the anti-Tumps also committed to staying home on election day?

Because as in 2012, you may put yet another idiot in the WH.

    Trump: Establishment is ‘against me’
(CNN)Donald Trump insisted Monday that the Republican establishment is against him, but conceded that party leaders are warming to his candidacy as a better alternative to rival Sen. Ted Cruz’s presidential bid.

In the first portion of a wide-ranging interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer just a week before Iowans head to the caucuses, Trump touted his strong lead in the polls, once again raised the “problems” Cruz faces due to his Canadian birthplace and undisclosed campaign loans and explained why he joked about shooting somebody in the middle of New York’s 5th Avenue.

Trump also explained why establishment leaders are more prepared to back his presidential bid over that of Cruz, the Texas senator who has cast himself as a principled lawmaker but whom critics call inflexible.
    [..]
“I think the establishment actually is against me, but really coming on line because they see me as opposed to Cruz who is a nasty guy who can’t get along with anybody,” Trump said. “At a certain point you’ve got to make deals.”

While Trump’s candidacy has from the start faced a barrage of criticism from the political and consultant classes in Washington, several establishment Republicans have said lately that they would sooner back Trump than Cruz.

That has in turn become a new attack line by Cruz as he battles Trump for a first-place finish in the Iowa caucuses, which polling a week out shows could go either way. Cruz has taken to slamming Trump as the establishment’s new hope, suggesting that those in the Washington power club are abandoning Florida Sen. Marco Rubio in favor of the mogul.
