Washington State Can’t Afford Promised College Freebies

Looks like the commies running Washington State got over their skis —or their Trotskys, as the case may be. The lavishly generous Washington College Promise guaranteed free or affordable tuition, starting with the 2020–2021 school year, to be financed by a surcharge on businesses. However, already,

after 31,000 students have submitted financial-aid forms, lawmakers and government officials are questioning whether the tax raises enough money to keep their promise.

Like Margaret Thatcher said about socialists running out of other people’s money. Looks like they are going to be several $million short.

State Sen. Jamie Pedersen, D-Seattle, said last year’s law “didn’t have a lot of time for development, either on the policy side or the funding side.”

Promise free everything to everybody, then worry about how to pay for it later. The strategy has been working fine for the Bernie Sanders campaign.

The new handout promises…

…to pay full tuition and fees for students from families who make less than $50,000 a year – and partial tuition for families who make up to the state’s median income, which is about $92,000 for a family of four.

Like Inspector Clouseau with his foot caught on a phone cord, legislators have tangled themselves up in their own arcane gobbledygook:

The law included a description of the types of businesses subject to the surcharge, but according to the agency tasked with collecting the tax, the language is so complex that it anticipates trouble with getting companies to pay.

Like many government handouts, the Washington College Promise is a gateway into a black hole of ever-increasing debt:

An estimate from the state Office of Financial Management projects this shortfall will swell to nearly $50 million a year by fiscal year 2023, as more high school graduates start college.

If only Inslee’s presidential campaign had amounted to something. As president, maybe he could just print the money.

On a tip from Dragon’s Lair. Hat tip: Legal Insurrection.
